Yu never see them, but they're with yu every time yu fly. They recrd where yu are ging, hw fast yu're traveling and whether everything n yur airplane is functining nrmally. Their ability t withstand(抵挡) almst any disaster makes them seem like smething ut f a cmic bk. They're knwn as the black bx.
When planes fall frm the sky, as a Yemeni airliner did n its way t Cmrs Islands in the India Ocean June 30, 2009, the black bx is the best bet fr identifying what went wrng. S when a French submarine detected the device's hming signal five days later, the discvery marked a huge step tward determining the cause f a tragedy in which 152 passengers were killed.
In 1958, Australian scientist David Warren develped a flight-memry recrder that wuld track basic infrmatin like altitude and directin. That was the first mde fr a black bx, which became a requirement n all U.S. cmmercial flights by 1960. Early mdel, ften failed t withstand crashes, hwever, s in 1965 the device was cmpletely redesigned and mved t the rear f the plane - the area least subject t impact - frm its riginal psitin in the landing wells (起落架舱). The same year, the Federal Aviatin Authrity required that the bxes, which were never actually black, be painted range r yellw t be visible. Mdern airplanes have tw black bxes: a vice recrder, which tracks pilts' cnversatins, and a flight-data recrder, which mnitrs fuel levels, engine nises and ther perating functins that help investigatrs recnstruct the aircraft’s final mments. Experts believe the bxes frm Air France Flight 447, which crashed near Brazil n June 1, 2009, are in water nearly that deep, but statistics say they’re still likely t turn up. In the apprximately 20 deep-sea crashes ver the past 30 years, nly ne plane’s black bxes were never recvered.
24. What infrmatin culd be fund frm the black bx n the Yemeni airliner?
A. Data fr analyzing the cause f the crash.
B. The ttal number f passengers n bard.
C. The scene f the crash and level f the damage.
D. Hming signals sent by the pilt befre the crash.
25. Why was the black bx redesigned in 1965?
A. New materials became available by that time.
B. T much space was needed fr its installatin.
C. The early mdels ften gt damaged in the crash.
D. The early mdels didn't prvide the needed data.
26. Why did the Federal Aviatin Authrity require the black bxes be painted range r yellw?
A. T distinguish them frm the clur f the plane.
B. T cautin peple t handle them with care.
C. T bey internatinal standards
D. T make them easily seen.
27. What d we knw abut the black bxes frm Air France Flight 447?
A. There is an urgent need fr them t be recnstructed.
B. There is still a gd chance f their being recvered.
C. They have stpped sending hming signals.
D. They were destryed smewhere near France.

Hw des an ecsystem wrk? What makes the ppulatin f different species the way they are? Why are there s many flies and s few wlves? T find an answer, scientists have built mathematical mdels f fd webs, nting wh eats whm and hw much each ne eats.
With such mdels, scientists have fund ut sme key principles perating in fd webs. Mst fd webs, fr example, cnsist f many weak links rather than a few strng nes. When a predatr(掠食动物) always eats huge numbers f a single prey(猎物), the tw species are strngly linked;when a predatr lives n varius species, they are weakly linked. Fd webs may be dminated by many weak links because that arrangement is mre stable ver the lng term. If a predatr can eat several species, it can survive the extinctin(灭绝)f ne f them. And if a predatr can mve n t anther species that is easier t find when a prey species becmes rare, the switch allws t riginal prey t recver. The weak links may thus keep species frm driving ne anther t extinctin.
Mathematical mdels have als revealed that fd webs may be unstable, where small changes f tp predatrs can lead t big effects thrughut entire ecsystems. In the 1960s, scientists prpsed that predatrs at the tp f a fd web had a surprising amunt f cntrl ver the size f ppulatins f ther species-including species they did nt directly attack.
And unplanned human activities have prved the idea f tp-dwn cntrl by tp predatrs t be true. In the cean, we fished fr tp predatrs such as cd n an industrial scale, while n land, we killed ff large predatrs such as wlves. These actins have greatly affected the eclgical balance.
Scientists have built an early-warning system based n mathematical mdels. Ideally, the system wuld tell us when t adapt human activities that are pushing an ecsystem tward a breakdwn r wuld even allw us t pull an ecsystem back frm the brderline. Preventin is key, scientists say, because nce ecsystems pass their tipping pint(临界点), it is remarkably difficult fr them t return.
28. What have scientists discvered with the help f mathematical f fd webs?
A. The living habits f species in fd webs.
B. The rules gverning fd webs f the ecsystems.
C. The appraches t studying the species in the ecsystems.
D. The differences between weak and strng links in fd webs.
29. A strng link is fund between tw species when a predatr______.
A. has a wide fd chice.B. can easily find new prey.
C. sticks t ne prey species D. can quickly mve t anther place
30. What cnclusin can be drawn frm the examples in Paragraph 4?
A. Industrial activities help keep fd webs stable.
B. Rapid ecnmic develpment threatens animal habitats.
C. Species f cmmercial value dminate ther species.
D. Uncntrlled human activities greatly upset ecsystems.
31. Hw des an early-warning system help us maintain the eclgical balance?
A. By getting illegal practices under cntrl.
B. By stpping us frm killing large predatrs.
C. By bringing the brken-dwn ecsystems back t nrmal.
D. By signaling the urgent need fr taking preventive actin.

Such memry-like mental representatins cme ver time, t be cllectively experienced when they cme t mind, s fr the individual, they quite simply are memries, which particularly pint t babyhd.”
"Imprtantly, the persn remembering them desn't knw this is fictinal," study c-authr Martin Cnway said “In fact, when peple are tld that their memries are false they ften dn't believe it. ”
32. What can we learn frm a recent study?
