Every student learns that Christpher Clumbus discvered America in 1492. But nine hundred years earlier, an Irishman called St. Brendan described a vyage (航行) in a tiny bat. After a difficult trip, he came t a strange land that is nw believed t be America. Many peple think the stry is a fairy tale (童话). Hwever, the sailr Tim Severin believed it might be true. Hw wuld he prve it? By repeating Brendan’s vyage himself.

The research tk fur years, and building the bat tk fur mnths. Nt surprisingly, he called the bat the Brendan. It was nly 11 metres lng. The first time Severin sailed in the Brendan, he wndered if they wuld really be able t crss the Atlantic.
In May 1976, Severin and fur thers set sail frm Ireland. Fr tw weeks, Severin felt seasick. Besides, the leather smelled terrible, and they were always wet. Smetimes, they had t sail in the ppsite directin because the wind was blwing the wrng way. Still, they went n thrugh the Scttish islands. Like Brendan the sailr, they saw many whales. The whales shwed interest in the little skin bat, and ften came t lk at it.
Next they arrived in Iceland. In his stry, Brendan describes an island where unfriendly peple threw burning rcks at him. Perhaps this was Iceland, where vlcanes thrw fire and ht rcks int the sea. Leaving Iceland, the Brendan faced a terrible strm. Luckily, they survived.
Like Brendan the sailr, they ran int fg (雾) as they passed Greenland. When the fg lifted, Severin saw icebergs. This meant they were clse t Newfundland, Canada. Their jurney was almst ver! Hwever, the wrst was yet t cme. One day, the Brendan hit ice and water began t g int the bat. They tried their best t keep the bat abve the surface. Luckily, they were able t fix the hle with a piece f leather.
On June 26, 1977, the Brendan reached Canada. They had made it! S did this mean an Irishman had reached the New Wrld 1,500 years ag? Perhaps. But withut dubt, Tim Severin had made ne f the greatest sailing trips f the 20th century.
