Whether it's to help their dogs or themselves, about half of all Americans surveyed in a recent poll (民意测验) say they exercise regularly. According to the poll, most people walk for exercise a few times a week. About a third say they walk every day.
But are they kidding themselves to think a walk is really helping them? Should we all be running or jogging if we want to count that activity as good for us? Dr. Tim Church, who studies the effects of physical activity at Louisiana State University's Pennington Biomedical Research Center, made a study about that.
Church headed a study with 464 postmenopausal (绝经后的) women who, for six months, came into the lab to walk a treadmill (跑步机) while researchers watched.
The first group walked for 73 minutes a week, the second 136 minutes a week and the third 190 minutes weekly. These women were walking slowly, and could easily carry on a conversation.
“Surprisingly, the group that was only walking for 73 minutes a week slowly benefited a lot,” Church says. They say they've gotten more physically active from walking. They haven't necessarily lost weight, but their pants fit differently. It's because they have less belly fat, he says, which is a very good thing. This document from the American Heart Association lists dozens of studies showing similar benefits from walking.
And in Church's study, participants gained more than physical benefits. They also gained benefits like less anxiety and fewer symptoms of depression: They also discovered something many of us long for: more energy.
“It wasn't a doseresponse (剂量效应) — as in, ‘the more exercise you did, the more your energy increased,’”Church says. “Actually, all three exercise groups increased their levels of energy the same.”
1.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.If people should walk the dog.
B.The effect of running or jogging.
C.If people need to exercise hard to benefit.
D.The importance of doing exercise regularly.
2.The three groups in Church's study ________.
A.were of different ages
B.were required to walk slowly
C.were in different physical condition
D.were required to do different exercises
3.At the end of Church's study, women in the first group________.
A.lost weight B.lost belly fat
C.benefited little D.benefited the most

I decided to ski to the North Pole. It was after I saw an advertisement in a newspaper looking for people to join a team to ski 350 miles to the North Pole. Back in 1996, there had never been a woman from the UK who had accomplished this challenge. I wondered what it would be like to survive in temperatures cold enough to freeze your flesh in seconds, so I sent off for the application form.
The application form full of pictures of male explores arrived. The words “Are you man enough for the ultimate (极限的) challenge?” made me angry and even more determined to get on the team.
Over 500 individuals applied for a place in the team, and the selection process included physical and psychological tests designed to pick the best group. In one test, there was a huge rope ladder we had to climb, and I froze at the top because I have a fear of heights. I thought my hopes were fading as most other applicants sailed past, leaving me behind. But two others helped me over, and later I found out that the organizers were not looking for amazing individuals, but great team players, and this moment had shown them who would take care of others in the team.
I had revealed (显示) my weakness, and in a place like the Arctic, you have to be yourself, as there is nowhere to hide. These personalities of asking for help and showing weakness are necessary for women to master.
I realized that by being myself, I could succeed. I was selected for the team. I realized that I could achieve more than I ever imagined — more importantly, by sharing my story with others, I could inspire them to take a step into the new world and reveal more of their abilities.
4.How did the author react on seeing the advertisement?
A.She got cross. B.She was determined.
C.She got frightened. D.She was hesitating.
5.What did the organizers view as the most important in the selection of new hands?
A.Personal quality. B.Individualability.
C.Spirit of teamwork. D.Courage to challenge.
6.What does the author think of women's showing weakness?
A.Beneficial. B.Shameful.
C.Merciful. D.Disturbing.
7.What's the intention of the author in writing this passage?
A.To inspire us to prepare for our future goal.
B.To advise women how to turn to others.
C.To make suggestions to her team members.
D.To encourage people to explore the unknown.

