    A
    People You've Never Heard of
    Who Changed the World
It is a fact that most people live their lives unremarked by history. Whether by design or by accident, there are always some pioneers whose achievements changed the course of history but whose names are unknown to us.
    James Harrison
James Harrison has saved the lives of over two million people by donating his blood 1,173 times, a Guinness World Record. His blood produces a rare antibody (抗体) which cures the deadly Rhesus disease in unborn children. It has also been used in the development of a medicine anti-D, which will cure the Rhesus disease in children forever.
    Lewis Latimer
After helping Alexander Graham Bell obtain his patent for the telephone, Lewis Latimer patented a carbon filament (碳灯丝), which allowed light bulbs to burn for hours before burning out, much more useful than that invented by Thomas Edison at that time. Latimer went on to invent many other useful devices, including a device which cooled and cleaned patients' rooms in hospitals.
    Maurice Hilleman
Not all achievements require bravery and self-sacrifice. Take Maurice Hilleman for example. He found another way to change the world. He developed the mumps vaccine (疫苗) after his daughter got the illness. And he didn't stop there. In total, he has single-handedly developed over 40 vaccines, including eight commonly given to children. His work has saved millions of lives and prevented serious consequences due to the diseases.
    Nils Bohlin
In 1959 Nils Bohlin patented a revolutionary design that has saved millions of lives—the three-point safety belt. After the initial resistance from drivers who hated being told what to do, and even for their own good, the three-point safety belt has become a standard feature in new cars around the world.

    C.They were surprised at it.
    D.They got excited about it.
    B
I was born with bad eyesight. At high school I couldn't read the blackboard. By the time I got to the University of Bath to study chemistry, it had got to the point where I couldn't really see images at all, only the difference between light and dark. And a few years later, once I was in the first year of my PhD, I was almost completely blind.
But climbing is my great passion.I started climbing when I was young. My dad taught me everything about climbing. When I was 11, I led my first climbing route outside. People are usually amazed when they discover that not only do I climb, but I also lead climbs.
At university I joined the Mountaineering Club and was able to climb much more frequently. We had regular trips to indoor walls and went outdoors on weekends. I developed a great circle of climbing friends and went on several trips to Europe. After these I started alpine climbing and ice climbing, too.
When my sight dropped to a level where I could no longer read, I thought I might have to give up leading. But I never thought I would stop climbing. I just learnt to adapt with the support of my friends.
People often ask me, “Why rock climbing? It doesn't seem like a good activity for a blind person.”
But when I think about the danger, crossing the road is far more dangerous, and also, it's something where I'm not in control.
It's quite possible that I wouldn't be such a good climber if I weren't blind. If I didn't have these challenges, it wouldn't focus me.That determination is built through my disability.
When I reach the top of a climb, I don't get to appreciate the view, but the feeling of achievement is extremely good.
Climbing is a way to prove my way of thinking in life. I'm not disabled; I'm blind but able.
4.Which of the following statements is TRUE when the author went to university?

