Icelanders have a beautiful tradition of giving books to each other on Christmas Eve and then spending the night reading. This custom is so deeply rooted in the culture that it is the reason for the Jolabokaflod, or "Christmas Book Flood", when the majority of books in Iceland are sold between September and December in preparation for Christmas giving.
At this time of year, most families receive a yearly free book catalog of new publications called the Bokatidindi. Icelanders read the new catalog carefully and choose which books they want to buy, fueling what Kristjan B. Jonasson, president of the Iceland Publishers Association. describes as "the backbone of the publishing industry".
The small Nordic island, with a population of only 329, 000 people, is extraordinarily literary. They love to read and write. According to Rosie Goldsmith of the BBC. "The country has more writers, more books published and more books read, than most countries in the world."
In North America, e-books have grown in popularity-it's not the same in Iceland. One bookstore manager told NPR, "In Iceland, you give paper books instead of e-books as gifts." The book industry is driven by the majority of people buying several books each year, rather than the North American pattern of a few people buying a lot of books.
When I asked an Icelandic friend what she thought of this tradition, she was surprised. "I hadn't thought of this as a special Icelandic tradition. It's true that a book is always considered as a nice gift. We're very proud of our authors," said she.
It sounds like a wonderful tradition, perfect for a winter evening. I'll include it into my own family's celebration of Christmas. I doubt my loyalty(忠诚)to paper books will ever fade; they are what I can't resist collecting, in order to read and re-read them, to beautify and personalize my home, to pass them on to friends and family as needed. Combining my love for books with quiet and relaxing Christmas Eves sounds like a perfect match.
24. Why do many Icelanders buy books between September and December?
A. To honor Kristjan B. Jonasson. B. To use them as Christmas gifts.
C. To prepare for a reading festival. D. To support the publishing industry.
25. What can we know about the book industry in Iceland?
A. E-books have become more popular. B. Paper books are placed more value on.
C. People's love for books seems to fade. D. A few people buy most of the new books.
26. What does the author's Icelandic friend think of the Icelandic tradition?
A. It comes as a surprise. B. It proves less popular.
C. It is rather unique. D. It is quite ordinary.
27. What is the last paragraph intended to show?
A. The author's family tradition on Christmas. B. The reason for the author's interest in reading.
C. The influence of the tradition on the author. D. The wide spread of the wonderful tradition.
C
Even though we may believe that it's important to say thank you, sometimes expressing gratitude is easier said than done. We might find ourselves getting hung up on the best way to deliver the message.
However, it's possible that we might be making our thanks more complex. In a paper, researchers compared the effects of expressing thanks in person, over a video call, and over text. And, while people generally expect an in-person thank-you to be the most effective, what happened in reality was quite different: Sending a thank-you over text was almost as effective as that. Additionally, texting may be especially well-suited for situations where we feel awkward or embarrassed about expressing our appreciation.
In the study, 219 college students participated in a gratitude activity in which they wrote about three things they were grateful for over a two-week period. After writing, the students were asked to actually thank the persons involved. Some connected with the gratitude recipients(接受者)in person, others via video call, and others via text. At the beginning and end of the two weeks, participants completed surveys measuring their feelings of well-being, connections with others, loneliness and happiness.
The researchers found that people who expressed gratitude gained increased happiness, with only a few differences for the different methods of gratitude expression. Overall, video calls were just as beneficial as meeting in person. Texting was slightly less effective than video calling-it didn't make people feel more connected and happier, while video calling did. However, participants who sent their thanks over text still experienced benefits: Texting improved their well-being and reduced their loneliness.
Overall, however, the message is that we shouldn't worry about finding just the "best" way to express our gratitude. In fact, you're better off sending a quick thank-you shortly after you receive the kindness than waiting for an occasion to schedule an in-person visit. Don't put it off just for finding the best way-many times our gratitude goes unsaid because we spend too much time on the details.
