A four-year-old boy who is crazy about collecting rubbish has finally fulfilled his dream of being a cleaner. Riley McCourt has admired the local rubbish collectors for ages, spending his days picking up waste on his street and wheeling bins(垃圾桶)to the side of the road to help out his neighbors. He loves cleaning and binning waste. His favorite chore is to empty the rubbish bin from the chip shop his mum runs. Two weeks ago, however, a disaster struck: Riley accidentally knocked over one of the bins and was accused of causing trouble.
Someone posted news in the local Facebook group saying that Riley had put rubbish in the street, clearly unaware of his love for keeping the streets clean. Thankfully his innocence was quickly proven, and his local council decided to make his dream come true by allowing him to work alongside the cleaners for a day.
Riley joined the waste collection crew on Wednesday, chatting with the team, helping with the recycling, and riding in the waste collection vehicles. He even got his own jacket. Riley's mum, Toni McCourt, said, “He loves the bins and trucks.” Riley's favorite day is definitely bin day. He goes round collecting the rubbish on the street. The cleaners all know him when they spot him. He goes outside as soon as he sees them come round. He helps his neighbors put their bins out for collection.
Riley clearly made a good impression during his first day on the job, as community services manager Jane Carrol said, who was very pleased with his enthusiasm for the role. Jane said, “Riley is clearly a keen recycler and when he is older I'm sure he will make an excellent member of the team here. It is a pleasure for the team to show him around.”

Being social and emotional from an early age is likely to help children win acceptance from their peers, build better relationships with teachers, and facilitate academic learning. According to research, pretend play is a teaching tool that can be used to stimulate a child's all-round development.
A curriculum based on this approach has been introduced to classes of pupils aged five and six by a research team from the University of Geneva. The study shows that pupils who followed the curriculum increased their emotional recognition capacities and emotional levels compared to a control group. The use of pretend play as a teaching tool enables children to acquire emotional skills, with a potential positive effect on their prosocial(亲社会的)behavior and, in the longer term, on their academic success.
“Potential leads for learning do exist,” says Sylvie Richard. “We know already that pretend play promotes the understanding and regulation of emotions together with prosocial behavior in the early stages of schooling.”
Pretend play gives children the opportunity to use their imagination, in particular by means of scenarios(方案)that they invent and the roles they play. “For instance, they can pretend to be a wizard or a witch who's making a kind of magic water that will send a dangerous dragon to sleep. The child creates the rules, and adjusts them to the situation,” explains Sylvie Richard.
A total of 79 children took part in the research, with the result showing improvement in the recognition of emotions, particularly anger. The children also built up their emotional vocabulary. “The results suggest that it's essential to design a teaching system that takes pretend play into account as an area of knowledge that should be taught. Moreover, the study shows that using this kind of play helps children experiment,” concludes Sylvie Richard. Given its success, the study is continuing with a more extensive curriculum, which is being carried out now in Valais.
8.What does the underlined word “facilitate” mean in the first paragraph?
A.Prevent. B.Change. C.Enhance. D.Influence.
9.What is Sylvie Richard's attitude to pretend play?
A.Objective. B.Negative.
C.Concerned. D.Supportive.
10.What can children learn from pretend play?
A.Making magic water.
B.Mastering more emotional words.
C.Being a wizard or a witch.
D.Pretending to be angry to others.
11.What's the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To help children win acceptance from their peers.
B.To help children to be social and emotional.
C.To introduce a learning tool.
D.To stimulate children's all-round development.

Scientists found the moon may hold water in more places and in larger amounts than what they have suggested in the past. The finding is based on studies that examined the new data from the U.S. space agency NASA.The discovery could be important for planned, long-term human bases on the moon. It could mean that enough resources exist on the moon itself to provide drinking water and possibly help produce rocket fuel.
Until about ten years ago, scientists believed the moon was mostly desiccated(干燥的). But a series of findings provided evidence that water ice was widespread in small amounts on parts of the moon. The ice was thought to be in areas permanently blocked from sunlight.
But in the new studies, NASA said it was able to confirm the presence of water molecules(分子)on sunlit parts of the lunar surface. The research was led by Casey Honniball of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.
Scientists have suggested the source of the water may come from comets(彗星), solar wind or interplanetary(星际的)dust. The new research provides evidence that the water may be surviving on sunlit lunar surfaces because it is attached to minerals.
“A lot of people think that the discovery I have made is water ice, which is not true,” Honniball said. “It's just the water molecules—because they are so spread out that they don't interact with each other to form water ice or even liquid water.”
“Water is extremely important for deep space exploration. It's a resource of direct value for our astronauts,” Jacob Bleacher of NASA said. He noted that water is heavy and costly to transport from Earth. He told reporters the agency believes it is very important to find out more about where the water comes from and how accessible it is.
“When we don't need to pack water for our trip, we have an opportunity to take other useful items with us,” he said. That may include materials that could be used to carry out bigger scientific experiments on the moon.
12.How do scientists feel about the discovery?
A.Excited. B.Unconcerned.
C.Calm. D.Doubtful.
13.What may the future research focus on?
A.How the water survives on the sunlit lunar surface.
B.How to make use of the water on the moon.
C.How the water is attached to minerals.
D.How much water is on the lunar surface.
14.What is the special part of the water on the moon?
A.It comes from other planets.
B.It is safe to drink.
C.It can't be used directly.
D.It can't be found in the dark areas.
15.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Moon Space Bases will Be Built
B.More Water May Exist on the Moon
C.Space Exploration Gets into a New Age
D.Liquid Water Is Discovered on the Moon

