过去完成时表示在过去某一时间或动作之前已经发生或完成了的动作或状态。  它表示句子中描述的动作发生在“过去的过去”。 I had finished reading the nvel by nine 'clck last night. 
1. 明显的时间标志词：By,  by the time (f )/ by the end f + 过去时间, up till then (直到时)，when/ befre/ after…….+过去时间, up until last night(直到昨晚）        By nine ’clck last night, we had already gt 200 pictures frm the spaceship.
2. 根据上、下文来判定： I met Wang Ta in the street yesterday. We hadn't seen each ther since he went t Beijing.  
主+had+dne（过去分词）
By the time he was twelve, Edisn had begun t make a living by himself.We had learnt 30 lessns by the end f last mnth.He said we hadn’t seen each ther since I left Beijing.
  动词原形变为过去分词的规则

主语+had+dne：had为助动词
一般疑问句： had提到句首.否定句： 在had后加ntShe had eaten an apple befre she slept. （改为一般疑问句和否定句）
She hadn’t eaten an apple befre she slept. （否定句）
Had she eaten an apple befre she slept?（一般疑问句）
表示在过去某一时刻或动作以前完成了的动作，即“过去的过去”。（时间标志词）Befre I gt t the bus stp, the bus had already left.By the time I walked int class, the teacher had started teaching already.
2.表示动作在过去某一时间之前开始，一直延续到过去的这一时间， 而且还可能继续下去的动作， 常和fr, since构成的短语或引导的从句连用。The news came as n surprise t me. I had knwn fr sme time that the factry was ging t shut dwn. After I left schl, he had taught the class fr 3 years. He said he had made great prgress since he came here.
3. 用在 “It was the first/secnd/third…time that…”句型中，在此句型中，主句用了一般过去时，that引导的定语从句要用过去完成时.This was the first time they had met in thirty-nine years. It was the first time we had spken tgether.
4.在含有定语从句的主从复合句中，如果叙述的是过去的事，先发生的动作常用过去完成时。I returned the bk that I had brrwed.  She fund the key that she had lst.    
5.过去完成时常常用在tld, said, knew, heard, thught等动词后的宾语从句（或间接引语）中，这时从句中的动作发生在主句表示的过去的动作之前。 He said that he had knwn her well.    I thught I had sent the letter a week befre. 
6.表示意向的动词，如hpe, wish, expect, think, intend, mean, suppse等，用过去完成时表示“原本…，未能…”。We had hped that yu wuld cme, but yu didn't. They had wanted t help but culd nt get there in time.
