I spent my childhd cllecting and pressing fur-leaf clvers(三叶草)int bks at my mther's huse. I started with big clth-and-leather-bund bks. When I ran ut f bund vlumes, I began t slip my treasures int anything I culd find, such as ld fictin paperbacks and ckbks. The same is true in my huse tday. Shake a bk, and a treasure just might fall int yur hand.
A few years ag, in Nva Sctia, my husband and I pulled ff the rad fr a picnic. The grund was thick with clvers. Sme shts had fur, five, r even six leaves. I lined them up n the picnic table t admire. T me, it was simple. The differences in their shapes made them stand ut, breaking the pretty pattern f the cmmn clvers with three perfect leaves.
Tw summers back, while waiting fr an airprt shuttle in Munich, I fund a tiny fur-leaf clver in a traffic circle and put it in my passprt. On the way hme, my husband and I were upgraded t business class. All f my friends wed it t the clver. I think it's sme likely that we were upgraded because a flight was pstpned, which left us trapped in tw cities fr several hurs.
Peple disagree abut whether the luck cmes fr finding r pssessing a clver. Sme believe that the luck is lst if the fur-leaf clver is shwn t smebdy else, while thers think that the luck dubles if it is given away. I believe that psitivity is cmpunded by sharing. I feel lucky t find the clvers s ften, but I dn't think they influence my life any mre than it des t share anything a little special with a friend r a stranger.
24. What was the authr's hbby as a child?

Past surveys have shwn that mre than 80%f dg wners reprt bserving jealus behavir frm their dgs-vcalizatins, disturbed behavir, pulling n a leash(绳子)-when they give attentin t ther dgs. New research published in the jurnal Psychlgical Science supprts these bservatins and finds that dgs als exhibit jealus behavir when they merely imagine that their wner is interacting with a ptential ppnent, in this case, a highly realistic artificial dg.
Dgs appear t be ne f the few species that might display jealus behavir in ways similar t a human child shwing jealusy when their mther gives affectin t anther child. In humans, jealusy is clsely linked with self-awareness, which is ne reasn animal-cgnitin researchers are s interested in studying jealusy and ther secndary emtins in animals.
T test hw and when dgs display jealus behavir, the researchers presented 18 dgs with situatins where they culd imagine a scial interactin between their human cmpanin and either a realistic fake dg r a wl cylinder(圆柱). The fake dg served as a ptential ppnent fr attentin while the cylinder served as a cntrl. In the experiment, the dgs bserved the fake-dg ppnent psitined next t their wner. A barrier was then placed between the dg and the ptential ppnent stpping them frm view. Despite blcking the line f sight, the dgs frcefully attempted t reach their wners when they appeared t strke the fake dg behind the barrier. In a repeat experiment using a fleece cylinder rather than a fake dg, the dgs pulled n the leash with far less frce.
Thrugh their study, the researchers fund that dgs shwed three human-like features f jealus behavir. This behavir emerged nly when their wner interacted with a nticed scial ppnent and nt a lifeless bject; ccurred as a cnsequence f that interactin and nt due t a ptential ppnent's mere presence; and emerged even fr an ut-f-sight interactin between their wner and a scial ppnent.
"These results supprt claims that dgs display jealus behavir. They als prvide the first evidence that dgs can mentally represent jealusy-causing scial interactins," said the researchers. "But there is still plenty f wrk t d t establish the extent f the similarities between the minds f humans and ther animals, especially in terms f understanding the nature f nnhuman animals' emtinal experiences. It is t early t say whether dgs experience jealusy as we d, but it is nw clear that they react t jealusy-causing situatins, even if these ccur ut f sight."
28. Why des the authr mentin the new research in Psychlgical Science?
A. T make cmparisn. B. T make a predictin.
C. T prvide example. D. T intrduce the tpic.
29. Why was a barrier used in the experiment?
A. T distract dgs' attentin. B. T blck the sight f the dg.
C. T serve as a ptential cmpetitr. D. T prtect the fake dg frm attack.
30. What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
A. Dgs can experience jealusy as humans d.
B. Dgs make reactins based n their imaginatin.
C. Mre research is needed t study emtins f animals.
D. It is the first time that dgs have represented jealus behavir mentally.
31. Which f the fllwing is the suitable title fr the text?
A. Are dgs jealus as humans? B. Dgs, faithful friends f humans!
C. Be careful abut the jealus dgs! D. Are dgs the mst clever animals?