It's hard to say goodbye to your favorite pair of jeans, even when they're way beyond wearable. 16
Netherton-born artist Ian Berry has made quite a name for himself after his unique art took the art world by storm. It's hard to believe the idea of using old denim(牛仔布)as medium for his art came after a call from his mother, Christine, asking him to clean out his room. “It was about six or seven years ago. My mum was clearing out my old room and she wanted me to go through my things. I found loads of old jeans and denim and I noticed the different colors and shades. I kept hold of them but it was only about 18 months later that I began to do something with them.” 17
Ian Berry quit his full-time job in advertising to focus all his attention on art. 18 And he remembers his girlfriend's parents asking if artists could make a living in this day and age. But his gamble(冒险)paid off and soon his denim artworks were the stars of sell-out shows in Sweden and the US, and his pieces were sold to private and public collections all over the world.
Iain Barratt, director of the Catto Gallery, told The Examiner, “What Ian Berry does is extraordinary. 19 And what absolute treasures they are. Ian makes remarkably detailed portraits and urban landscapes using nothing more than discarded(丢弃的)jeans—the effect is extraordinary.”
20 Ian Berry uses old jeans, a pair of scissors and some glue to create all his incredible detailed works of art. After 12 years of working with denim, the English artist has managed to fill seven closets with old pairs of jeans, so it's safe to say he has plenty of material for his future works.
A.So many people would rather put their jeans away than throw them away.
B.He didn't know his experiment would soon make him and his denim art famous all over the world.
C.It was a risky move.
D.He thought he would earn a lot of money in his new career.
E.But English artist Ian Berry has found a way to use denim to create beautiful works of art.
F.Denim art is as simple as it is beautiful.
G.People can't see how he's created these wonderful scenes until they see it up close and touch it.

Peter had been saving money for a very long time. He was struggling so much that all he wished was to go abroad and make more money. So when he had the required amount, he travelled to a foreign country to make a good living.
Upon getting there, Peter worked very hard and finally built his own business. After years of hard work, he became a millionaire. He called his family and informed them that they would not have to worry about money any more for he would be sending them enough and everyone would be happy.
He couldn't have been proven more wrong!
Five years later, as the business grew, Peter had no time to stay at home and was always busy running his business and attending meetings.
He missed his family. He hadn't seen them for four years. Every year he promised himself that he would go and visit them but that promise was broken at every attempt to accomplish it for one business reason or another. But his family were understanding and never complained. Peter had thought that money would make his life good but even though he had more money than he ever imagined, he was not happy. He was tired of trying to pretend that he was happy with his projects and work.
Sometimes he wanted to leave the country and the business and go back to his old life, but the thought of not being able to survive if he left his business stopped him.
When he met his family a few years later, it was only for a few days. His family wanted him to stay longer but he didn't. At the same time, he was given the most difficult and challenging task during his career whose completion would not only improve his image but also result in him earning millions of dollars. This work kept him so engaged that he gave his mind wholly to the task. His hard work resulted in great profit and he was more successful than ever before.

18.C 前句指出“Ian Berry quit his full-time job in advertising to focus all his attention on art.”,C选项“这是一步险棋”所指正好与“辞掉工作”吻合,且后句也提到了Ian女朋友的父母担心他如何谋生,上下文连贯。故选C项。
19.A 本段是引述Iain Barratt对Ian艺术的评价,前句先点明“what Ian Berry does is extraordinary.”,A选项“很多人宁愿把牛仔裤收下来也不会扔掉”符合语境,且后句“And what absolute treasures they are.” 故选A项。
20.F 由后句“Ian Berry uses old jeans, a pair of scissors and some glue to create all his incredible detailed works of art.”

be home to意为“为……
分析句子结构可知,that it is the “god frog” 42 keeps the mosquitoes at bay是宾语从句,在宾语从句中,把it is和该空去掉,句子结构完整,语义清晰,由此判断该句为强调句,强调句的基本结构是:it is/was + 被强调部分 + that + 句子的其他成分,如果被强调的部分是人,可以用who代替that,这里强调the “god frog”,所以填that。
4.explanation n.解释 5.make up编造
