Runners in a relay race pass a stick in one direction. However, merchants passed silk, gold, fruit, and glass along the Silk Road in more than one direction. They earned their living by traveling the famous Silk Road.
The Silk Road was not a simple trading network. It passed through thousands of cities and towns. It was used from about 200 B.C. to about 1300 A.D., when sea travel offered new routes. It was sometimes called the world’s longest highway. However, the Silk Road was made up of many routes, not one smooth path. They passed through what are now 18 countries. The routes crossed mountains and deserts and had many dangers of the hot sun, deep snow and even battles. Only experienced traders could return safe and sound.
The Silk Road got its name from its most prized product. Silk could be used like money to pay taxes or buy goods. But the traders carried more than just silk. Gold, silver, and glass from Europe were much found in the Middle East and Asia. Horses traded from other areas changed farming practices in China.
Indian merchants traded salt and other valuable goods. Chinese merchants traded paper, which produced an immediate effect on the West. Apples traveled from Central Asia to Rome. The Chinese had learned to graft(嫁接)different trees together to make new kinds of fruit. They passed this science on to others, including the Romans. The Romans used grafting to grow the apple. Trading along the Silk Road led to worldwide business 2,000 years before the World Wide Web. The people along the Silk Road did not share just goods. They also shared their beliefs. The Silk Road provided pathways for learning, diplomacy, and religion.
4.What is required to be traders along the Silk Road?

    B.People shared each other’s beliefs.
    C.People learned from one another.
D.People made a living by traveling.
7.What is the best title for the passage?

Every summer, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) invites teenage volunteers to work alongside archeologists at one of several dig sites across the country. The program, designed to provide the youth with an archeology experience and to help them connect with Israel’s history, usually results in the discovery of ancient tools. However, two teenagers at a site in Yavneh unearthed a clay pot holding hundreds of gold coins on August 18, 2020.
The gold treasure dates back 1,100 years to the Abbasid Caliphate, a dynasty that ruled over Persia and North Africa during the 9th century. The 425 coins include full gold coins, as well as 270 small gold cuttings.
Robert Kool, a coin expert of the IAA, says cutting gold and silver coins to make small change became a common practice in Islamic countries during the 850s after the sudden disappearance of the more affordable bronze and copper coins. However, special among the collection was a small piece cut from a coin called “gold solidus” made in Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. Kool says it’s the first such coin ever found in Israel and could show there was trade and cultural exchange between the Byzantine Empire and the Abbasid Caliphate.
“Finding gold coins, in such a quantity, is extremely contrary to usual situations. We almost never find them in archeological excavations, given that gold has always been extremely valuable, melted down and reused from generation to generation,” said IAA excavation director Elie Haddad.
“The person who hid this treasure must have expected to retrieve it and even secured the pot with a nail so that it would not move. We can only guess what prevented him from returning to collect this treasure,” Elie said.
The two pounds of gold, would, by weight alone, be worth about $50,000 today. In the 9th century, that would have afforded the owner a rich life. “For example, with such a sum, a person could buy an expensive house in one of the best neighborhoods in Fustat, the big, wealthy capital of Egypt in those days,” Kool says.
8.Why does the IAA get teenagers to do archeological digs?
A.To prepare them for future archeology.
B.To let them get some work experience.
C.To give them a chance to make some money.
D.To help them learn more about their country.
9.What can be inferred about the Abbasid Caliphate from the text?
    A.It had a large population.
    B.It lasted for 1,100 years.
C.It used more gold than copper.
D.It did business with other countries.
10.What can we learn about the gold coins?
    A.They are large in number.
B.They are mainly full gold coins.
    C.They were made in Constantinople.
D.They were buried by an Egyptian.
11.What does the underlined word “retrieve” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A.Hide away. B.Get back.
    C.Return. D.Save.

China’s Tianwen 1 Mars probe(探测器)conducted its fourth orbital correction on Friday evening, as the spacecraft makes ready for its arrival in orbit around Feb. 10, according to the China National Space Administration(CNSA).
The name comes from the long poem Tianwen, meaning Heavenly Questions or Questions to Heaven, written by Qu Yuan, one of the greatest poets of ancient China. In Tianwen, this name conveys the Chinese nation’s steady effort in pursuing truth and culture of exploring nature and the universe. CNSA also unveiled(展示)the logo of China’s planetary exploration missions, featuring the letter C, signifying China, international cooperation and capacity of entering space.
Tianwen 1 has flown for 197 days and more than 465 million kilometers on its journey to the planet. It is now around 184 million km from Earth and 1.1 million km from Mars. Depending on the two planets’ orbits, Mars is between 55 and 400 million km from Earth. Mars probe Tianwen 1 was seen in its first selfies in space on Oct. 1, 2020. The administration also published a black-and-white picture of Mars taken by Tianwen 1, the first snapshot(快照)from the Chinese craft.
Tianwen 1, the country’s first independent Mars mission, was launched by a Long March 5 heavy-lift carrier rocket on July 23 from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center in Hainan province, kicking off the nation’s planetary exploration program.
A successful landing would make China only the second nation to place a spacecraft on the Martian planet. China would also be the first to successfully orbit, land and deploy(部署)a vehicle in the same mission. According to experts, searching for signs of life on Mars will be the first and foremost scientific goal. China is open and inclusive in the development of its space technology not least because it believes that the exploration of outer space should help build a community with a shared future for mankind.

