    There is an ld saying that America and Britain are “tw natins divided by a cmmn language”. N ne knws exactly wh said this, but it reflects the way many British peple feel abut American English. But are American and British English really s different?
    Vcabulary
    The mst bvius difference between American and British English is vcabulary. There are hundreds f everyday wrds that are different. Fr example, Americans g n vacatin while British peple g n hliday; New Yrkers live in apartments while Lndners live in flats. There are far mre examples than we can talk abut here. Frtunately, mst Americans and British peple can usually guess the meaning thrugh the cntext f a sentence.
    Past Tense Verbs
    Yu'll als find sme differences in past frms f irregular verbs. The past tense f “learn” in American English is “learned”. British English has the ptin f “learned” r “learnt”. The same rule applies t “dreamed” and “dreamt”, “burned” and “burnt”, and “leaned” and “leant”. Americans tend t use the -ed ending; British peple tend t use the -t ending.
    Spelling
    There are hundreds f slight spelling differences between British and American English. Nah Webster, an authr, plitician and teacher, made an effrt t refrm English spelling in the late 1700s.
    Webster wanted t spell wrds the way they sunded. Yu can see Webster's legacy in the American spelling f wrds like clr (frm clur), hnr (frm hnur), and labr (frm labur).

    British and American English have far mre similarities than differences. With the exceptin f sme reginal dialects, mst British peple and Americans can understand each ther withut t much difficulty. They watch each ther's TV shws, sing each ther's sngs and read each ther's bks. They even make fun f each ther's accents(口音).
