Barcelona's opera house has celebrated its reopening to the public since the novel coronavirus pandemic (新冠疫情) put the world into a huge horror, but their opening night had an unusual audience. For its first concert, the theater refused the usual crowd of people and instead packed the house with plants. Yes, that's correct. All 2,292 seats at the Gran Teatre del Liceu were occupied by leafy green plants.
The idea was put forward by conceptual artist Eugeno Ampudia and the concert was broadcast live on the theater's website. These lucky ficus trees, palms, and Swiss cheese plants—which were brought in by local nurseries (苗圃)—got the pleasure of hearing Puccini's Crisantemi performed by the UceLi Quartet string musical group.
Ampudia hopes that his idea and the work will inspire people to think more deeply about their relationship with nature and the concept of sustainability “We are at the end of an era and that means that we have to change certain patterns,” he shares. “We don't live in the same world as 90 days ago, and this means we have to reflect on everything that we do.”
As plants can respond to different vibrations (震动) caused by music, they certainly weren't a passive audience—even if they weren't able to give applause. Now that the concert is over, each plant will be given to a different frontline health care worker who helped guide the country through its battle with the coronavirus.
The moving concert is a continuation of the Liceu's mission to create a dialogue between music and the visual arts. Pictures and a video of the performance taken by Ampudia will now become part of La Caixa's contemporary (当代的) art collection.

Each May since 1956 people from across Europe and around the world have gathered around their televisions with friends and family for an evening of international entertainment(娱乐):the Eurovision Song Contest. It may well be a fun event but perhaps it's not the shared celebration of the European language that it could be. In the first ten years of Eurovision, the UK and Ireland were the only two countries to sing in English. Now English is what we expect. Is it that English is becoming, or has become the official language of music?
From high streets in Hungary to supermarkets in Sweden, from bus stops in Bulgaria to parks in Poland, people listen to English-language music everywhere. And people don't just listen, they sing it too! From sporting events in Spain to nightclubs in Norway, from concerts in Croatia to fitness classes in France, people sing along to popular songs in their everyday lives, in English. But why?
For one evening each year, Eurovision is the dinner party of Europe. It is a dinner party to which each guest brings something special. Their clothing, tradition and food show their culture and their language shows the character of a nation. Although there are 50 nations with 83 languages, for Eurovision, English is the only language. Does Eurovision really represent Europe?
English is an international language spoken by over 1 billion people worldwide. It is no surprise that so many musicians make music in English. Of course, music makes money and more listeners make more money. According to Ragnar, lead singer of the Icelandic indie band “Of Monsters and Men”, English is simpler and is easier to make rhythms(节奏). Could this be true?
Let's remember that although English-language music is everywhere, music is not everything. As long as we continue to learn, to speak,to love, diversity(多样性)shall be valued. After all, what fun is a dinner party if the guests can't communicate(交流) or express themselves in the way they choose?
4.What do we know about Eurovision?
A.Singers sing English songs.
B.It helps protect European cultures.
C.It is the most popular contest in the world.

A.It is easy and beautiful.
B.It should be used in all music.
C.It is the best language in the world.
D.It helps musicians make money easily.
7.What is mainly discussed in the text?
A.Why we should protect language diversity.
B.How language and music affect each other.
C.Whether English is the official language of music.
D.Why Eurovision is becoming more and more popular.

George Gershwin, born in 1898, was one of America's greatest composers. He published his first song when he was eighteen years old.During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs.
Many of Gershwin's songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his songs have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way—from jazz to country.
In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz. Could jazz, some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that short time, he composed a piece for the piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin himself played the piano in the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz could be both serious and popular.
In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition(作曲)with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics(评论家)were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life; others said it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works.
George Gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old. Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages. People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.
8.What did Gershwin do during his stay in Paris?
A.He created one of his best works.
B.He studied with Nadia Boulanger.
C.He argued with French critics.
D.He changed his music style.
9.What do we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Many of Gershwin's works were lost.
B.The death of Gershwin was widely reported.
C.A concert was held in memory of Gershwin.
D.Brain cancer research started after Gershwin's death.
10.Which of the following best describes Gershwin?

We first saw the lost dog on a beach on Mahé, an island in the Seychelles, Africa. My kids, then six and eight, were building sandcastles, when he got close and watched them. The next day he appeared at the entrance of our holiday cottage(度假小别墅).
My husband Farid and I thought he was looking for food, but soon realized he just wanted company. He was shy, about three years old, with orange, fox-like fur, big eyes and a long nose. We called him Chell and after five or six days of him hanging about nearby, we became friends.
We posted a message online: was there somewhere that could take him in? Finally, we met Olga, a 19-year-old local with five lost dogs and a heart of gold, who agreed to take him in. Chell had only been with us a week, but when Olga arrived and tried to move him from our cottage to her car, he refused, making himself heavy. Eventually we managed it and watched sadly as they drove off.
“Will we ever see Chell again?” my elder daughter asked, crying. “I guess not,” I said, not wanting to sugarcoat it. But months later, Olga phoned us to say she was moving abroad to study and ask if we would like to take in Chell ourselves.
Of course, we took Chell home. It was cold, unlike the hot Seychelles, and he was afraid of most things: climbing the stairs, our other dog Kerstin (an ill-tempered female border terrier)—he even seemed afraid of himself. He'd start to play, then stop suddenly, the rush of happy emotions frightening him. This was perhaps the most heartbreaking of all: a dog who couldn't play.
Paragraph 1:
Months later, the weather turned cold and we let Chell into the yard to see his first snow.
Paragraph 2:
At that moment I realized he was going to be OK.

