Sme Difficult Dialects in China
A city best knwn fr its millinaires and factries is nw better knwn in China fr its unintelligible dialect.
That's accrding t a pst titled 'China's Tp 10 Mst Difficult Dialects' -- knwn as fang yan in Mandarin -- that's been trending n Weib, China's micr-blgging service. Wenzhu, the cmmercial city in Zhejiang prvince, tk the crwn.'Even if yu're nt afraid f the sky r the earth, yu're afraid f the Wenzhu devil-language,' wrte the authr f the tp 10 list.
The authr, wh psted the list, writes that the Wenzhu dialect is s difficult that during the war against Japan, the Chinese Cmmunist Party's Eighth Rute Army used Wenzhu speakers t relay messages s that Japanese intelligence fficers wuld nt be able t understand them.
Cantnese cmes in at an unsurprising secnd place. The pst ntes that while Cantnese is 'trendy' and many peple can say at least a few wrds f it, the fact that it has its wn written characters -- and that in Guangzhu public annuncements, Cantnese is ften bradcast befre Mandarin -- highlight the huge difference between the tw languages. Such a gap als cntinues t persist in Hng Kng, which returned t Chinese cntrl in 1997 but cntinues t perate using Cantnese. 'Sme peple in Hng Kng can't even understand Mandarin,' the authr adds.
Suzhu shares third place with suthern Fujian prvince's Minnan dialect, als widely spken in Taiwan and amng diaspra ppulatins in Sutheast Asia.
In a cuntry as large and linguistically diverse as China, there exists difficulty t understand a certain dialects, because China has s many kinds f reginal languages and culture.
