Salt has been one of the most valuable things in human history. If you think it is just a simple cooking material we use on our food, you are wrong. It is much more than that. In ancient times, you couldn't buy salt at local stores. People found salt they needed to stay alive in coastal(沿海的) areas where ocean water evaporated(蒸发) and left salt on the ground or underground. So those who lived near the ocean were lucky. They also got salt from the animals they killed.
Salt is as valuable as the water we drink and the air we breathe(呼吸). Without salt, we can’t live. Salt allows people to keep food fresher for longer. In the old days when there was no fridge, people stored meat and vegetables by salting them. Salted food made it possible for large groups of people to stay alive.
Salt was so valuable in some areas that it was used as a way of payment to trade (交易) goods and services. In Tibet, China, small pressed cakes of salt (盐饼) were used as coins. Greek slave(奴隶) traders traded salt for slaves. African traders crossed the Sahara Desert to trade for gold. Roman soldiers were even paid with salt. This is where the word salary (薪水) comes from.
Today, people still use the expression “worth one’s salt”. It shows a person has the ability to do his or her work well. If a person is described as “the salt of the earth”, he or she is a good and honest person that you can always depend on. But do not think “rubbing salt in the wound” will help. Doing that will be painful and won't be good for the wound. “Rubbing salt in the wound” means purposefully making a bad thing worse.
- In the old days in , people were even paid with salt.

Sixty-eight cultural relics(文物) that were recently returned to China were warmly welcomed by Chinese people.
The relics, which were smuggled(走私) to the United Kingdom in the past, arrived in Beijing on Oct. 20, the National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA) said at a news conference(会议) on Nov. 18.
These relics include a number of fine works of art such as plates and teacups. Dating back(追溯到) to a time lasting from the Spring and Autumn Period to the Qing Dynasty, they come from many different provinces, including Fujian, Hebei and Guizhou, Xinhua reported.
Back in 1995, British police found these relics while investigating(调查)an international relic-smuggling ring(团伙). After learning of the discovery, China set up a special working group to bring the items home, People’s Daily reported.
However, a local buyer of the relics refused to negotiate(磋商) their return, so British police held the relics for 25 years. But contact between the Chinese and British governments never stopped, according to Guan Qian deputy director of the NCHA.
In January, the British police told China that the local buyer was missing and that the relics therefore had no owner. The UK offered to return the relics to China, Global Times noted.
“The return is a successful example of cooperation(合作) between China and the UK in fighting cultural relic smuggling under the 1970 Convention(公约),” Guan said at the news conference.
The 1970 Convention requires its members to take action to prevent the smuggling of cultural property(文化遗产), according to the United Nations.