The Sidamo lark(西达莫歌百灵), discovered by scientists in 1968, is known only from a small area of southern Ethiopia. The bird is one of the most ancient types of larks known anywhere.
The Sidamo lark has brown feathers. Male and female Sidamo larks look alike. It calls with a series of quick and short sounds, typically heard as it flies high into the sky. The Sidamo lark has very special habitat requirements, having only been found in grassland with a few bushes. For thousands of years, both the wild animals and humans kept the grassland in good condition. This habitat is now being destroyed. Wild animals are too few to stop bushes growing, while growing agriculture is damaging the grassland. The Sidamo lark is thought to have a very small population now.
The Sidamo lark could soon be the first bird in mainland Africa to die out since modern records began. Research has found that just a few hundred of the larks survive in Ethiopia. Unless action is taken to save it, the bird will disappear. It will be the first recorded bird dying out on the continent.
To save the bird from extinction, environmentalists have suggested the creation of small fields in which cattle could eat grass. This would stop damage to the grassland and protect the grass cover. Bushes should also be removed, while a limit should be placed on crops coming further into the bird's habitat.
8.What kind of habitat does the Sidamo lark need?
    A.Grassland with thick bushes.
    B.Grassland with many wild animals.
C.Grassland covered with bushes here and there.
    D.Grassland with a few bushes.
9.What do we know about the Sidamo lark's habitat now?
A.It is under good protection now.
B.It has been replaced by small fields in which cattle eat grass.
C.It is being damaged by agriculture.
D.It has been removed to some other places.
10.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Thick bushes are harmful to the survival of Sidamo larks.
B.Africa has the most kinds of larks in the world.
C.Larks only exist in the African mainland.
D.Larks are found where there is grassland.
11.Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Sidamo lark, a beautiful bird in Africa
B.The Sidamo lark soon to be extinct
C.The ways to protect the Sidamo lark
D.The Sidamo lark and its habitat
    D
Why don't we have eyes in the back of our heads? There are at least two reasons.Eyes are biologically expensive things to make and rear-view(后视)eyes don't fit well into the human evolution(进化).
Even animals, such as rabbits, whose main survival advantage is rear vision(后视野), have only the side eyes. Rear vision is not so important. There are other species that have evolved this ability by moving the position of their eyes relative to the rest of their head. Many birds have their eyes positioned towards the side of their head, allowing them a very wide angle of vision and, in the case of some birds such as the woodcock, they are positioned so they can actually achieve 360-degree vision. It is also obvious that spiders, which tend to have many eyes, only have them facing forwards.
Humans, and probably some other animals, do have another adapted sense to make it up.Many experiments showed that sounds behind the head were noticed by a listener more than sounds to the front, especially if a listener was in a dark room. So, our ears can make up for the lack of rear-facing vision. You can look at it another way.Rear vision is useful only if the potential threat is visible.During human evolution, that was most often not the case.
Finally, there is often more than one potential “solution” to a given problem. In many species, the answer to maintaining 360-degree awareness of surrounding danger is to rely on many eyes.Social behavior is common in the animal kingdom and one reason for this is that there is safety in numbers. You might be looking the wrong way when a tiger approaches, but if your teammates raise the alarm, this is as effective as having eyes in the back of your head.
12.Why do humans have no rear-view eyes?
A.They are bad for human survival.
B.They are replaced by other organs.
C.They are less likely to spot the danger.
D.They are abandoned by natural selection.
13.What is the purpose of Paragraph 2?
    A.To state rear-view eyes aren't a must for surv-ival.
B.To explain why animals have other functional eyes.
C.To prove rabbits, birds and spiders are very special.
D.To show rear-view eyes are against the natural selection.
14.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
    A.Sensitive hearing.
B.The visible threat behind the head.
    C.The sound behind the head.
    D.Rear vision.
15.Where does the text most likely come from?
    A.A travel brochure.
    B.Fiction.
    C.A science magazine.
    D.A book review.

Sleeping in class prevents you from paying attention to the teacher as well as stops you from learning about the material that is being taught. 16 It is important to determine why you are falling asleep in class and try to change the situation so that you are able to stay awake and pass all of your classes. There are a number of different tricks you can use to try to stay awake.
Get a full night's sleep on school nights. It is reported that teenagers may need more sleep than adults. 17 This is a key part of staying awake in class. If you are not tired, you are unlikely to fall asleep.
Eat a healthy breakfast full of nutritious food. 18 If you get hungry or tired in the middle of the day, try eating a healthy snack like a piece of fruit or some biscuits.
19 If you are actively engaged in the information the teacher is presenting, you are less likely to doze off. Taking notes, asking questions and otherwise getting involved in classroom activities and discussions will make you far less likely to doze off.
Contact your doctor in order to rule out medical conditions that can cause you to fall asleep. 20 Prescription drugs may also cause sleepiness as a side effect, so discuss any medicine you are taking with your doctor.
    A.Get involved during class.
B.Early to bed, early to rise.
C.Sleeping more helps a lot in your study.
D.It can also get you in trouble with your teachers.
E.It can provide you with enough protein to fuel your body.
F.Go to bed earlier and make sure you get as many hours of sleep as your body needs.
G.If you have a medical condition that is causing you to fall asleep in class, it will need to be treated by a professional.