28. What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Making a video call. B. Sending a text message.
C. Expressing thanks in person. D. Writing a thank-you letter.
29. Why did the researchers ask the students to finish surveys?
A. To find the effect of expressing thanks on them. B. To measure their physical health.
C. To collect a lot more ways to express thanks. D. To know their views on gratitude.
30. What did the research suggest?
A. In-person gratitude was less likely to be accepted.
B. Expressing gratitude could benefit mental health.
C. Ways of gratitude expression should be improved.
D. Texting made the gratitude recipients much happier.
31. What are we advised to do to express thanks?
A. Search for the best way. B. Wait for an in-person visit.
C. Express gratitude in time. D. Make careful preparations.

Five years ago, French navy officer Jerome Chardon was listening to a radio program about the journey of the bar-tailed godwit, a bird that migrates 14,000 kilometers between New Zealand and Alaska. Chardon understood how treacherous the journey would be, as heavy storms frequently hit Pacific island communities. Yet, somehow, bar-tailed godwits routinely pass through the area uninjured. Chardon wondered whether learning how birds traveled could help coastal communities avoid natural disasters.
This past January, a team from France's National Museum of Natural History(NMNH) began experiments designed to test Chardon's idea. Researchers with a project led by Frederic Jiguet from NMNH equipped 56 birds of five species with cutting-edge animal tracking technology. The team members were ferried to remote islands in French Polynesia. where they attached tags(标签)using tracking technology. These tags sent the birds' locations to the International Space Station, which bounced the data back to scientists on Earth who could then follow the birds-waiting to see how the birds responded to natural disasters.
The project is focusing on birds' ability to hear infrasound, the low-frequency sound humans cannot hear but that the researchers believe is the most likely signal birds would use to sense storms and tsunamis(海啸). In a 2014 study, scientists tracking a kind of golden-winged birds in the central and southeastern America found that the birds flew up to 1,500 kilometers to escape from an outbreak of tornadoes(龙卷风)that killed 35 people. The birds fled at least 24 hours before any extreme weather hit, leaving the scientists to believe that they had heard the storm system from more than 400 kilometers away.
The team plans on tagging hundreds more birds across the Pacific to prepare for a potential tsunami. "I think if there's one wave that spreads across islands, we can get data from different species at different locations," says Jiguet. "That will say it's worth continuing to tag and to develop local systems to better analyze this. There are chances that we will develop a bird-based tsunami early warning system."
32. Which of the following best explains the word "treacherous" underlined in paragraph 1?
A. Strange. B. Boring. C. Frequent. D. Dangerous.
33. What is the function of the tags?
A. Tracking natural disasters. B. Distinguishing bird species.
C. Guiding researchers to islands. D. Reporting the birds' locations.
34. Why is the 2014 study mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To prove an assumption. B. To clarify a concept.
C. To present a new topic. D. To make comparisons.
35. What might be the best title for the text?
A. How Can Birds Avoid Natural Disasters? B. Can Birds Warn Us of Natural Disasters?
C. How Does a Warning System Function? D. Can Birds Play a Role in Human Research?
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It's been happening lately. I go out on a hike or trail running(越野跑), and before I even see a hiker coming in the other direction, I hear him/her. No, not a loud conversation, but the tinny but annoying sound of someone's phone playing music. Maybe the hiker feels lonely without a device playing sound, or maybe he/she is just uncomfortable listening to the sounds of nature. 36
My point is that it's rude to everyone else who's in the woods with you that day, who might be out there to enjoy the quiet time away from the world. 37 However, many of us are there to get away from exactly what you're forcing us to listen to-the particular sounds of your humanity(人性).
Don't get me wrong; actually I love music. I even occasionally listen to it when I run. But I don't play it out loud. 38 In that way, I can enjoy whatever I am listening to without causing disturbance to someone else.
To be honest, that someone doesn't say anything when you hike with speakers doesn't mean that it's not ruining their outdoor time. 39 Time out in nature can be a break from our noisy cities-but it's not true if others are playing music out loud. So the better experience for us is no music at all so that we can take in the sounds of nature.
40 But part of being outside is respecting the environment you're in and the people you're sharing it with. If you want to run along to a soundtrack, please do. But remember to put your headphones on.
A. Instead, I listen on my headphones.
B. Each of us enjoys nature in our own way.
C. In other words, it's louder than you think.
D. I'm not sure, and honestly, I don't really care.
E. I often avoid playing music while hiking outside.
F. Maybe it is not why you are out on the trails that day.
G. You should remember that noisy music is disturbance, too.
