Florence, a 17-year-old student in senior high school, is busy composing a song. She plans to release an album with three other music lovers whom she met at the 2016 Campus Singing Competition. Edward, 18, is another one of the four students to make their own album. Actually, he is the one who came up with this fun idea in the first place.
“Everyone loves music. Being a good way to express our feelings and emotions, music can tell something about who we are and our experience of the world. We hope we can use our music to touch our peers(同龄人),” Edward said.
The album includes 15 songs across three themes—love, campus life, and youth, with pop and electronic music styles. The inspiration for the songs came from the students' lives. Take the song Sea of Tranquility for example—it was written by Edward during a flight back to Chengdu after he took part in the China High School Biology Olympiad in summer. “The sky is clear and the ground looks small from the plane. This scene makes me feel calm and peaceful,” Edward explained.
The songs were created one by one with the efforts of the four composers. But a challenge soon appeared. The students found that they didn't have enough money to produce the album. So to cut down their budget, they used an iPad and headphones to record the songs in an empty classroom on the weekend.
Apart from reducing their cost, they also tried to raise money through crowd funding on the Internet. They raised more than 7,000 dollars before the album was released in October. “Thanks to all the supporters, we'll keep working on our own music,” Edward said.
4.Why did they make the album?

Even thousands of years before the “selfie(自拍)” was invented, people were concerned with the image of themselves they presented to the world. The rulers of ancient Egypt had artists carve portraits of them to decorate their tombs and preserve their images even after death.
King Tutankhamen lived more than 3,000 years ago. He ruled ancient Egypt for 10 years, until his death at 19. “King Tut” remained practically unknown in the modern world until 1922, when scientists discovered his tomb, buried and forgotten for centuries. The treasures inside gave the world the first detailed picture of ancient Egyptian life.
The ancient Egyptians worshipped(崇拜) many gods. They also believed that all people had a life spirit, called “ka” that needed a place to live after the body died. Tombs inside huge pyramids protected the pharaohs'(法老) ka. The ka could also exist in portrait sculptures like the one of a seated Hatshepsut. As the wife of a pharaoh, Hatshepsut took on the role of the king after her husband died. Carved from limestone, this life-size sculpture shows the life force of Hatshepsut's ka. The artist suggests Hatshepsut's strength by placing her feet firmly on the ground and resting her hands on her knees in a firm, powerful pose.
Viewers are meant to look at the sculpture of Hatshepsut from a frontal angle only. But artist Thutmose created his portrait of Queen Nefertiti as a sculpture in the round, meaning viewers should observe it from many points of view. The work is a highly realistic portrait of a queen who ruled beside her husband, a pharaoh. Painted with delicate(精细的) features, the impressive colors in her portrait resemble the makeup Nefertiti probably wore in life.
Long before any of these portraits were created, a huge creature with a lion's body and a human head stood guarding in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. No one knows who created the Great Sphinx, or why, but it is said to resemble an early pharaoh. Carved out of solid rock on a larger-than-life scale, it is possibly the oldest and most imposing portrait in the world.
8.By what does the artist present Hatshepsut's strength?
    A.Gesture. B.Material.
    C.Color. D.Size.
9.What do you think of the portrait of Nefertiti?
    A.Imaginative. B.Lifelike.
    C.Threatening. D.Abstract.
10.What might be the Great Sphinx?
    A.A king of animals.
B.A guard as brave as a lion.
C.A portrait of an early pharaoh.
D.A creature owned by a pharaoh.
    11.What's the passage mainly about?
A.The oldest selfie in the world.
    B.Some powerful kings in Egypt.
C.Some portraits of kings in some countries.
D.Some portrait sculptures of ancient Egyptian rulers.

