① 过去进时表示过去某个时刻正在进行的动作。 常与表示过去的时间状语 ( at this/that time yesterday, at tw yesterday, at frm ne t fur last Sunday )等连用。如：
I was taking a shwer at this time yesterday. 昨天这个时候我在洗澡。
What were yu ding at 8:30 this mrning ? 今天早上八点半你在干什么？
When I called him, he was having dinner. 当我给他打电话的时候，他正在吃晚饭。
② 过去进行时表示过去某段时间内正在进行的动作。如：
What were yu ding frm seven t nine yesterday ? 昨天从七点到九点你在干什么 ？

3、过去进行时与一般过去时的比较：
① 在与 last night, all day yesterday, all the time, the whle mrning, frm tw t fur 等表示过去的时间段状语连用时，用过去进行时强调动作进行的过程，用一般过去时只是单纯说明动作完成的事实。如：
I was wrking all day yesterday. 我昨天全天都在学习。（过去进行时，强调过程）
I wrked all day yesterday. 我昨天全天都学习了。（一般过去时，说明事实）
I was writing sme letters last night. 我昨晚在写信。（过去进行时）
I wrte sme letters last night. 我昨晚写了几封信。（一般过去时）
② 在叙述或描写过去的事情时，过去进行经常与其他过去时态，特别是一般过去时连用。但是过去进行时往往用来表示事情发生的背景。如：
It was ten ’clck, when I gt t the schl. The students were studying. The teacher was standing near the dr.十点钟，我到达了学校。同学们都在学习。老师站在门附近。
when, while &as
while, when and as 都表示“当…的时候”
这三个连词都可引导时间状语从句，但用法有所不同。

过去进行时与一般过去时的区别1. 过去进行时着重描述当时正在进行的动作，它的特点是：未完成，强调过程；2. 一般过去时表示一个已经完成的动作，表示动作发生过，而且已经结束了，强调结果。

【解析】was making表示正在做衣服的过程，如用made则表示这一动作已结束，做衣服的动作已结束与cut her finger就没有联系。

【解析】wrte表示动作已结束，做另一件事，如用 was writing就与went t bed在逻辑上相矛盾。
过去进行时与一般过去时的区别1. 过去进行时侧重表示动作的延续；2. 一般过去时表示过去某时发生过某事.

注：下列几类动词通常不用于进行时。 ① 表示状态的动词be② 感官动词：feel, hear, sund, lk, smell, taste等 ③ 表示思维或心理状态的动词：believe, frget, cnsider(认为), knw, remember, hpe, wish, want等
④ 表示所属关系的动词: belng, have, wn, hld（容纳）等
