Why are s many peple s afraid f failure? Quite simply, because n ne tells us hw t fail s that failure becmes an experience that will lead t grwth. We frget that failure is part f the human cnditin and that every persn had the right t fail.
Mst parents wrk hard at preventing failure r prtecting their children frm the knwledge that they have failed. One way is t lwer standards. A mther describes her child’s hastily made table as “perfect” even thugh it desn’t stand still. Anther way is t shift blame. If Jhn fails science, his teacher is unfair r stupid.
The truble with failure-preventin devices is that they leave a child unequipped fr life in the real wrld. The yung need t learn that n ne can be best at everything. N ne can win all the time---and that it’s pssible t enjy a game even when yu dn’t win. A child wh’s nt invited t a birthday party, wh desn’t make the hnr list n the baseball team, feels terrible, f curse, but parents shuld nt ffer a quick cnslatin prize(安慰奖) r say, “It desn’t matter.” Because it des. The yung shuld be allwed t experience disappintment---and be helped t master it.
Failure is never pleasurable. It hurts grwn-ups and children alike. But it can make a psitive cntributin t yur life nce yu learn t use it. Step ne is t ask “why did I fail?” Dn’t blame smene else. Ask yurself what yu did wrng, hw yu can imprve. If smene else can help, dn’t be shy abut inquiring.
Success, which encurages repetitin f ld behavir, is nt nearly as gd a teacher as failure. Yu can learn frm a bad party hw t give a secnd ne, frm an ill—chsen first huse what t lk fr in a secnd. Even a failure that seems definitive can prmpt(激起) fresh thinking, a change f directin. After 12 years f studying ballet a friend f mine auditined(面试) fr a prfessinal cmpany. She was turned dwn. “wuld further training help?” she asked. The ballet master shk his head. “Yu will never be a dancer,” he said, “yu haven’t the bdy fr it.”
In such cases, the way t use failure is t take stck(鉴定) bravely and ask, “What have I left? What else can I d?” My friend put away her shes and mved int dance treatment center, a field where she’s bth able and useful. Failure frees ne t take risks because there’s less t lse. Often there is recvery f energy—a way t find new pssibilities.

B. the reasn why we dn’t knw hw t fail

49. What can make a psitive cntributin t ne’s life nce he learns t use it?
