Safety is the usual choice for global travelers when faced with a menu of unknown dishes. But a great meal crosses all cultural boundaries, and sharing the food of your host country is the best way to connect with its people and culture.
    Italy
Pizza is not a new thing for you. But locals say there’s something in the water in Naples that ensures you will never have a pizza like it anywhere else in the world. If you’re lucky enough to be around during the autumn truffle (松露) season, try uova con tartufi — fried eggs with truffle oil. It can’t be found on restaurant menus, but chefs from Tuscany and Umbria will know what you mean if you ask for it.
    Spain
If you’re anywhere in Spain, you must try Manchego. It has a strong flavor, and enjoying it along with bread, served with olives and meat or accompanied by red wine makes a perfect choice. Barcelona is part of Catalunya, a region in Spain that has a very special food culture. Must-haves include patatas bravas, crisp (脆的) fried potatoes with a secret sauce, and mel i mato, a curd cheese and honey dessert cooked in a pot. Even if you’re rushing on an overnight trip through Barcelona, don’t leave without trying them!
    Russia
The best meals are worth the money in Russia. If you see solyanka on the menu, don’t hesitate to order. This salty, sour and often spicy soup combined with meat or fish and topped with a Russian sour cream, is delicious. Borscht and pelmeni are common in Russia, but experiment with different varieties. If you find the time, a culinary (美食的) side trip in search of Azerbaijaini plov, a spiced rice dish cooked with meat and dried fruit, is worth the journey.

    21. If you are a cheese lover, you can choose __________.
    A. Manchego B. uova con tartufi
    C. solyanka D. mel i mato
    22. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. You must eat Manchego with red wine.
    B. The sweetness of water gives Naples’ pizza a special flavor.
    C. You may spend quite some money trying best food in Russia.
    D. Uova con tartufi is not allowed to be put on Italian restaurant menus.
    23. In which part of a magazine will you most likely read this passage?

Russ Fee was asleep inside his tent when screams awoke him. Throwing on his shoes, he ran out to look. Russ and his wife were travelling through Canada’s Banff National Park to enjoy its stunning beauty and awesome wildlife. It was the latter that he then encountered. Although it was dark, Russ could see a neighbouring tent. Backing out was a wolf, dragging something in his teeth. That thing was a man.
Moments earlier, Elisa and Matt Rispoli were asleep with their two young children when the wolf tore into their tent. “It was something out of a horror movie,” Elisa posted on Facebook. For 3 minutes, “Matt threw his body in front of me and the boys and fought the wolf.” At one point, Matt got the upper hand, pinning the wolf to the ground. But the wolf fixed its jaws onto Matt’s arm, and began pulling him outside.
It was then that Russ entered the picture. He ran at the beast, kicking it “like I was kicking in a door,” he told ABC New York. The wolf dropped Matt and came out from the tent. “I felt like I had hit someone that is way out of my weight class,” Russ added. Before the wolf could turn its anger on Russ, Matt, whose arms bloodied, flew out of the tent to continue the battle. The men threw rocks at the wolf, forcing it back, then the Fees and the Rispolis ran into the Fees’ minivan. An ambulance was called, and Matt was taken to a local hospital suffering bad injuries. He now has fully recovered. The wolf was tracked down by park officials and euthanized (实施安乐死).
As for Russ, whom Elisa called their guardian angel, he does admit to a fleeting (转瞬即逝的) thought, if less-than-heroic, during the heat of battle. The moment the wolf locked eyes with him, “ I immediately regretted kicking it.”
    24. When did Russ join the fight?
    A. When he saw a wolf pulling a man.
    B. When he saw a wolf tearing into a tent.
    C. When Matt pinned the wolf to the ground.
    D. When Matt threw his body in front of his wife.
    25. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?
    A. The wolf was out of Russ’ way.
    B. Russ once hit someone very huge.
    C. The wolf was far heavier than Russ.
    D. Russ wanted to beat the wolf to death.
    26. Which word can describe Elisa in the story?
    A. Careful B. Protective.
    C. Thoughtful. D. Appreciative.
    27. What is the best title for the passage?
    A. A Narrow Escape. B. Wolves in Banff.
    C. Two Lucky Families. D. An Exciting Adventure.

