This is not a diet. It’s a simple way to lose weight. And you don’t even have to give up the food you love or join a gym. It’s about balancing(平衡) calories in tiny ways that add up to big benefits. You just form some habits that lean people have. Stick with them, and you’ll become thin.
    (I)Wake-up
When your eyes open, sit up slowly without using your hands. With legs straight out, bend forward until you feel a stretch(舒展) in your back. Hold and then use your abs(腹部肌肉) to lower yourself flat. Rest and repeat two more times. It will burn about 10 calories.
    (II)Start with soup
When you have your meal, order a clear soup, and have it before having the main food. It can save twice the calories. Besides, you’ll feel fuller, so you’ll eat less when the main food comes.
(III)An apple (or more) a day
Apples are packed with fibre and water, so your stomach will want less. The study shows that people who eat at least three apples a day lose weight.
    (IV)Stand up and walk around
Every time you take the phone, stand up and walk around. Heavy people sit on average two and a half hours more per day than thin people. This trick is very important as standing up and walking around will burn 50 or more calories.
Use these tricks. With these small changes, you will have a big weight loss.
    21. What’s the purpose of this passage?
    A. To tell people how to enjoy a better life. B. To advise people to eat apples every day.
    C. To give some tips on how to lose weight. D. To advise people to get rid of bad habits.
    22. What does the underlined word "lean" in the first paragraph mean?
    A. Light. B. Pretty. C. Thin. D. Healthy.
    23. In which part of a newspaper would you most probably read this passage?
    A. Medicine. B. Health. C. Family. D. Teaching.

Max Mathews has been called the father of computer music. He created electronic tools so that people could use computers as musical instruments. He had a great influence on the development of electronic music and how it is written, recorded and played.
In 1957, Mathews wrote the first computer program that enabled a computer to create sound. At that time, he was working as an engineer at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. His computer program enabled a large IBM computer to play a 17 seconds piece of music that he had written. The computer was so slow that it would have taken an hour to play the piece of music in 17 seconds. For that reason, Mathews moved the work to a tape player, which could be sped up to play the music at a normal speed. He later said that the sound quality of the musical notes was not great, but the technical importance of the music was huge.
Mathews continued creating other versions of the music program. He became interested in how computers could help musicians outside recording studios. The Groove program he developed was the first computer program made for live performances.
He also developed an electronic device he called the Radio Baton. The device looks like two drum sticks. It enables the user to control the speed and sound levels of orchestral music playing on a computer. The user does this by moving the two sticks on a special electronic surface.
Mathews believed modern musicians are not making full use of the power of computer music. He said a violin always sounds like a violin. But with a computer, the way a violin sounds is unlimited. He said he didn’t want computer sounds to replace live music. But he said he hoped laptop computers would one day be considered serious instruments.
    24. What do we know about Mathews’s first piece of computer music?
    A. It took several minutes to play this music. B. It was written in the middle of the 1950s.
    C. It made the IBM computer work so slowly. D. It had the same good quality as other music.
    25. Mathews made the Groove program in order to .
    A. improve the sound quality of music B. create a record for recording studios
    C. improve the live performances D. develop the computer music
    26. From the text we know that the Radio Baton is .
    A. a computer program B. a piece of computer music
    C. an electronic device D. a recording studio
    27. According to the text, Mathews hoped that .
    A. computer sounds would take the place of live music
    B. modern musicians would make good use of computer music
    C. computers would change the musical instruments
    D. computers would be considered serious instruments

For many people, worrying is their life. They’re also anxious over things. They are anxious for family, friends, relatives and mankind. They fret(烦恼) about the past, the present and the future. I was once one of those people. Here’s some advice on how to stop worrying.
Let there be no crisis before its time. Don’t worry about something that’ll take place in a week, a day or even an hour. The variables(可变因素) will be different then. If you’ve to make a decision on Friday, wait until Friday. Squash(压制) unnecessary worrying with one question. If the answer is "no", stay in the present moment, write the thought quickly and then let it go.
Don’t let possessions possess you. Don’t let objects rule you. Don’t give them the power to spoil your day. Worrying over a problem after the fact can’t restore or bring anything back. The less you have, the less anxiety you bring into your life.
Set worry limits. If you can’t get worry under control right away, then establish limits. Set a timer or a watch alarm for 15 minutes. When the time is up, the alarm will be a tangible(切实的) reminder to let the worry go. Schedule this time when you’ve something important to do, so you’ll have to drop worry and refocus fast. Worrying is a choice, and you can choose not to do it.
Don’t control others with your worries. Worrying about loved ones wastes lots of time and opens up the door to permanent estrangement(疏远). Let people be who they are. Stop forcing others to do what will make you feel better, instead of what they want. Don’t manipulate(操纵) them into eating what you want them to eat, going where you want them to go, or doing what you want them to do under the guise(伪装) of love. Give people credit for having half a brain and knowing what’s good or bad for them. You’ll cut your worrying in half.
    28. What do you think of the author?
    A. She was willing to worry about others. B. She was much too worried one.
    C. She was anxious for dealing with others’ worry. D. She was too nervous to deal with worry.
    29. What should be our attitude to crisis?
    A. Just deal with the present crisis and let others go.
    B. Worry about something that’ll take place.
    C. Stay in the present moment.
    D. Think out ways to deal with it ahead of time.
    30. What should you be of life according to Paragraph 3?
    A. Witness. B. Inspector. C. Slave. D. Owner.
    31. In fact, worrying can .
    A. not be under control B. be controlled by time
    C. be limited and chosen D. be dropped randomly
    D
There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing(批评) and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation(模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact(接触) with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
    32. People who are unhappy .
    A. always consider things differently from others
    B. usually are affected by the results of certain things
    C. usually misunderstand what others think or say
    D. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things
    33. The phrase "sour the pleasure of society" most nearly means " ".
    A. have a good taste with social life B. make others unhappy
    C. tend to please others openly D. enjoy the pleasure of life
    34. We can conclude from the passage that .
    A. we should pity all such unhappy people
    B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
    C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
    D. unhappy people cannot understand happy persons
    35. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should .
    A. prevent any communication with them. B. show no respect and politeness to them.
    C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects. D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes.
