Yu are standing in a hall packed with friends, family, clleagues and peers. Yu are abut t walk nt the stage and address theme. Yu’re expected t say smething meaningful and prfund and everyne is hanging n yur every wrd. Yu need t be clearly spken, cnfident and calm, maybe even funny. Hw d yu feel?
If yu’re shaking, sweating and lking fr the exit, yu’re nrmal. Mst f us are scared f public speaking and yet, as a sciety, we’re becming mre bsessed with hearing what peple have t say: we watch endless TED talks, dwnlad pdcasts and screen hurs f YuTube clips. Being able t address a crwd is n lnger the dmain f the brave----if yu want t get ahead in yur career, yu need t master it. I’ve dne enugh public speaking t have picked up sme tips and tricks, and these are the nes I rely n mst.
The mst imprtant thing is t prepare. Yu dn’t have t write ut yur speech wrd by wrd but get the headline, three key pints and the cncluding sentence n paper and put bullet pints under each. Then run thrugh it and nte which f yur bullet pints made it in and what yu added. Adapt yur ntes and try again. Keep ging until yu have a structure.
Nw it’s time t watch yurself----yes, get ut yur camera and film yurself. This is hw yu will see the pints that need wrk and where yu can plish it up.
Mst f the infrmatin the audience will take away will be frm yur energy and yur tne, a little frm yur wrds. Once yu have srted ut the wrds, fcus n hw t exude(散发) the right energy---d yu need cnfidence r humr? I g fr cnfidence s, five minutes befre a talk, I try t recall a success I’ve had. I fcus n the details and aim t bring that feelings f cmpetence t life.
Finally, breathe, We cannt speak withut breath, yet it is the first thing we let g f when we are nervus. Settle yur breathing befre yu start. If yu lse cntrl f yur breath in the middle, say “Let’s take a mment t think abut that last pint.” That gives yu a pause t cllect yur breath. The nly way t get ver a fear f public speaking is t d it, again and again. Yu will have gd and bad experiences but, if yu d it enugh, yu’ll realize that, ccasinally, it’s fun.

