Before you cut off the tags and put on your newest clothing, you may want to make a stop at the washing machine. Although new clothing may look clean and fresh, it could actually be bad for your health.
According to Donald Belstio MD, a professor at Columbia University Medical Center, new clothes do cause some risks of health effects when they are worn without washing. For starters, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Dr Belstio explained that dyes (染料) found on new clothes can hurt the skin. Pre-washing of new clothes will prevent any dyes from doing bad to our skin or other things, like chairs, as New York City doctor Hilary Baldwin, MD, told Real Simple. But there’s more.
Dr Belstio also warns that lice (虱子) can come to you from clothing tried on in the store dressing room, and there are certain illnesses that can be passed along through clothing. Dr Baldwin advises people that it’s especially important to pre-wash pieces like underpants and swimsuits. You may not want to imagine this, but it’s likely that you’re not the first person to try on that new clothing — it’s probably been tried on in the dressing room, and that’s just the first of many cases of possible skin contact (接触).It’s also likely that your clothing came into contact with many people during the producing, shipping, and selling processes. “There’s just no real way of knowing how many hands or other body parts have touched your clothing,” Dr Belstio warns. “Washing your new clothes is a very smart thing to do,” Dr Belstio said. “I’ve seen examples of some strange things, so I don’t take any chances.” To wash new clothes, simply put them in very hot water (if they can stand that temperature — check the tag(标签) first, and hang them to dry. While you prepare your new clothes for their first fashion show, here are other common laundry mistakes you want to avoid …
54. According to Paragraph 2, why should we wash newly-bought clothes?
A. Because they feel better after being washed.
B. Because they usually don’t look clean or fresh.
C. Because we can see if there are dyes in them this way.
D. Because dyes in them should be cleaned first.
55. What does the author mainly want to tell us?
A. We should put new clothes in hot water.
B. We should pay attention to new clothes.
C. We should try to avoid illnesses caused by clothes.
D. We should wash new clothes before wearing them.
56. What would the text most probably talk about next?
A. Some common mistakes that people may make when doing laundry.
B. How we can buy clothes in a correct way.
C. Some ways to wash dirty clothing.
D. Why new clothes should be washed.
C
I would like to talk to you about one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. I was born and raised there and now I visit it from time to time. My family moved to the city, so I only go back to see friends or to camp and fish.
I grew up in a small town called Antonito Co. It is surrounded by mountains. So camping is a big source of happiness in the valley(山谷). There are so many beautiful places to hike.
The town itself is very small. It is said that if you blink (眨眼) when you’re going through it, you’ll miss it. This has some truth in it considering the size of the town. We have one grocery store (杂货店), a tiny post office , and a tiny bank. There are also a few gas stations, bars, some excellent restaurants, a small hospital and of course several schools. However, for clothing and shoes, you have to drive thirty miles to Alamosa to shop there.
Everyone in the town is nice and we all know each other. The crime rate (犯罪率) is zero unless you count some weekend fights that break out because some people drink too much. The classes in school are small, so you get a lot of attention from the teacher.
You’re probably wondering why I don’t live there. Well, I can’t get a job there. A lot of the businesses are family-owned. And they never fire (解雇) their employees (雇工). So the employees work there usually until they retire (退休). Most people have to go to other places to get a job.
57. We can learn from the last paragraph that in the writer’s hometown ___________ .
A. not many job chances are provided B. employees don’t make much money
C. most people live a very hard life D. only the old still live there
58. By the underlined part in paragraph 3, the writer wants to show that the town is ___________.
A. beautiful B. exciting C. small D. safe
59. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Teachers pay more attention to the students because they work hard.
B. It is great fun for the writer to go camping in the valley.
C. It’s common to see some drunken people in the writer’s hometown.
D. The writer moved to the city because he didn’t like his hometown.
60. What is this passage mainly about?
A. A travel guide of the writer’s hometown. B. The scenery of the writer’s hometown.
C. The history of the writer’s hometown. D. An introduction to the writer’s hometown.

Andrew Bereza, 15, keeps a low profile at his school in New Jersey, US, but on the children’s gaming website ROBLOX, he’s the star developer of a game called Two Player Gun Factory Tycoon. The game has attracted nearly 9 million visits and earned him $50,000 (332,000 yuan) since it came out.
In the game, each player builds factories that make the resources needed to buy weapons (武器) to attack other players’ factories.

Coding updates to the game has become a part-time job for Andrew. He spends a couple of hours each school night designing improvements to the game and sends out the updates on weekends.
Meanwhile, he is saving his money to pay for a computer science degree in college.

五、任务型阅读(共15小题,计20分)
(一)阅读下面短文,根据短文内容完成表格中所缺信息,每空一词,(共10小题,每小题1分,计10分)
I always knew that I depended way too much on my phone. But I didn’t know how much, so I decided to do this challenge to find out.
Every morning since I got a smartphone, I’ve used The Weather Channel App to find out what to wear. On the first morning I had to dress without guidance, but thankfully I was able to guess that the day would be cold and foggy by looking out of my window.
I couldn’t tell what time it was. I haven’t worn a watch for more than a year, because my phone showed the time. So I was late for picking up friends who had been on the bus for two hours. I was also late for my part-time job. And even worse, I couldn’t call people to tell them that I was running late.
Getting places was harder, too. I lost my way because I couldn’t use the GPS on my phone. My driving, though, got a lot safer because I no longer had my phone in one hand checking directions while driving with the other.
But the number one trouble was not having my contact list. I forgot to write down my friends’ and family members’ phone numbers before I started the challenge. It was sad to realize that I couldn’t remember my brother’s and my mom’s cell phone numbers. Oh, how I wished to turn on the phone for just a second to look up phone numbers!
Even with all the problems, however, I found peace not worrying about missing a text message or an e-mail.
This challenge was a great learning experience. It surprised me how I’d taken no notice of even the things like remembering phone numbers. We all should take some time to think about how we can depend less on our cell phones.

(二)阅读并回答问题。(共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)
Many Westerners have the assumption (假设) that everyone in China knows how to do kung fu. This is, of course, a silly belief. But it is true that kung fu is a big part of Chinese culture.
Like most people from the West, I was first introduced to kung fu through Hong Kong action films. Stars like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan made kung fu popular in the Western world. The flashy (炫酷的) and impressive performances they gave in films like Rumble In The Bronx (Chan) and Enter The Dragon (Lee) made them household names in the US and elsewhere.
However, my own personal interest in kung fu was actually inspired by a hip-hop group. Wu-Tang Clan (“武当派”), founded in the early 1990s in New York City, is one of the most influential (有影响力的) hip-hop groups in history.
I myself do not practice kung fu. However, the concepts (哲学理念) behind it are quite interesting to me. There is a Bruce Lee quote that I often think of when I’m struggling with challenges in life. “Be formless … shapeless, like water,” he once said. By this, he meant that you should be ready to adapt (调整) and change your attitudes or beliefs when you face difficulties. I think this is a good way to deal with life.
