Frm the minute I met him I didn't like Edward Dahlberg, r, maybe, I was nervus abut meeting a man f letters, my intrductin t the scial wrld f American literature.
The evening Alberta and I came ver, he sat in a deep armchair facing a semicircle f admirers. They asked his pinin abut varius writers. He waved his hand and, except fr himself, dismissed everyne in the twentieth century: Hemingway wrte “baby talk,” Faulkner “sludge.” Jyce's Ulysses was “a tiring walk thrugh the waste f Dublin.”
R'lene intrduced me. This is Frank McCurt frm Ireland. He teaches high schl English.
I put ut my hand but he let it hang. Oh, still a high schl by, are yu?
I didn't knw what t say. He laughed and said t R'lene, “Des ur friend teach English t deaf mutes (聋哑人)?” In the Dahlberg wrld teaching was fr wmen nly.
I backed away t my chair, cnfused.
He wasn't finished. He turned t me. Des ur high schl by read? And what des he read?
I searched my head fr smething I'd read recently, smething distinguished (出众的) that might please him.

He shk his head fr the benefit f his admirers and they shk their heads in agreement. He called t R'lene, “Tell yur high schl by t leave my presence. He's nt welcme here thugh his charming wife is welcme t stay.”

The Pmpidu Center is Eurpe's biggest mdern art museum; New Yrk's Museum f Mdern Art (MMA) is the biggest in the wrld. “But the tw museums have ttally different strategies (策略),” Lasvignes said. “The MMA's strategy is t cllect masterpieces, and we try t represent an entire epch (时代).”

Al Gre has been cncerned with climate change, r ‘climate crisis' as he calls it, fr the majrity f his plitical career. As the years passed and he became mre passinate abut this issue (问题), he started travelling the wrld in rder t educate peple abut the effects f glbal warming using cmputer slide shws. Free f charge, he explained t his audiences that the wrld is facing a ‘planetary emergency' and that it isn't t late t stp it if apprpriate actin is taken nw.
It was during this time f turing and giving lectures that Gre was sptted by Hllywd prducer Laurie David, wh asked him t turn his slide shws int a dcumentary in which he wuld play the starring rle. At first, Gre was reluctant, as he has always been a very private persn, despite (尽管) being used t being in the public eye. Eventually, thugh, David managed t persuade him. The result was a fascinating dcumentary cmbining references t Gre's wn life stry with hrrifying predictins abut the future f ur planet.
Little did Gre knw that just ne year later he wuld be walking alng the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival and later cllecting an Oscar fr ‘Best Dcumentary'. Advertised as ‘the scariest mvie yu'll see,' the mvie cncentrates n the ptentially terrifying cnsequences f climate change.
‘An Incnvenient Truth' certainly gives us much t cnsider. As the title f the film suggests, it may be incnvenient fr us t have t think abut the future f the planet, but think we must.
The prfits (收益) frm the film are nw funding ther campaigns t spread the message abut glbal warming. Gre is delighted that sme schls are even using the DVD t help them teach awareness f envirnmental issues t their students.
S can this ne man's effrts really make a difference? Well, accrding t Gre, if we are clear abut what the prblem is, then we are mre likely t intrduce changes int ur daily lives. It may nt seem as if the decisins f individuals (个人) can achieve very much, but put them all tgether and they may add up t smething that will, literally, change the wrld.

D. Unwilling.
3. What can we infer abut the film?
A. It was a great success.
B. It brught Gre in great mney.
C. It was far t scary fr many peple.
D. It avided the incnvenient crisis cnsequences.
4. What des the authr try t say in the last paragraph?
A. Persnal cntributins cunt.

C. Gre's effrts will make n difference t the wrld.

One f the first things yu may see when yu enter Clever Criminals and Daring Detectives is a wall f extremely strange wrds: Peg tantrums. Tip the velvet. Ptate trap. What culd these expressins mean?
These clrful idims cme frm A Dictinary f the Slang and Cant Languages by Gerge Andrewes (1809). “Cant” may refer t a dialect (方言) r even a cded (加密的) language used by a grup, particularly if members f that grup want t keep their meaning hidden frm utsiders. As yu can imagine, peple wh perate n the shady side f sciety — thieves, beggars — wuld have gd reasn t make their cnversatin difficult t understand t casual listeners. On the ther hand, everyne else — law enfrcement, curius writers — wuld want t be in n the secret.
Andrewes' cant dictinary was published with the authr's firm intentin t “expse” the language f criminals with the aim f “the mre easy detectin f their crimes.” It's less clear hw this wuld wrk in practice; I can't help but imagine sme detectives walking arund the less fashinable addresses in Lndn with cant dictinary in hand, stealthily turning ver the pages t keep up with an verheard criminal plan. But this wuld have prved an ineffective means f detecting criminals, as Andrewes' definitins were taken almst wrd-fr-wrd frm an earlier wrk by Humphrey Tristram Ptter, which itself was drawn frm even lder surces.
S if cant dictinaries weren't an effective tl in a criminal's tl kit, why were they in such high demand that writers kept prducing them fr centuries? Perhaps the cant dictinaries share sme f the characteristics that made detective fictin s ppular in the nineteenth century. There is certainly the attractin f a secretive lk int the underwrld: the average citizen may have n reasn t hide their meaning behind mysterius wrds, but it's rather interesting t think abut thse wh d. Fictin writers certainly made gd use f cant dictinaries in writing dialgue fr shady characters: ntably, Charles Dickens was highly praised fr his descriptin f Oliver Twist's band f pickpckets, whse talk relies heavily n Andrewes' cant research.
Perhaps there is als the pleasure in decding a message r slving a riddle: if a ptate trap isn't an equipment t catch tubers, then what is it? It's a little linguistic puzzle t slve.
5. What is cant?
A. Criminal slang.
B. Lcal language.
C. Cmplex idims.
D. Specialized wrds.
6. Why did Andrewes publish the dictinary?
A. T explain wrd usage.
B. T help criminal-arresting.
C. T simplify criminal language.
D. T cnnect criminals t detectives.
7. What is the authr's pinin n the dictinary?
A. It's very imprtant.
B. It's almst useless.
C. It's simple.
D. It's funny.
8. What made cant dictinaries widely liked?
A. The beneficial influence f detective nvels.
B. Peple's natural lve fr ppular detectives.
C. The examples in Charles Dickens' wrk.
D. Peple's hate fr criminals.