Many of us spent our childhoods dreaming of becoming astronauts. However, the hard reality is that only a select few will make it. 16 Not necessarily.
In fact, some of the space jobs are not only for astronauts and they all sound just as cool. One of the most interesting space jobs that you may have never heard of is “chief sniffer(嗅探员)”. NASA has already hired a chief sniffer named George Aldrich, whose job is to smell materials before they are used in spacecrafts.
17 A spacecraft is of limited size and has relatively high temperature, which makes smells stronger inside of it. “Once a spacecraft is launched, astronauts have no way of escaping unpleasant smells,” Aldrich told The Telegraph. More importantly, smelling objects can help identify dangerous chemicals that could threaten astronauts’ health.
Another job, the “space tour guide”, may seem a little ahead of its time—after all, what’s the point of hiring a tour guide when there aren’t any tourists there? But now, many private companies are starting to provide space trips, and wealthy space enthusiasts such as Justin Bieber and Sarah Brightman have already signed up for tours. 18
Being a space tour guide requires rich knowledge of astronomy, astrophysics, geography and history to help passengers get the most out of their journey. 19
Astronauts often spend weeks or even months in a small capsule with the same group of people, which is why a “space psychologist” is also needed to help astronauts overcome mental challenges, like feeling bored and lonely.
Rohit Talwar, chief executive of US company Fast Future Research, said, “We’re crossing the boundaries(界限)between science fiction and reality. 20 ”
A.But does that mean you’ll never get the chance to work in space?
B.Modern astronauts become less lonely and helpless when they work as a group.
C.There is almost no possibility that normal people will be able to go space travel.
D.Things we’ve seen in movies in the past are now becoming real career opportunities.
E.Using your nose at work might sound a little strange, but the job is actually very important.
F.It may not be long before space becomes one of the top travel destinations for human beings.
G.Tour guides also need to be excellent storytellers to help experience the amazement of space travel.

It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. The mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.
    Paragraph 1:
The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!”

    Paragraph 2:
Now with some chocolate in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared.

由第三段中的there was trade and cultural exchange between the Byzantine Empire and the Abbasid Caliphate可知,拜占庭帝国和阿拔斯王朝有贸易往来。
Finding gold coins, in such a quantity, is extremely contrary to usual situations. The 425 coins include full gold coins, as well as 270 small gold cuttings. However, special among the collection was a small piece cut from a coin called “gold solidus” made in Constantinople可知,这些收藏品中最特别的是一小块从君士坦丁堡制造的一种叫做“gold solidus”的硬币上切下来的碎片,由此并不能推断出它们全部是在君士坦丁堡制作的,C项错误。 故选A项。
由画线词后的even secured the pot with a nail so that it would not move 和 returning to collect this treasure可知,埋藏宝藏的人有取回这些金币的打算。
财宝 2.date back(to)追溯到
    3.affordable adj.负担得起的 4.given that考虑到 5.secure v.

According to experts, searching for signs of life on Mars will be the first and foremost scientific goal.
A successful landing would make China only the second nation to place a spacecraft on the Martian planet. China would also be the first to successfully orbit, land and deploy(部署)a vehicle in the same mission.

分析 the country’s first independent Mars mission是Tianwen 1的同位语,对其进一步解释说明; kicking off the nation’s planetary exploration program为现在分词短语作结果状语。

故填to experience。

    One possible version:
Travelling on a budget is a fashionable form of travel nowadays. It enables more poor travel-lovers to enjoy travelling.
Compared with traditional travel, travelling on a budget is more convenient and the price of it is very friendly. That means travellers can arrange the schedule freely and enjoy the journey at a lower cost. Inviting as it seems to be, accommodation conditions are often far from satisfactory. What’s more, budget travellers’ safety is worrying. But I still like it very much, because it can provide travellers with chances to develop their problem-solving ability in unexpected situations.
Please remember safety first when you go out for travel!

    Time
    one day
    Place
    at home(a teacher’s family)
    Character
    Ben and his mother
    What
Ben broke his mother’s favourite vase, but he lied about the truth. His mother came up an idea to deal with Ben’s lying.

    Beginning
    Development

    Para. 1
    The mother said,
“This chocolate is a reward for
    your imagination:
    a window-opening cat!”
结合正文第二段倒数第二句“She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying.”,妈妈使用了怎样的方法?
    Para. 2
Now with some chocolate in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared.
    One possible version:
    Paragraph 1:
The mother said,“This chocolate is a reward for your imagination:a window-opening cat!” Hearing her sincere appreciation, Ben flushed, lowered his head and muttered a thank-you. Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate and pressed it into his hand.“This one is for the delicate repair work you did to the broken vase.”She also added that she was moved by how much the boy cherished the family possessions. At these hearty remarks, Ben felt a flow of shame through his veins, and had to duck his head even lower. The mother then calmly encouraged Ben to reward himself with more chocolate for any other merits he had displayed in this event. He did as he was told to, confessing that he was calm when facing the accident.
    Paragraph 2:
Now with some chocolate in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. His palm and forehead sweating, nervousness welled up inside him. After what seemed a long time, he looked up at his mother, admitted that it was not the cat but he that had broken the vase accidentally and asked for punishment. “I’m sorry I lied to you, Mum. Please take back the chocolate.” Feeling so ashamed, Ben couldn’t hold back his tears. He opened his palm wide, ready to return the chocolate. To his surprise, however, his mother placed the whole bag of chocolate in his hand, smiling, “Honesty deserves the best reward, my dear.”
