I remember the day when I first learned to ride a bike. It was a frightening, yet fun experience. My grandfather was the one who taught me and he helped me when I got hurt. The first time I got on a bike, I had no idea what I was doing, and just about everything went wrong. My grandfather told me to just put my feet on the pedals(脚蹬子)and start cycling. He also told me he would hold onto the back of the bike the whole time, yet he didn't.

As soon as I started trying to balance myself, he let the bike go. I happened to look back just then. I was scared to death that I was going to fall and hurt myself. When I was scared, my mind went blank from cycling, and I just wanted off. I forgot how to use the brakes(车闸) and fell right off the bike. My grandfather kept encouraging me to get up and try again, and after about 15 minutes, I finally stopped crying, got up and tried again.

As soon as I started riding again, my pants got caught in the chain, and I fell flat on my face and hit my nose. My grandfather decided to call it a day and try again the next morning. The next morning I woke up brightly and early, and was very eager to try to ride my bike. My nose felt better, so I wasn't that afraid of falling any more.

Despite the fact that I knew there were a range of difficulties on the way to mastering the skills in riding a bike, I believed I could do well with my grandfather's help. After all, riding a bike was indeed what I wanted to do eagerly.

    A. It's never too late to learn.               B. Great minds think alike.

    C. Success relies on perseverance(毅力).     D. It's hard to see the bottom of the water.

    C

A typical school day in the UK starts around 8:30 a. m. This is often even earlier than elsewhere in the world, with students sitting down to their first lesson at 7:30 a. m. in the US. The average teenager properly needs eight to nine hours' sleep each night, but in fact a lot of teenagers struggle to get this much. A lot of problems happen because our sleep patterns are not fixed, and they change as we grow.

So a later school start time could help to solve this problem, by ensuring to get their eight plus hours of sleep and react properly to their body's natural rhythms(规律). There has been a general change over the past 25 years to shorten the school day. This is not at the cost of teaching time(which has remained constant)but at the cost of natural breaks, which has led to reduced lunch time and lesson breaks.

Later start times could help teens' grades and health. This is mainly because it makes the management of children easier. Managing hundreds of children "playing" requires effective staffing. And there is always the fear that behavior worsens during breaks. So the theory goes that having them in class and strictly supervised must be better.

But this means that students barely have enough time to absorb what they were doing in maths before suddenly they are forced to study ancient history. And teaching staff also move through from one class to another, with hardly a rest or time to refocus.

Clearly rethinking the school day could benefit everyone included. Anyway, it could also lead to better achievement in teenagers and less of a struggle for parents in the mornings.

    28. How many hours do average teenagers need to sleep at least every night?

    A. Eight.     B. Nine.     C. Eight to nine.      D. Nine to ten.

    29. What is the result of schools shortening the school day?

    A. Reducing lunch time and lesson breaks.     B. Changing children's natural rhythms.

    C. Reducing the teaching time.              D. Increasing more holidays.

    30. What does the underlined "supervised" mean in the third paragraph?

    A. Thought.     B. Blamed.      C. Managed.     D. Concerned.

    31. Where can you read the text?

    A. In a geography book.   B. On the Internet.   C. In a book review.   D. In a science fiction.

    D

Self-confidence(自信)is the answer to success, or we can say the most important step to success. If a person has confidence in himself, he has already won half the battle. Those people who seem to be self-confident at work, school, and also in their daily life constantly appear on top of the world in every given task. Everything seems to go correctly for these people and they always seem to present themselves as peaceful, calm and victorious in everything they do.

If you pay a little attention, you might become aware of that these self-confident people are generally successful in each area of their lives. Have you ever wondered "why"? That is because self-confident people realize the impact of believing in themselves and relying on their own abilities. They talk so confidently that they make you believe they are correct and make you agree with their point of view. A confident person seems to be more aware and educated even if he knows a little about the subject.

However, a person who is learned but lacking confidence might fail. This confidence finally creates opportunities for success and with each fresh success; another self-confident building block is to put into position. Success builds up your self-confidence with each new accomplishment. Self-confident people recognize themselves as able to attain those things they set out to do and this recognition creates reality in their lives.

    32. What's the main idea of the first paragraph?

    A. Self-confidence must lead to success.       B. Self-confidence is the key to success.

    C. Self-confidence is connected with luck.     D. Self-confidence has nothing to do with failure.

    33. Why will confident people be successful?

    A. They have good education.           B. They work hard in their lives.

    C. They have their own point of view.     D. They believe in their abilities and themselves.

    34. What will happen to a knowledgeable man losing confidence?

    A. He will fail in work and life.     B. He will keep on working hard.

    C. He will be exhausted.           D. He will blame society.

    35. What does the author tell us about at last?

    A. The relationship of success and confidence.     B. The effect on recognition and reality.

    C. The reason for success and chances.           D. The cause of success and confidence.

Brandon went to the pet store with his mom and his brothers, Isaiah and Matt. Isaiah needed food for his rabbit. Matt wanted a toy for his bird.

Brandon looked at a red-and-blue-striped fish while he waited. Air bubbled(冒泡)to the top of the fish tank. Brandon leaned close to the glass. Could he hear the bubbles pop(爆裂)?

"May I have a pet?" Brandon asked.

"You can't take care of a pet," Isaiah said. "You're too little."

"I'm almost seven," said Brandon. "I can take care of a pet."

"You won't be gentle with a pet," said Matt. "You're too little."

Mom smiled. "It's hard to keep a pet's cage neat."

Brandon stood tall. "I can be neat."

When they got home, Brandon went to the room he shared with Matt. Brandon's blocks were on the floor. Toy cars covered the top of his desk. Many books about fish were spread out on his bed. Brandon's pajamas(睡衣)hung from the back of his chair. "My side of the room is not neat," Brandon said.

He dropped his blocks into a bin. He parked the cars on his shelf. He put away the books, leaving One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish on the top. Brandon put his pajamas away. He smiled. He could be neat.

The doorbell rang. Brandon heard Uncle Jay say hello to Mom. He heard his baby cousin, Rubie, crying. "Hi, Uncle Jay," Brandon said. "Why is Rubie crying?"

"She's hungry, Brandon," Uncle Jay said.

"Can you get her baby bottle?"

Brandon found the bottle in Rubie's bag. Uncle Jay put Rubie on a blanket. Brandon sat in front of her. He hid his face with his hands. "Peekaboo(躲猫猫)," Brandon said, lowering his hands. Rubie stopped crying.

"You're very gentle," said Uncle Jay. "Do you want to feed Rubie?" Brandon nodded.