When I were a child, I spent more than five years learning the violin. Therefore, I couldn't find any fun in music. After I had graduated from high school a few years ago, a friend of mine suggested that we started to learn the guitar together. All of us thought it was cool. I will never forget the day that I went to buy my guitar in a guitar store. There I met one of my classmate. He helped me chose my guitar from the different models. He also shared his understand of music. Since then we have been playing the guitar together and music has become a important part of my life.

Asia's architectural treasures, from a Buddhist monastery in Afghanistan to an ancient city in China, are under threat due to economic development, poor technical resources, war and tourism, according to experts.
The Global Heritage Fund named 10 sites facing the loss and destruction impossible to recover. “These 10 sites represent only a small part of the endangered treasures across Asia and the rest of the developing world,” Jeff Morgan, executive director of the fund, said.
“We're looking at these millennial (千年的) civilizations leaping into the 21st century at a kind of pace that is unheard of,” said Vishakha N. Desai, president of the Asia Society, which hosted a conference based on the report. He mentioned the pressure of rapidly modernizing Asia on the architectural treasures.
Li Kuanghan, head of Global Heritage Fund's China program, underlined the importance in a presentation of working to preserve Pingyao, one of China's last surviving walled cities.“But up to 20 years ago, there were hundreds of similar walled cities left in China,” she said. “The majority of them have been destroyed.”
Experts said that global architectural preservation efforts are poorly balanced and targeted, with the UN cultural body UNESCO focusing almost entirely on sites in already rich European countries, rather than in places like Latin America or Asia. More than 80 percent of UNESCO World Heritage sites are located in the 10 richest states, the Global Heritage Fund said.
“Elsewhere, heritage is being undervalued,” Morgan said, warning that the endangered sites were sure to vanish without quick help. “We're going to lose them on our watch in the next 10 years.”

B.attempt to strengthen global cooperation

D.To stress the necessity of immediate action on heritage protection.
6.What does the underlined word “vanish” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?

I was 11 years old when I asked my mom for piano lessons in 2010. We were in the economic decline. She said a polite “no”.
That didn't stop me. I googled the measurements of a keyboard, drew the keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes on an online keyboard and “play” them back on my paper one—keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. Once my mom saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons.
I still remember the first one. I was struck by how real the sound of the piano was. I sat my grade one after eight lessons. Once I started secondary school, we couldn't afford lessons again. I passed grade three, then grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper.
One evening, when I was about 13, my mom said she had a surprise for me; it was an electronic keyboard, bought with more borrowed money. It was the first time I'd played for her. She was in shock.
My school didn't offer the music A level. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. But I had to pass a difficult test. Some of the questions involved an evaluation of the composer or when some pieces were written. I felt overwhelmed. To my amazement, I was offered a place.
At Purcell, I spent two years working as hard as I could. I performed to raise money and saved enough to buy my first piano.
When I left Purcell, I was awarded the senior piano prize and senior academic music prize. I am now at the Guildhall School in London. I feel proud: it's been 10 years since I drew my paper piano, and I'm at one of the world's leading music schools.
The irony is that I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the piano—what we call mental practice. The paper piano helped arouse my curiosity about how music works and the building blocks that form the pieces.
8.Why did the author's mom buy him lessons at last?
A.She was shocked by his first performance.
B.She had no doubt about his talent for the piano.
C.She realized he really wanted to learn how to play the piano.
D.She suddenly made a fortune.
9.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Honest. B.Determined.
C.Humorous. D.Optimistic.
10.What's the author's main purpose of writing this article?
A.To introduce the method of mental practice.
B.To share how he convinced his mom to buy a piano.
C.To describe how costly it is to learn an instrument.
D.To encourage people to stick to their dreams.

Endangered species are animals that are on their way to becoming extinct. Some of the reasons why animals become endangered are caused by humans. 11 Forests and grassland are being destroyed for farmland. Pollution is another leading cause of endangered animals. Air, water, and land pollution can harm animals by destroying their living environment. 12 For example, the arrival of new animal species in an area can endanger wild animals. All the reasons above have caused more and more animals to become endangered. So we should take action to help them. Here are some useful ways.
First, plant trees. Trees recycle oxygen, returning it to the air for us to breathe. 13
Second, pick up trash. Picking up trash not only protects the environment and keeps our surroundings beautiful, but it can also save wild animals by giving them a safer and cleaner environment. 14
15 The population increase threatens the wildlife as our resources become fewer and fewer, which influences wild animals' living environment greatly. So keep an eye on the latest news about endangered animals and reach out our hands! By contributing money, things or just volunteering, we will play a valuable role in the protection of wildlife and our earth!

