Teaching goals:

1. 能够整体理解课文和复述课文主要内容，掌握一定的阅读技巧。

2. 能够较好地掌握和运用本课的重点单词、短语和句型。

3. 能够写一写Spud Webb为实现梦想永不放弃的历程。

Important and difficult points:

1. 掌握新单词和短语：junior high, try out for sth., lose heart, change one’s mind, leader, simply, national, championship, succeed in doing sth, although, force, take notice of, achievement, prove等。

2. 熟练运用新句型：

  While attending junior high, Spud tried out for the school team, but he was refused to play at first because he was too small.

  When he finally got the chance, he scored 20 points in his first game.

  As a result, he successed in getting a scholarship.

  Through hard work, Spud Webb proved that size and body type really doesn not matter— you can do almost anything if you never give up.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1  Warming up and lead-in

1.Show some pictures about basketball match .

  (1)Many people like playing basketball,what about you ?

  (2)Do you play basketball ?

  (3)Are you good at it ?

  (4)How often do you play it ?

  (5)Who’s your favourite basketball player ?

2.Show some picture of Yao Ming’s .

   This is  Yao Ming .How tall he is !He played in the NBA. Many People like him .What do you think makes a good basketball player ?

   (1) Does a basketball player need to practise a lot ?

   (2) Is it important for a basketball player to have team spirit ?

   (3) Basketball players are usually very tall ,aren’t they ?

 Step 2  Presentation

1. Ask students: Today we’re going to learn about another NBA player . He’s called Spud Webb .

2. Teacher says : What do you know about Spud Webb ?

             What do you think Spud Webb is like ?

3.Read the article about Spud Webb on pages 50 and 51 quickly.

4.Read the first parograph and answer the questions

      (1) When and where was Spud Webb born ?(In Texas in 1963)

      (2)What was his big dream ?(He wanted to play in the NBA)

Step 3 Activities

   1.Have students finish the exercises  B3 on page 53,then ask the two students to read the whole dialogue and check the answers.

   2.Have an interview .

   3. Have students finish the exercise B4 on page 53,then check the answers together .

Step 4 Homework

   1.Remember new words , phrases and sentences .

   2.Read and recite the text .

   3.Finish the exercise .
