The first part of the Great Wall was built during the Spring and Autumn Period. In 221 B. C., Emperor Qin Shihuang had all the walls joined up. Since then, it has often been added to, rebuilt and repaired. All the work had to be done by hand. Because of bad conditions, thousands of people who worked on the wall died and were buried under the wall.
After the People’s Republic of China was founded, much work was done on the wall, and the Great Wall took on a new look.

One day in London
Upon arrival at the Royal National Hotel, we stored our luggage and went touring together.
Our first stop was the British Museum which was everything that I had hoped it would be.
Then we bought passes to the “tube” and explored the rest of the city without any organized tour. It was a very productive day.
Our first stop was to Big Ben and the House of Parliament. My trip on the London Eye did not expose great British vistas(景色), as the skies were very gray. We had lunch near the London Eye. What I found most interesting about this restaurant was that none of the staff was British. Our waiter was actually from Quebec. We also went to Westminster Abbey and St Margaret’s Church, an experience I did not enjoy. The statues of the deceased(去世的) iron men frightened me. The weather really set the mood for this latter visit as it was fairly windy and rained off and on. When it began to hail(冰雹) briefly, we decided to call it a day. ■