The class was over. Karl was delighted that he had created a very satisfying work. So he walked to the back of the classroom to put his work away carefully. There, lying on the carpet in front of the classroom bookcase, was a golden ticket! Karl picked it up. His heart beat faster when he saw that the name line was blank(空白的). He couldn't believe his luck!
The boys and girls in Karl's class could earn golden tickets by doing well in their study or by being extra helpful or kind. Once a week their teacher drew a ticket out of a box on her desk and let the winner choose a prize.
Today was the golden ticket drawing, and here was another ticket, just for him!Karl looked around. No one else was near the ticket. All his classmates were at their desks, laughing and talking with each other. Miss Evans was engaged in grading the papers collected earlier in the morning.
Karl decided to write his name on the blank line. Then he could put it into the prize box with the six tickets he'd already earned. With so many chances, one of his tickets would most probably be picked! Then he could choose the pink toy pig for his sister's birthday, just as he had been hoping.
He smiled and reached for the pencil in his pocket. Suddenly his fingers stopped. There was a strange feeling in his chest, and it wasn't his heartbeat. “Finders are keepers, right?” he wondered. He looked out of the window and tried to figure it out. On the one hand, he did find the ticket, but he hadn't earned it. Somebody must have lost it. But on the other hand, he did need this extra ticket for his great plan!
Paragraph 1:
Karl looked at the blank name line for a moment.
Paragraph 2:
“Karl, I intend to give you another ticket!” Miss Evans said.

A
根据文章第一段中的“For its first concert, the theater refused the usual crowd of people and instead packed the house with plants.”和第二段中的“These lucky ficus trees, palms, and Swiss cheese plants...got the pleasure of hearing Puccini's Crisantemi performed by the UceLi Quartet string musical group.”
根据文章第二段中的“The idea was put forward by conceptual artist Eugeno Ampudia and the concert was broadcast live on the theater's website.”
根据文章第三段中的“Ampudia hopes that his idea and the work will inspire people to think more deeply about their relationship with nature and the concept of sustainability(可持续性).” 故选A。
激励 5.reflect on思考;反省 6.respond to...
Now that the concert is over, each plant will be given to a different frontline health care worker who helped guide the country through its battle with the coronavirus.
主干为each plant will be given to a different frontline health care worker; Now that引导原因状语从句;who引导定语从句,修饰先行词frontline health care worker。
根据第一段中的“Each May since 1956 people from across Europe and around the world have gathered around their televisions with friends and family for an evening of international entertainment(娱乐):the Eurovision Song Contest.” 再结合“In the first ten years of Eurovision, the UK and Ireland were the only two countries to sing in English. Now English is what we expect.” 由最后一句“Is it that English is becoming, or has become the official language of music?(难道英语正在或者已经变成音乐的官方语言了吗?)”
根据文章第二段中的“From high streets in Hungary to supermarkets in Sweden, from bus stops in Bulgaria to parks in Poland, people listen to English-language music everywhere. And people don't just listen, they sing it too! From sporting events in Spain to nightclubs in Norway, from concerts in Croatia to fitness classes in France, people sing along to popular songs in their everyday lives, in English.”
根据倒数第二段倒数第二句“According to Ragnar, lead singer of the Icelandic indie band 'Of Monsters and Men’, English is simpler and is easier to make rhythms(节奏).” 故选A。
根据第一段最后一句“Is it that English is becoming, or has become the official language of music?”
3.event n.
1 Each May since 1956 people from across Europe and around the world have gathered around their televisions with friends and family for an evening of international entertainment(娱乐):the Eurovision Song Contest.
Each May since 1956 是时间状语。 people是主语;介词短语from across Europe and around the world是people的后置定语。后面的介词短语for an evening of international entertainment 是目的状语。
2 It may well be a fun event but perhaps it's not the shared celebration of the European language that it could be.
but后的分句中又包含一个that引导的定语从句,修饰前面的the shared celebration。

One possible version:
Dear John,
I am sorry to hear that you are suffering from DouYin addiction. Actually, it is commonly seen that more and more teenagers get crazy about DouYin and spend a lot of time watching and sharing videos online, which makes them unable to focus on study. Therefore, I think it is a must for you to take action. You should start some other hobbies, such as reading, listening to music or playing chess. Besides, you had better make more friends through face-to-face communication.
I sincerely hope that these ideas can help you with the problem.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

So he walked up to his teacher. “Miss Evans, I happened to find this ticket on the floor near the bookcase. I think the one who lost it will look for it. And these are mine,” he said, dropping his six tickets into the box. When he turned around to leave, the teacher stopped him.
Paragraph 2:
“Karl, I intend to give you another ticket!” Miss Evans said. Karl was amazed and wondered why. Miss Evans smiled and signed to the class to quiet down, “Karl handed in the golden ticket he had just found. I think he is honest and deserves another one!” The class burst into loud applause. Karl happily went back to his seat, eagerly expecting the ticket drawing. He still wanted his name to be picked, but he would feel OK even if it wasn't. After all, making the right choice did make him feel great!
