There are usually few things people want to do less than housework. But while doing the dishes and cleaning the house seem like boring things, a new study has found just how important they are to our health and happiness.
In fact, scientists now believe cleaning the house is more important to mental and physical health than other things. Researchers at Case Western Reserve University say doing housework is helpful because of the exercise it takes to get the daily job done, which in turn influences mental health.
Dr. Kathy Wright and a research team at the university’s Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing wanted to find out how education, environment and health behaviors influence the elders’ health. The 337 persons taking part in the study, from 65 to 94 years old, had to have at least one chronic(慢性的)illness which prevented them from doing at least one basic daily task, such as bathing and dressing.
Dr. Wright said she was surprised to learn that doing housework influenced their mental and physical health more than other things, because a clean environment is helpful in treating some illnesses. The study proved what Dr. Wright has seen in her visits: people living in a dirty environment seemed less satisfied than those in a place that was neat and tidy. The study shows how important it is for the elders with chronic illnesses to do some housework. Dr. Wright hopes they will continue physical activities.
Now we know doing housework is so important to us, so there is no excuse not to do it. Let’s get it started right now.

Some people say that western festivals are getting more and more popular in China. As a result, Chinese traditional festivals are being neglected(忽视). The two stories below tell you what is going on with people’s favourite festival.
I moved to Shaoguan ten years ago, and my hometown is a small village in Hebei Province. When I was a child, the Spring Festival was the biggest event of a year. I loved this festival best because there was a lot of delicious food to eat. Now things are different. We celebrate not only Chinese festivals but also many western festivals like April Fool’s Day, Halloween and so on. The Spring Festival is still my favourite festival, but with so many festivals to celebrate now, it is not as special as it used to be.
Jack, Shaoguan
I am a 15-year-old student in Guangzhou. If you ask me what my favourite festival is, I think it is Christmas. In the school, most of my classmates get excited about this festival. Usually my friends and I would start to plan the activities two weeks before Christmas Day, and we may hold a party or sing songs together. This year there will be a band show in an outdoor square. We are all looking forward to it. Also we would prepare each other a Christmas card on that day. My parents can’t understand why Christmas is so popular among young people. I don’t know how to say. But my friends and I really have fun in it, and it is out of fashion if we don’t celebrate Christmas.