C.
Thrwing handfuls f bread t birds has lng been seen as harmless enugh. But in recent years, sme scientists have suggested that bread might nt d birds’ digestive systems any gd, saying that as uneaten fd rts dwn, the water quality wrsens and algal blms can ccur. Plus, by encuraging birds t gather in ne place, the build-up f drppings may result in utbreaks f disease t. Meanwhile, many cities have signs telling us nt t feed pigens and gulls, which are cnsidered an “annyance” due t the mess they make, and scattering bread inevitably attracts rats and mice.
It seems that the public has accepted these warnings, and that fewer f us nw feed birds this way. In Octber, a sign went up in a Derbyshire park claiming that the lcal birds were dying f starvatin, and urging visitrs t feed them as befre. When nline psts abut the ntice went viral, feathers flew as peple debated the benefits f handing ut bread t birds.
Paul Stancliffe f the British Trust fr Ornithlgy(BTO) pints ut that there’s insufficient scientific evidence fr bread harming birds, adding that, as little research has been dne, it culd even turn ut t be beneficial. ① “We just dn’t knw,” he says. Althugh bread is a heavily prcessed “unnatural” fd intended fr humans, that alne may be insufficient grunds fr nt feeding it t birds.
In the 1980s, the Wildfwl & Wetland Trust (WWT) carried ut a cmparative study f different flcks f mute swans, and the birds that cnsumed the mst bread had weaker muscles, implying that a bread-heavy diet might be the cause. “Our fficial line is that bread is kay fr ducks, geese and swans, but nly in mderatin,” says WWT’s Peter Mrris. “Hwever, this advice cmes with several ther warnings.” ② The first is that it’s best ffered in winter, when there is less plant and insect fd arund.d In spring and summer, t much artificial fd may nt be a gd idea, since yung birds have t learn hw t lk after themselves and natural fd will cntain a wider range f nutrients t help them grw.
“Just like us, birds need a varied diet t stay healthy,” says a spkespersn fr the Ryal Sciety fr the Prtectin f Birds(RSPB). “Althugh ducks, geese and swans can digest all types f bread, t much can leave them feeling full withut giving them all f the imprtant vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need.” ③
When bird feeding first became ppular in the UK in the 19th century, sme Victrians encuraged tugh lve, arguing that such handuts wuld nly make ur feathered friends lazy and dependent n welfare. = 4 \* GB3 \* MERGEFORMAT ④ Mrris says that there is a thery that wild birds can get “hked” n easy meals, lsing interest in ther types f fd. Anther danger, he says, is that birds fed regularly end up accustmed t humans, placing themselves at greater risk f predatin(捕食).
Hw can feeding birds with bread affect ur urban life?
Birds’ mess can attract many rats and mice.
Birds’ gathering in ne place disturbs ur peace.
Bread ges bad and the water quality will suffer.
Human beings are likely t be infected with bird flu.
If birds rely n a bread-heavy diet, there is a strng pssibility that ______.
they will becme bigger in size with strnger muscles
lack f certain nutrients negatively influences their health
their digestive system will be damaged by artificial fd
they wuld sn chse bread rather than natural fd.
Where des the sentence “Such mralizing sunds ld-fashined nwadays, but may have a grain f truth.” best suit?
① B. ② C. ③ D. = 4 \* GB3 \* MERGEFORMAT ④
What is the best title fr this passage?
Is feeding birds a wise chice? B. Why nt feed ur bird neighburs?
C.Can we treat birds as friends? D . When d birds need ur fd aid?
D.
Despite all the ways we have t interact with thers, peple still feel islated and lne. Lneliness is an increasing prblem----s much s that, last year, the gvernment intrduced a lneliness strategy and minister fr lneliness. We used t talk f the cnditin in relatin t lder peple but rarely gender. It may cme as a surprise then that s many f thse affected by lneliness are men.
A recent YuGv survey fr Mvember, a charity event that raises awareness f men’s health issues, asked men abut their friendships and whether they had peple utside their hmes they culd swap their wrries with. Half f men asked said they had tw r fewer friends and ne in eight had nne---that’s 2.5 millin men with n clse friends. Even wrse, men’s friendlessness dubles between their early 20s and late middle age.
Islatin can have physical and mental health implicatins. A 2017 reprt by the Cmmissin n Lneliness said lneliness is as harmful t health as smking 15 cigarettes a day. Research shws crrelatin between lneliness and heart disease and strkes, and ther studies assciate lneliness with depressin. Hwever, why are s many men affected? In ur latest pdcast, psychtherapist Nel Bell says sme men feel they have t be self-reliant. Due t widespread scial steretypes (刻板印象), it can be viewed as a sign f weakness fr men t admit they have a prblem, express their deepest feelings r discuss a serius persnal tpic.
Perhaps due t the way generatins f men have been raised, it is ften difficult t recgnize feelings f lneliness in the first place. Behaviural differences between bys and girls are nt naturally brn at birth, they are scialised. Girls are steretypically seen as mre emtinal and talkative and s their cmmunicative and expressive skills are mre valued than thse f bys by parents and teachers, accrding t researchers.
Fr sme men, having a partner and a family can smewhat shelter them frm the negative effects f lneliness---but what if their persnal circumstances change? After a relatinship breaks dwn r there is a lss f yu belved, sme men find their friends have drifted away and they have n ne t talk t. Scial media can be beneficial if it leads t interactin in the real wrld, but nline netwrks are n substitute fr face-t-face friendships---the number f likes n yur mst recent pst des nt cmpare with genuine cnnectin.
Scial activities such as team sprts aren’t fr everyne and, if yu’re already feeling lnely r islated, it can be difficult t build the cnfidence t enter thse envirnments and cnnect ver a shared interest. There is als the danger that sme male-dminated scial envirnments encurage drinking alchl and may nt be the right places fr thse wh are feeling the mental health effects f islatin. That said, “shulder t shulder’ active interactins fr men, such as exercise, especially running, are prven t be beneficial. But such activities d nt interest all men and this is where psychtherapy(心理疗法) can be f particular use.
Dn’t suffer in silence. A psychtherapist is nt a friend, nr is therapy a substitute fr a meaningful friendship. A therapist will, hwever, help a client identify what may be creating barriers t them building supprtive friendships and determine the factrs that may be causing their feelings f islatin. A therapist will wrk with the client t address their issues, prviding a fair, nn-judgemental space in which a lnely persn can wrk ut what is best fr them and hw t mve twards a mre cnn3ected and cntented life. Bell, a famus therapist, says t many men enter therapy nly when a situatin has reached crisis pint and he encurages men nt t bttle up their emtins. “Reflecting n yur feelings is healthy and nrmal,” he says.
Wh used t be the prime victims f lneliness?
Junir students. B. Islated ministers.
C.Mature men. D. Senir citizens.
66. What des the survey dne by YuGv imply?
A. Men tend t expand their scial circle after their adlescence.
B. Yung and middle-aged male adults suffer mre frm lneliness.
C. Lneliness remains at the same level despite different ages.
D. Deep friendships are difficult t maintain between the males.
67. Accrding t the Nbel Bell, men’s lneliness is relevant t _______.
A. the fear f dying f heart disease and strkes
B. the depressin ppular amng men f all ages
C. the cnventinal view n hw men shuld behave
D. their reliance n utside assistance thrugh hardships
68. In terms f scial steretypes, girls are better at _______.
A. gaining sympathy frm men B. hiding their true emtins
C. disciplining their wn behavir D. interacting with ther peple

