It was the first day of our vacation on Cortes, a beautiful quiet island. “iPhone, iPhone, iPhone,” my son kept moaning(呻吟) for several minutes. In front of him was a big window facing the blue ocean. And a cool gentle wind was coming in from the door. Clearly, he saw and felt none of it.
If we were at home, I would hand the phone over to him after five minutes of listening to this kind of moaning.
But not here. Before we left, I had told my 10yearold son the rule — we came here to get away from electronics(电子产品). So we came here without our electronics. Here we were on our first day and already, he couldn't stand it.
On the second day, we spent the whole morning digging for shells(贝壳). This time, my son joined us happily. He collected shellfish and other sea treasures. At noon, we had a big meal on the beach. My son was really excited to enjoy it. When we got back to our little wood house in the afternoon, I gave my son a book about the sea, and put him on the lovely garden chair. It was almost dinner when he looked up.
The next few days passed in peace.
On Day 6, my son was lying beside me on the beach, watching the sun going down. He was playing with the sand. And there was something shining in his eyes. I realized how time slowed down for both of us. It was exactly what I wanted. Finally, we were able to sit quietly without thinking about screens, phone calls and emails.
A week away from all the electronics is good.

We know about the advantages of eating fittingly for our physical health, but food, and cooking it, is proving to be good for our mental(心理的) health as well.
Some people are now supporting the treatment value of cooking food. It's not just about the end result but also the experience someone goes through. Dr. Mark Salter, a doctor, told the BBC: “Baking(烘焙) and cooking are good treatments. They help patients develop planning skills, shortterm memories and social skills.”
TV chef(大厨) and author Nadiya Hussain agrees that cooking is great for helping our mind. She loves to bake and became the champion of the TV show The Great British Bake Off. She thinks that baking is an important tool for mental health.
Certainly, creating some delicious food takes our mind off things and gives us something to do, helping us get through the recent sadness. People have said that mixing dough to make bread, for example, has given them a sense of calm and control. Research has shown that doing creative tasks, like cooking, makes us feel more comfortable. Nicole Farmer, who studies how food influences our biology, told BBC online that “Cooking represents the human experience of food, and growing people through food, so there is no doubt that it can bring us timely positive feelings.”
Of course, cooking can be a very sociable activity and sharing the end result, a rewarding experience. Hopefully, as we start to mix with friends and family again, we can put us all in the right state of mind.

I made my decision
I'm lucky to have such understanding parents. They often allow me to make my own decisions.
I still remember when I started my junior high school, my mother wanted me to take afterschool classes. But I thought I should develop my hobbies. Though we had different opinions, my mother agreed with me at last. In order to balance my schoolwork and hobbies, I made plans and followed them strictly. As a result, I got good scores in my exams. My hobbies didn't get in the way of my schoolwork. Instead, they helped me relax and study better. I was happy because I made a correct decision by myself.
As teenagers, we need more chances to learn to manage our own lives. Only by being trusted can we become independent gradually.
