Perid 2: A lessn plan fr Learning abut Language
(The Restrictive and Nn-Restrictive Attributive Clause)
    Aims:
T learn abut the restrictive and nn-restrictive attributive clause
T discver sme useful wrds and expressins
    T discver sme useful structures
    Prcedures:
    I. Warming up
Warming up by discvering useful wrds and expressins
Please turn t page 3. D exercises 1, 2, 3 and 4 first. Please check yur answers against yur classmates’.
    Warming up by explaining
Nw, class, since yu’ve read the passage, culd yu explain t me hw t use the phrase “belng t”? The wrd “t” here is a prepsitin, indicating the pssessin, and is always fllwed by nuns r prnun. Lk at Ex 3. The prepsitin “at” indicates a state, cnditin r cntinuus activity. S we can replace them r express them by using a present-cntinuus tense.
    II. Learning abut Attributive Clause
    1. What is an adjective Clause?
An adjective clause is a dependent clause which takes the place f an adjective in anther clause r phrase. Like an adjective, an adjective clause mdifies a nun r prnun, answering questins like “which?” r “what kind f?” Cnsider the fllwing examples:
    Adjective
    the red cat
    Adjective clause
the cat which I bught yesterday
Like the wrd “red” in the first example, the dependent clause “which I bught yesterday” in the secnd example mdifies the nun “cat.” Nte that an adjective clause usually cmes after what it mdifies, while an adjective usually cmes befre.
In frmal writing, an adjective clause begins with the relative prnuns “wh(m),” “that,” r “which.” In infrmal writing r speech, yu may leave ut the relative prnun when it is nt the subject f the adjective clause, but yu shuld usually include the relative prnun in frmal, academic writing:
    infrmal
The bks peple read were mainly religius.
    frmal
The bks that peple read were mainly religius.
    infrmal
Sme firefighters never meet the peple they save.
    frmal
Sme firefighters never meet the peple whm they save.
Here are sme mre examples f adjective clauses:
the meat which they ate was tainted
This clause mdifies the nun “meat” and answers the questin “which meat?”.
They’re talking abut the mvie which made him cry
This clause mdifies the nun “mvie” and answers the questin “which mvie?”.
They are searching fr the student wh brrwed the bk
The clause mdifies the prnun “student” and answers the questin “which student?”.
Did I tell yu abut the authr whm I met?
The clause mdifies the nun “authr” and answers the questin “which authr?”.
    2. Restrictive & nn restrictive clauses
D the fllwing pairs f sentences mean the same thing?
1a My uncle, wh lives in Lndn, is very rich.
2b My uncle wh lives in Lndn is very rich.
2a The plicies, which were unppular, were rejected by the vters.
2b The plicies which were unppular were rejected by the vters.
3a My niece, whse husband is ut f wrk, will inherit the huse, which I have always treasured.
3b My niece whse husband is ut f wrk will inherit the huse which I have always treasured.
The first sentence in each pair has a nn-restrictive clause within tw cmmas, and the secnd has a restrictive clause. A nn-restrictive clause simply adds mre infrmatin int the sentence and des nt affect the meaning f the main clause: it is therefre bracketed ff with cmmas (1a = an uncle wh happens t live in Lndn). Cnversely, a restrictive clause defines its referent in the main clause mre specifically and cntributes significantly t the meaning f the sentence. Thus it is that particular uncle wh lives in Lndn wh is referred t (1b). In 2a, all plicies were unppular and all were rejected, whereas in 2b nly the plicies that were unppular were rejected. Nte that in restrictive clauses the nn-human relative prnun is either ‘that’ r ‘which’, whereas fr human referents the relative prnun can be either ‘wh/m’ r ‘that’ (the man that/whm I will marry ).