It's spring now. After a long, cold winter, your waistline may have expanded a bit and you may be considering a diet.
Just do a quick Internet search of “crash diets”. The results are endless. “From start to finish, I dropped about 20 pounds,” Megan Costic said about her crash diet. “I cut everything out: I wasn't even eating vegetables at the end of it.”
It was all to prepare for a bodybuilding show. Costic says it's not the way she normally prepares, nor the way she should prepare. “It wasn't supposed to be a crash diet. I just started my plan a little too late,” said Costic.
So what happened after the show? Exactly what you might expect. Costic gained all the weight back, and fast. “I deprived (剥夺) my body of so much stuff, once my body tasted all those salty, sugary, fattening foods, it wanted more and more,” said Costic.
Costic is not alone. Wellness Dietitian with ProMedica Health Systems Nathan Drendel says he has seen it all. “People lose 15~20 pounds and they don't learn anything but deprivation and they overeat and put 25 on. Then they drop 30 and put 35 on,” explained Drendel. “It can have problems with the heart, and the immune system. It can mess up your metabolism (新陈代谢) over time if you do it for a long time,” said Drendel.
Doctor Ameer Kabour, Chief of Cardiology for Mercy St. Vincent's, says his department sees a lot of people with heart problems this time of year, after doing a crash diet. “Because of that diet, people have a significant drop in their blood pressure and they pass out (昏迷),” said Kabour.
8.Why did Costic try crash diets?
A.To change her lifestyle.
B.To prepare for a show.
C.To keep fit and healthy.
D.To enjoy the spring season.
9.What can we learn from Costic's case?
A.People should keep on trying crash diets.
B.Crash diets are only suitable for some people.
C.People should go on a diet as early as possible.
D.Crash diets aren't an effective way of losing weight.
10.What will probably happen after people have a crash diet?
A.They will eat more healthily.
B.They will have health problems.
C.They will lose their taste for food.
D.They will keep their normal weight.
11.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To explain the harm of crash diets.
B.To share doctors' view on crash diets.
C.To tell us a proper way to be on a diet.
D.To explore an easy and ideal way to lose weight.

Have you ever listened to the sound of a raindrop? You might call the small sounds earth songs. Is it possible to catch earth songs, to put them into words?
Long ago, poets in Japan listened, watched, and did catch the beauty of the earth's songs. They did this with the tiniest poems in the world, called haiku. A haiku is a poem that is just three lines and seventeen syllables long. And the poets who wrote them watched and listened, not only with their eyes and ears, but also with their hearts!
In their haiku, the early Japanese poets caught the colors, sounds, and beauties of the seasons of the year. They sang of their islands' beauties. Their miniature poems were not meant to fully describe a scene or to explain it but rather were a flash impression.
The old poets are not the only writers of haiku. Today Japanese farmers, shopkeepers, grandparents, and students write it, and because of its strong appeal, haiku is written in many other countries throughout the world.
Interestingly enough, Japanese poetry has had a long and colorful history. In the prehaiku period in the early eighth century, Japanese poets wrote katauta, poems in a questionandanswer form, using two people. Each threeline verse (诗节) contained about seventeen syllables that could be delivered easily in one breath — just as one would naturally ask or answer a question. This has remained the basic pattern for traditional Japanese poetry throughout the centuries.
Another form that appeared was the tanka, which contained five lines and thirtyone syllables (57577), written by either one or two persons. From that evolved (发展) the renga, which contained more than one verse, or link. Written by three or more people, it could have as many as 100 links! The first verse of the renga introduced a subject. It had three lines and was called the hokku, or starting verse. Renga parties became a great pleasure.
Around 1450, haikai no renga became popular. This style of linked verse contained puns (双关) and was humorous and amusing. The opening three lines were still called a hokku, and from haikai and hokku the term haiku evolved.
12.What does the underlined word “miniature” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Easy. B.Little. C.Detailed. D.Selected.
13.We know from the text that katauta ________.
A.was humorous and amusing
B.contained thirtyone syllables
C.could have as many as 100 links
D.was written in a questionandanswer form
14.According to the text, what was the main activity at a renga party?
A.Creating a group poem.
B.Changing haiku into tanka.
C.Studying the history of renga.
D.Competing to write earth songs.
15.Information in this text would be of most value to readers who want to ________.
A.teach how to write haiku
B.research the history of haiku
C.compare Japanese and American poetry
D.find suggestions about hosting a renga party

