Washington D.C.is the capital of the United States. It's the center of the national government. It's a busy, working city with a large population. But what is more,Washington is also a city of history and culture.

Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately:the air you breathe.
Previous studies have linked high exposure(暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problems, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke(中风)within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants(污染物)were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure.A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)considers to be of“moderate”( 良好的)quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure.
The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However,it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulations by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.
25.The text mainly discusses the relationship between________.
A.heart problems and air quality
B.heart problems and exercising
C.heart problems and smoking
D.heart problems and fatty food
答案:A 主旨大意题。根据本文主题句——第一段的最后一句可知本文大意是说明空气质量和心脏病发病率之间的关系,选A。

27.What can we learn from the text?
A.Eating fatty food has an immediate effect on your heart.
B.The EPA conducted many studies on air quality.
C.Moderate air quality is more harmful than smoking.
D.Stricter regulations on pollutants should be made.
答案:D 细节理解题。根据文章最后一句So stricter regulations by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.可知本题选D。
28.The author's purpose of writing the text is most likely to________.
A.inform B.persuade

About ten years ago when I was an undergraduate in college in New York,I was working as a practice student(实习生) at my university's Museum of Natural History. One day while I was working at the cash register in the gift shop,I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in wheelchair.
As I looked closer at this girl,I saw that she was seated on her chair.I then realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and the trunk of the human body. She was wearing a little white dress with the patterns of red roses and yellow dots.
As the couple wheeled her up to me I was looking down at the register.I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink(眨眼示意).As I took the money from her grandparents,I looked back at the girl, who was giving me the most beautiful, largest smile I have ever seen.
All of a sudden her handicap was gone and all I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile just melted me and almost instantly gave me a completely new sense of what life is all about.I immediately felt full of hope and confidence. She took me,a poor, unhappy college student, into her world,a world of smiles, love and warmth.
That was ten years ago,but I still remember it clearly as if it happened just yesterday.I'm a successful business person now and whenever I get down and think about the troubles of the world,I think about that little girl and the remarkable lesson about life that she gave me.

Dear brother,
It's several years since you left hometown last time.
Great changes have taken place in the last few years.Do you still remember the area to the east of our county town, which used to be farms and depressions? Now it has been turned into the Economic and Technological Development Zone, where several big new factories and many tall buildings have been set up.Now with some broad roads built, the traffic there becomes very convenient. What's more, a new freeway runs across the area.
What I also want to tell you is that the villages there have been moved away, and the original villagers have moved into new residential areas. Many of them have become workers, working in the new factories.
I'm looking forward to seeing you soon,
Your brother,
Li Hua
