Mr Klein told his class that a new student, Inez, would join them soon. He said that Inez was deaf. She “talked” with others by using sign language. Mr Klein knew sign language and he decided to teach it to his students so that they could also “talk” with Inez.
First, they learned to sign letters. Some letters were hard to remember. Other letters, like C, were easier because the shape of the hand was the same as the shape of the letter.
The next thing they learned was finger spelling. They signed one letter after another to spell a word. They started with two-letter words such as at and on, and then spelled longer words.
Finally, Mr Klein showed them that just one sign could be used for a whole word. To make the sign for the word “fine”, a person spreads out the five fingers on one hand, touches the thumb to the chest and moves the hand away from the chest. Signing is not just done with the hands. Expressions on the face are also important. The students also learned to sign a question mark by using expressions on the face.
When Inez first entered the classroom, she looked nervous. But the students signed, “ Good morning, Inez.” She gave the class a big smile and signed back, “ What a wonderful welcome!”
34. Why did Mr Klein teach his students sign language?

When you have dinner, you follow table manners. When you have a lesson, you obey the rules in the classroom. But have you ever thought about needing to mind your manners in the digital world when you use phones, e-mails and social medias, like QQ, We Chat, Twitter, etc?
As new research by Oxford University noted. “It’s just important to treat people with respect online as it is in real life.” The study came up with some rules of good manners to live by in the digital age.
Their first advice is not “over-sharing” on social media, which means not posting every detail about your life online, because some of us are not creative enough to always show off our thoughts and lives on social media.
The manners also include not looking through others’ phones and not gossiping about others over message, especially when you choose “reply all” to send a message to a group of people. Although gossip is not a harmful chat that can make conversations exciting, it can also be a way to spread something untrue about other people. Gossip can be even stronger on social media than in real life, so it’s better not to gossip.
Moreover, when you have bad news for someone, do not leave text messages on social media, chat with him or her by calling or sending personal messages.
Nowadays technology has offered us different ways to contact others. It is important to
remember how to behave towards others online.
38. According to the passage, we shouldn’t over-share details of our life on social media because_____.
A. it may allow bad people to steal our personal information easily

D. not each of us can express our thoughts and lives creatively

C. 爱说长道短的人 D. 流言蜚语
40. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

Skyscrapers and traffic jams are often seen in today’s big cities. But what will the cities of the future look like?
They will look “smarter”, for one thing. A smart city is a city that uses digital technology, such as 5G networks and the “ internet of things”, save money and resources, and make our lives more convenient.
For example, by using sensors and 5G networks to check the usage of water, gas and electricity, we can find out how to use these resources more efficiently. Imagine if water and gas pipes could remind repair workers when there is a problem.
Some cities around the world are already using smart technology to improve people’s lives. In Baltimore, US, smart trash bins can sense how full they are and tell workers when they need cleaning. In Amsterdam, there is real-time traffic data collected from sensors around the city. There are fewer traffic jams.
In the city of Hang Zhou, Alibaba , one of China’s biggest tech companies started a project called “ city Brain” in 2016. It uses a network of cameras and sensors spread across the city to collect data on road conditions. The system can track ambulance and see if they are on their way to local hospitals. If they are, red traffic lights in their path can be changed to green so that they can reach the hospital faster.
Of course, it will take time to build the smart cities of the future. But it won’t be long until more cities join in. It is expected that more than 60 percent of the world’s population will live in smart cities by 2050, according to Tech Republic.
42. If you live in a smart city, ________________
A. you will be always in traffic jams.
B. you will not need to work any more.
C. your life will be much easier than before.
D. you will spend more money and use more resources.
43. The examples given of smart cities are taken to show______________
A. what an important role smart technology is playing in our life.
B. how many smart cities are there around the world.
C. how fast smart technology is developing all over the world.
D. smart technology has been used for people’s lives around the world.
44. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Living in smart cities has some disadvantages.
B. More people will live in smart cities.
C. Not everyone wants to live in a smart city.
D. All cities will become smart cities by 2050.
45. What’s the best title of the passage?[来源:Z+xx+k.Com]

Cats are great hunters. Mice are often on their top five kill list. But sometimes, a cat will not kill the animal it catches. ① __________, the catch becomes kind of a toy or plaything.
The first expression is “play cat and mice with someone”.The cat seizes a mouse. Then lets it go. Catches it. Lets it go. Over and over again! It is good fun for the cat but frightening for the poor mouse. So, if you play cat and mouse with someone, you play a power game with them. You, the person with the power, are the cat. Maybe you pretend to give the other person something they want but then take it away. You toy with them.
Now, let's leave the game of cat and mouse and talk about playing in a different way. Let's imagine a classroom filled with young children. The teacher must leave the room for a couple of minutes. At first, everybody is well-behaved. ②But the longer the teacher is gone, the naughtier the class will be. It starts out slowly. Someone throws a piece of paper. A couple of students get up and walk around. Others start laughing loudly. Someone yells! Suddenly, all of the students are doing things they would never do with the teacher in the room.
But you know what we say: When the cat's away, the mice will play!
③_____________ So, the teacher is the cat and the students are the mice. We often use this expression when talking about children and parents, employees and office supervisors and even people in committed relationships.