    C
A handshake is one of the most common ways to greet others, but former US President Donald Trump’s unusual method has been put under the microscope.
Much like an arm wrestler in a match, this state leader has a habit of yanking (猛拽) people’s hands towards himself during handshakes. And while a typical handshake is only brief, the one between him and the then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2019 lasted a full 19 seconds.
Simply having a strong hand is not the explanation here. According to Darren Stanton, a body language expert from the UK, while handshakes are usually an exchange of kindness, Trump uses his as a way to show power and control, regardless of how uncomfortable it makes people. “It is as if to say, ‘Hey, I’m in charge, don’t mess with me,’” Stanton told The Independent.
Apart from Trump’s “yank-shake”, there are other ways people display power with their hands. At business talks or political meetings, for instance, some people may rotate (转动) their wrist during handshakes so that their hand ends up on top instead of underneath. Some may squeeze so hard that it leaves the other person’s hand in pain.
According to Stanton, by pulling people into his personal space, Trump is also testing whether they are willing to cooperate with him. “For example, if someone resisted being yanked towards him and stood their ground, he would know that he had work to do with them before he got what he wanted,” Stanton told The Independent.
This is probably why when Canadian prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the White House, all eyes were on how he was going to handle Trump’s handshake.
Fortunately, Trudeau managed to avoid the embarrassment by grabbing Trump’s shoulder to stop himself being pulled in. Afterwards, some twitter users wrote this proved Trudeau’s strong leadership, with one even calling the moment “one of Canada’s victories”. Vice Magazine summed up: “...no regular handshake. This was the first shot in a bloodless war.”

    28. Why did Trump shake hands with Shinzo Abe for 19 seconds?
    A. To make people uncomfortable.
    B. To show his power and control.
    C. To treat the visitor with friendliness.
    D. To impress the other with an unusual gesture.
    29. How is Paragraph 4 mainly developed?
    A. By listing figures. B. By presenting causes.
    C. By providing examples. D. By making comparisons.
    30. Justin Trudeau’s reaction to Trump’s handshake ___________.
    A. proved his leadership
    B. declared war on America
    C. annoyed American citizens
    D. brought him criticism and praise
    31. What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. Trump has a very strong personality.
    B. Trump shows power through greetings.
    C. Handshakes display power and control.
    D. Body language reveals one’s characters.

The holidays are officially over, and while the vacation time could mean different things to people — catching up on competitive sports, eating amounts of food, or finally visiting your uncle — one thing is almost universal: the sentiment of “oh no, I have to go to work again.”
It’s easy to understand why we get a little depressed at the thought of coming back to everyday life. The post-vacation blues, the depression after the holiday, can have actual health effects. A journalist and travel writer Nneka Okona says, “For me, the dejection (沮丧) starts around the last 24 hours of a trip. I feel really down and sometimes even teary.”
But if vacations are supposed to be a significant boon to our happiness and well-being, why do we break down afterwards?
Jeroen Nawijn, a psychologist at the Breda University, says that though people generally become happier on their days off, those benefits weaken quickly after returning home. “They most likely feel best during vacation because they have more freedom to do what they want.” he explains.
Suzanne Degges-White, a therapist, echoes this sentiment. “Once we get back into the work world, the majority of us have to deal with piles of work,” she says. She also indicates the difficulty of rejoining the work life lies in the fact that duties don’t disappear when we go on vacation. “They know that problems may have stacked up in their absence. ” Degges-White adds.
Thankfully, there are ways to ease the sentimental blues. “Thinking ahead could also include making a to-do list for your first week back, keeping your work and living spaces clean and organized for your return.” Degges-White says.
One more tip: start planning your next vacation right away. “The only thing that has continually worked for me is booking another trip as quickly as possible.” Okona says, “My blues are disappearing if I know I have something else to look forward to.” She also recommends grabbing a useful rather than decorative souvenir(纪念品) so that you have something to tie your new experiences with your life back home.
Prepare you better for the reality that awaits post-vacation. And if all else fails, you can always try working your memories to trick yourself into happiness ever after.

    32. Thinking of returning to work, most people will ________.
    A. do sports and eat delicious food
    B. use the remaining time to visits their relatives
    C. feel down especially when their vacation is about to be over
    D. deal with the harmful effects on health caused by depression
    33. Which of the following can best describe the underlined word in Paragraph 3?
    A. Something helpful. B. Something beautiful.
    C. Something memorable. D. Something unforgettable.
    34. What can we infer according to the passage?
    A. Jeroen Nawijn and Degges-White differ about post-vacation blues.
    B. Degges-White thinks post-vacation blues result from piles of work.
    C. Jeroen Nawijn suggests giving people more freedom when they work.
    D. Okona would choose a painting rather than local snacks as a souvenir.
    35. What is the author’s opinion about dealing with post-vacation blues?
    A. Happiness can’t be achieved.
    B. Another vacation is the best way.
    C. People should focus on their work.
    D. If you will, some way can be found.

    小作文
    Dear Harvey,
Delighted and eager, I am writing this letter with the purpose of introducing my hometown to you, which is now making every effort to develop its tourism.
Located in the southwest of China where two rivers meet, my hometown is well-celebrated for the spectacular views as well as local culture. The charm of the city lies in its mountainous landscape, which gives rise to a variety of buildings, overpasses, river-crossing bridges and tunnels. A unique type of residential houses, the stilt-house, dating back to hundreds of years ago, can still be traced in the city. When night falls, seen from the top of the South Mountain, the night view of the hilly city is a true feast for the eyes. In short, my hometown is well worth a visit.
I sincerely invite you to my hometown at your convenience.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
