本诗为无韵脚诗,此类诗歌不强调行尾韵脚,无需考虑押韵的问题,且每行长短有别,其节拍性不如有韵脚诗那么强。但是它并非毫无节奏,它往往通过相同的语句结构和反复重复的元、辅音发音进行弥补,令人读来别有一番情趣。在本诗中,我们读到大量的When…, I shuld be allwed t …和I…语句,我们耳畔不停想起“I”音和“s(z)”音。这些语句结构和语音特点衬托出诗歌的复现性特征,加之各行自身的语句重音,体现了节奏感,弥补了失缺韵脚的不足。
在书写上,英文诗歌并非完全以句断行,这在有韵脚诗文中更为突出。无论一行结句与否,移行后另行首字母均应大写。另外,与中文习惯不同,英文诗歌作者署名一般标注于诗文结束,另行靠右侧书写,而非直接书于标题之下。