A. T stress the imprtance f real interactin t men.
B. T intrduce a pssible way ut f lneliness fr men.

D. T illustrate hw scial media can relieve depressin.

This is a stranger truth that anyne lder than 25 will already knw: as life ges n, time seems t speed up. Think back t childhd when hlidays seemed t last frever and yu attended a schl fr what felt like decades. Nw cnsider last year, by cntrast, and it prbably raced by. As thse in their 30s and 40s will knw, the effect gets wrse with age---and, fr peple in their 70s, a year can flash by in what seems like days. “Where did the time g?” we wnder.
One study fund that if yu’re 40, assuming yu live t be 80, yur life, in terms f yur subjective experience f time, is already 70 percent gne. It’s all rather terrifying. Frtunately, thugh, yu have the pwer t change things.
The best explanatin is that memries seem lnger when ur brains have t prcess mre infrmatin. Childhd and yung adulthd are full f nvelty---the first time yu rde a bike, had a rmance, g jb---but, as we get lder, things get mre rutine. Yu can test this ut by recalling a recent experience f nvelty in yur life, such as travel. A few years back, I went skiing fr the first time, and that fur-day trip still feels “lng”. But a fur-day perid in my rdinary life zms by t quickly fr me t ntice.
One slutin, then, is bvius: d lts f new stuff. Travel mre, if yu can, and t unfamiliar places. Try new hbbies and meet new peple---yu’ll be taxing yur brain, and the result will be a life that feels lnger, mre expansive and meaningful. But smaller changes wrk, t: even altering the rute yu take t the ffice, reading different kinds f nvels r varying where yu buy yur sandwich at lunchtime will have sme impact.
But nvelty can nly g s far. Besides, a fulfilling life requires rutine: yu can’t build deep relatinships, r rise thrugh the ranks at wrk if yu’re always switching friends r jbs r even spuses. That’s why the Buddhist teacher Shinzen Yung suggests an additinal strategy: learn t meditate(冥想). Even a few minutes a day will enhance yur cncentratin, and the better yu get at cncentrating, the mre infrmatin yur brain will take in during any experience, n matter hw bring.
Yu’ll be making yur whle life a little mre nvel. Yu’ll be mre present and time will pass less quickly; in effect, yu’ll extend yur life----withut magic pills r grundbreaking medical technlgy.

Zhang Lifeng, a 43-year-ld parent, welcmed the mve. “The regulatin shuld have cme earlier,” she said. “It will benefit bth teachers and students as well as parents.”
Hwever, a ninth grader at a middle schl, disagreed. “It is nrmal fr adlescent students t make mistakes. I dn’t think punishments are necessary. They may cause mre truble,” he said.
Chen Xianzhe, a prfessr with the Schl f Educatin at Suth China Nrmal University, said punishments are just a part f the teaching prcess.

Accrding t a new regulatin issued by China’s Ministry f Educatin, teachers have the right t discipline students wh break schl rules, which, hwever, has generated a lt f discussin.
Frm my perspective, the significance f schl discipline cannt be stressed t much. Fr ne thing, the regulatin will help students better understand the cnsequences f misbehaving, which is f great benefit t their healthy grwth and develpment. Fr anther, the regulatin can delegate mre pwer t teachers, wh shulder pressure in dealing with misbehaving students.
In rder fr the regulatin t be cnducted effectively, many jint effrts need t be made. First f all, authrities and schls shuld set up specific and reasnable rules fr schl discipline. Secndly, teachers ught t understand the rules thrughly t emply them prperly instead f abusing them. Mre imprtantly, parents are suppsed t cperate with teachers t reach a cnsensus n the level f punishments.