Someone in the U.S.is diagnosed (诊断) with blood cancer every three minutes. And although about three in ten blood cancer patients can find a matching donor in their families, 70 percent of patients depend on a stranger to step in.That was enough for me to know I wanted to help.
I registered online with Delete Blood Cancer. 16 Four years later I got an email from the organization and it said I had a possible match. To make sure all systems were a go, I had a couple of extra blood tests.I needed to donate bone marrow (骨髓). 17 And my bonemarrow recipient was a little girl.
Four months later, donation day arrived. At 9 a.m., the procedure started.By noon, I was already on my way home from the hospital. 18 My butt (臀部) was sore, like I had bruised my taibone or something. The doctors said the pain is worse the more sedentary (久坐的) you are, so I walked around my Long Island neighborhood several hours after the procedure.
19 The discomfort was secondary to the emotional high of helping a little girl with cancer. To me, it doesn't matter that I've never met the girl who received my bone marrow — that I don't even know her name.I still feel like I have such a powerful connection with her. 20
A year later, I haven't heard how my bonemarrow recipient is doing.Delete Blood Cancer hasn't come back to me asking for another bone marrow donation, so I'm hoping that's a good sign. But if they do call me back, whether it's for her or someone else, I'd do it again.
A.I won't lie — for a while, I was in pain.
B.I immediately broke down into tears on the phone.
C.There's something within our DNA that brought us together.
D.That's most often the case with young bloodcancer patients.
E.Even though the doctors gave me painkillers, I didn't take any.
F.I met with all of the doctors who would be performing the procedure.
G.Then my DNA was collected to see if I was a match for any patients in need.

Sometimes your biggest_weakness can become_your_biggest_strength.Every one has his own weakness, but God always offers his unexpected strength in his misfortune. We’d make full use of it just like the girl below,we are certainly fortunate to be given other blessings from Heaven.
The story of one girl who decided to study judo(柔道) despite the fact that she had lost her left_arm_in a car accident.
The girl began lessons with an old Japanese judo_instructor.The girl was doing well.So she couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the instructor had taught her only one_move.
“Instructor,” the girl finally said,“Shouldn’t I be learning more moves? It isn’t far enough to learn just this.”
“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the instructor replied.
Not quite understanding, but believing in her teacher, the girl kept training. She didn’t dare to complain_about anything and it was apparent that since her teacher said so,she had to follow without any unhappiness.
Several months later, the instructor took the girl to her first tournament.Surprising herself, the girl easily won her first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, her opponent became impatient and charged. The girl skillfully used her one move to win the match.Still amazed by her success, the girl was now_in_the_finals.
This time, her opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the girl appeared to be over matched.Concerned that the girl might get hurt,the_referee called a time out.She was about to stop the match when the instructor interrupted.
“No,” the instructor insisted,“Let her continue.”
Soon after the match started again, her opponent made a critical mistake: she dropped her guard.Instantly, the girl used her move to hold her opponent tightly. The girl had won the match and the tournament. She was the champion.

Dear Peter,
Thank you for your last letter. Now I'd like to tell you my opinion.
Nowadays, the environmental pollution is becoming a global problem. As a student, I want to save energy, reduce pollution and have a Low-carbon life.
Firstly, I will save water by turning off the tap when I brush my teeth. Secondly, I will save electricity by turning off the lights ,computers and fans when leaving the room. Thirdly, I make full use of my things and reduce the possibility of buying the things which I don't need.
Do you agree with me? I wish more and more students can be aware of this problem and try to do what we can to make the earth more and more beautiful.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours
Li Hua
读后续写
On the way home, the girl and her teacher reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the girl took courage to ask what was really on her mind.“Instructor, how did I win the tournament with only one_move?Is there any magic power about it? Is my opponent much weaker than me?Please tell me the secret.” The judo_instructor and his pupil talked excitedly as walking forward. She couldn’t wait to know the answer, but the instructor appeared unhurriedly. Finally he opened his mouth.
“Two reasons account for that you won,” the teacher answered.“First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo.Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left_arm.It is your biggest_weakness that makes you win the match. As a proverb says,‘Every coin has two sides.’ Making full use of your strength is your achievement. Please remember that in no case will you give up especially in trouble.God is fair to everyone.”