Harvard scientists have created a "binic(仿生的)leaf" that turns slar energy int liquid fuel. The wrk is the fruit f cperatin between Prfessr Pamela Silver at Harvard Medical Schl and Prfessr Daniel Ncera in the Faculty f Arts and Sciences.
The pair, wh began cperating tw years ag, share an interest in develping energy surces that might smeday have practical applicatin in remte areas in the develping wrld. Silver named the system "binic" because it jins a bilgical system t a clever piece f inrganic chemistry previusly develped by Ncera: that inventin, widely knwn as the artificial leaf, turns slar energy int hydrgen fuel.
Ncera's artificial leaf, which serves as fuel surce in the binic leaf, wrks by sandwiching a phtvltaic cells(光电池)between tw metal xide catalysts(氧化催化物). When put in water at rm temperature and nrmal atmspheric pressure, the artificial leaf cpies phtsynthesis(光合作用). Ncera has been perfecting the artificial leaf since he first demnstrated it in 2011;tday.it is far mre efficient than a field-grwn plant, which assimilates nly 1 percent f sunlight's energy.
The hydrgen is a fuel with a brad use, Ncera reprts, and culd easily becme the basis f a fuel cell, but it has nt been widely adpted, partly because it is a gas. By cntrast, liquid fuels are much easier t handle and stre.
"Mdern sciety", says Ncera, "has created an entire manufacturing ecnmy based nt nly n burning fssil fuels, but n using petrleum t make things such as rubber and plastics." "A lt f chemistry was dne which set that up," he ntes. The present system makes sense nw because petrleum csts s little; a sustainable system like the artificial r binic leaf can't cmpete with that. But when il becmes less and less, he say, "We might want t red everything in terms f manufacturing. In the future, yu might want t make everything renewable. Then, yu can trust binic leaf."
32. What can be implied frm the secnd paragraph?
A. The pair invented the artificial leaf.
B. Binic leaf gt its name frm its inventin develped by Ncera.
C. The pair are cncerned abut energy surces in develping cuntries.
D. Bth binic leaf and artificial leaf can change slar energy int liquid fuel.
33. The underlined "assimilates" in paragraph 3 mst nearly means .
A. recrds B. absrbs C. attracts D. equals
34. Why des Ncera have faith in binic leaf?
A. Fssil fuels nw are exhausted and cannt be emplyed.
B. Binic leaf guarantees a sustainable energy supply cmpared with il.
C. Liquid fuels created by binic leaf are much easier t handle and stre.
D. Binic leaf is far mre efficient than a field-grwn plant and fssil fuels.
35. What des the authr mainly talk abut cncerning the binic leaf?
A. Its scientific efficiency. B. Its current cmmercial uses.
C. Its develpment and significance. D. Its difference frm the artificial leaf.

Test yurself
Nebel's preferred study habit is ne f the best way. Befre big tests, Nebel's mm quizzed her n the material. "Nw I knw that was retrieval(检索)practice," she says. As Nebel gt lder, she quizzed herself. " 39 ," Nebel suggests. "Put questins n ne side and the answers n the ther side and try t quiz yurself the way the teacher asks questins," she adds.
Dig deeper
It's hard t remember a string f facts and figures if yu dn't push further. Ask why things are a certain way. Hw did they cme abut? Why d they matter? Psychlgists call this elabratin. It's taking class material and asking a lt f hw and why questins abut it. This helps yu cmbine new infrmatin with ther things yu knw.