Every year in May, art galleries and museums prepare shows to honor Leonardo da Vinci, who died in France on May 2, 1519. He is remembered as one of the greatest artists and the most creative thinkers of all time. His most famous paintings are Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
Recently, researchers have been studying a painting—Landscape 8P which, they think, is Leonardo da Vinci's earliest-known artwork. They used special lighting to study the artwork and discovered there were two images, not one. One drawing is on the back of the piece, which dates back to August 5, 1473.
The drawing on the front was painted when Leonardo was 21 years old. It shows a river valley and a castle outside the city of Florence. There is little left of the drawing on the back, perhaps because it was wiped off. Only a bridge over a river can be seen. But there is writing on both sides.
The writing on the front gives the date and goes from right to left. Some people would call this “mirror-writing”. It's a way Leonardo often wrote in his notebooks. The writing on the back goes from left to right and tells about an agreement, probably to produce a work of art.
Cecilia Frosinini is an art historian. She said, “Leonardo was born left-handed, but was taught to write with his right hand from a very young age. By looking at his writings, including that from this drawing, we can see his right-handed handwriting is educated and well done.”
Experts compared the two handwriting samples(样本)and said they were both made by Leonardo. They show he could write well using his left hand or his right hand.
The drawing is known as Landscape 8P from its number in an art list. It will be part of an exhibit at Italy's Uffizi Gallery. The gallery director, Eike Schmidt, said by studying the drawing researchers gave us a new way of looking at Leonardo's drawing technique and his abilities in writing.
12.Which of the following mentioned in the text has been studied by researchers recently?
    A.Mona Lisa. B.Landscape 8P.
    C.Mirror-writing. D.The Last Supper.
13.What does the writing on the back probably tell about?
    A.A statement about the painting.
    B.An introduction about Leonardo.
C.An agreement to produce a painting.
D.Something about the city of Florence.
14.What can we learn about Leonardo from Cecilia's words?
A.He could write with either of his hands.
B.He did badly in right-handed handwriting.
C.He wasn't good at writing with his left hand.
D.He taught himself to write with his right hand.
15.What's Eike Schmidt's attitude towards the research?
    A.Unclear. B.Indifferent.
    C.Doubtful. D.Positive.

19 Peng Yixuan, a news reporter of China Daily, recorded her first experience attending and reporting on the Two Sessions in March of this year. With a relaxed, chatty and personal approach, she presented the conferences, “bringing more warmth to the grand political event”, according to People's Daily.

    第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
School mornings were always busy. The first sentence I usually heard was, “It's time to rise!” It was Mom's loudest voice, and there was no way I could pretend not to hear it or hide from it.
By then, I couldn't get to the kitchen fast enough. In fact, it was a race between my sister, my brother, and me. We usually seated ourselves at the same time, sometimes knocking each other out of our places. After breakfast, we all rushed out to the bus stop as we took our lunch bags that contained a sandwich, fruit, and dessert.
Then, one day, much to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch! What could have happened to it? Did Mom forget to make or buy it? Oh, well, I thought. It's only one time, so it's no big deal. But, for the next few days, my lunch contained no dessert! So one day, after school, as soon as I got home, I asked, “Mom! Why haven't you been putting a dessert in my school lunch?”
Mom answered, “Why, Eugene, I have been including a dessert in your lunch. If you're not getting it, then who is?”
So then we thought of my activities, and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at school, I always put my lunch in the classroom closet(储物间) along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl—the bad boy of the third-grade classroom. The teacher didn't like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of each day.
Carl lived in a group foster home(集体寄养之家). He was loud and somewhat of a thief. He would take just about anything that wasn't fastened down(盖紧), so he wasn't welcome at school. Mom and I decided that with nothing else to do Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.
    注意:续写词数应为150左右。

    Paragraph 2:
Another day, Carl asked me if he could come to my house and meet my mother.

    One possible version:
    Dear Smith,
I know you are keen on traditional Chinese painting, and I'm glad to inform you of the good news that an art exhibition will be held from February 1st to February 15th in Bada Shanren Gallery, where more than 100 paintings of Bada Shanren will be on show.
Bada Shanren Gallery is the perfect place to appreciate the works of Bada Shanren, a great artist of Nanchang in the 17th century. Not only did he make great achievements in painting, especially landscape painting, but his calligraphy was also well-known at his time. His works are full of his own personality and have a deep and far-reaching influence on later painters including Qi Baishi.
I promise you will fall in love with his works and gain a lot once you pay a visit to the show.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

Another day, Carl asked me if he could come to my house and meet my mother. I told him that he would be welcome at our house as long as he did not steal anything. He agreed.