    A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother—loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way.As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends.Who knew if we'd ever see them again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we'd returned home to get the purse and traveler's checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and act as a lookout(望风者)when I go, and I'll stand outside the door and act as a lookout when you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What? Oh, my gosh...I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren't about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn't we find a house with a backyard and ask if we could set up the tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections(反对).If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is.We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

    A
After helping Alexander Graham Bell obtain his patent for the telephone, Lewis Latimer patented a carbon filament(碳灯丝), which allowed light bulbs to burn for hours before burning out, much more useful than that invented by Thomas Edison at that time.
After the initial resistance from drivers who hated being told what to do...
    1.donate v.捐赠 2.device n.装置 3.consequence n.后果
    4.initial adj.
Whether by design or by accident, there are always some pioneers whose achievements changed the course of history but whose names are unknown to us.
Whether...or...
By the time I got to the University of Bath to study chemistry, it had got to the point where I couldn't really see images at all, only the difference between light and dark.(我到巴斯大学学习化学的时候,我已经完全看不到图像了,只有光和暗的区别。) At high school I couldn't read the blackboard. 是发生在作者读高中时;根据only the difference between light and dark可知,作者是可以分得清光和暗的,故B项(他分不清光明和黑暗。) And a few years later, once I was in the first year of my PhD, I was almost completely blind.
When my sight dropped to a level where I could no longer read, I thought I might have to give up leading.(当我的视力下降到不能再阅读的水平时,我想我可能不得不放弃带路。)以及I just learnt to adapt with the support of my friends.(我只是在朋友的支持下学会了适应。)
It's quite possible that I wouldn't be such a good climber if I weren't blind.If I didn't have these challenges, it wouldn't focus me.That determination is built through my disability.(如果我不是盲人,很可能就不会成为这么好的登山者。
Climbing is a way to prove my way of thinking in life. I'm not disabled; I'm blind but able.(攀岩是证明我的生活思维方式的一种方式。
    1.be born with天生就有…… 2.passion n.酷爱;热衷的爱好(或活动等) 3.with the support of在……
By the time I got to the University of Bath to study chemistry, it had got to the point where I couldn't really see images at all, only the difference between light and dark.
其中By the time引导时间状语从句;where引导定语从句,修饰先行词point。
由文章第二段中的“The Sidamo lark has very special habitat requirements, having only been found in grassland with a few bushes.”
由第二段中的“...while growing agriculture is damaging the grassland.”
    1.ancient adj.古老的 2.a series of 一系列的 3.habitat n.
Wild animals are too few to stop bushes growing, while growing agriculture is damaging the grassland.
too...to... /sth. (from) doing sth.
Why don't we have eyes in the back of our heads? There are at least two reasons. Eyes are biologically expensive things to make and rear-view(后视)eyes don't fit well into the human evolution(进化).
Even animals, such as rabbits, whose main survival advantage is rear vision(后视野), have only the side eyes. Rear vision is not so important.
Rear vision is useful only if the potential threat is visible.(只有在潜在威胁是可以看见的时候,后视才有用。)
Why don't we have eyes in the back of our heads? There are at least two reasons. Eyes are biologically expensive things to make and rear-view(后视)eyes don't fit well into the human evolution(进化).(为什么我们的眼睛没有长在脑后?

Many birds have their eyes positioned towards the side of their head, allowing them a very wide angle of vision and, in the case of some birds such as the woodcock, they are positioned so they can actually achieve 360-degree vision.
前面的分句中,现在分词短语allowing them a very wide angle of vision作结果状语。

Eat a healthy breakfast full of nutritious food.

Sleeping in class prevents you from paying attention to the teacher as well as stops you from learning about the material that is being taught.
Sleeping in class。prevent/stop sb. from doing sth. that is being taught是定语从句,修饰the material。

    36.will reach 根据时间状语in 2025可知设空处需用一般将来时,故填will reach。

The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we brought with us. To our delight, Mom gave up the idea of camping in some stranger's backyard. Instead, we found a wonderful camping site in the wild. It was a clearing in the wood by a small lake, where Dad could catch some fish for dinner. We had no trouble setting up our tent, but we were disappointed to find that Mom forgot to pack up pillows. Needless to say, we all woke up with a sore neck the next morning.
    Paragraph 2:
We drove through several states and saw lots of sights along the way. What a fantastic trip it was! We crossed big rivers and vast plains, climbed high mountains, and overlooked deep valleys. During the trip,Mom's being absent-minded not only got us into much trouble, but also gave us many funny moments. But luckily, she was not so forgetful as to leave David and me behind in the gas station bathrooms. We all arrived at grandparents' homes safe and sound.
