    .阅读理解

Some of the most attractive pictures to come out of the Alaska earthquake are the photos that show slope(斜坡) failures, in which parts of formerly solid hills caved in, tore or let loose. And if there happened to be a road or building on top of the slopes that failed, the result was horrible.

Slopes can fail without earthquakes, as the result of pouring rain: weathering(风化). But the shaking caused by a quakeparticularly a large one like what occurred near Anchorage on Fridaycan either speed up the process or create entirely new failures that wouldnt have otherwise happened.

Several slope failures were documented in the Anchorage area in the hours after the earthquake Friday, the most interesting of which was on Vine Road southwest of Wasilla. Its as if someone came along with a large destroying ball and dropped it on Vine Road, which wrinkled like a broken egg.

Scientists seemed surprised at how many slope failures occurred as a result of the 7.0-magnitude(震级) quake. The centre of the quake was deep, at 27 miles below the surface a key reason why the damage in Anchorage was relatively light. Such an earthquake would be expected to produce shaking over a large area, but probably with reasonably modest top ground acceleration, Fridays earthquake would certainly be felt, but the surface of Earth wouldnt be moving badly enough to produce widespread landslides.

Photos from Alaska show a lot of lateral(横向的) spread, in which the ground tears open. Whatever is on top of the ground at the place it tears in half is also torn in half afterwards, like highways or buildings. The buildings surrounding the spread are also at risk of damage because of the force of the ground spreading out away from the tear. Theres also documentation of block spread, in which part of the ground breaks off a hill and slides away mostly perfect.

1.What do we know about slope failures?

    A.They may cause earthquakes.

B.They usually happen with a road on top.

    C.They always happen with earthquakes.

D.They may pull parts of the hills apart.

2.What can we infer from paragraph 2?

A.Earthquakes have great effect on slope failures.

B.Most slope failures occur after the pouring rain.

C.Earthquakes result in slope failures immediately.

D.Slope failures occur mainly with large earthquakes.

3.What did the scientists think of the Alaska earthquake Friday?

A.It produced shaking over a large area.

B.It caused fewer slope failures than expected.

C.It wasnt felt for its deep centre.

    D.It didnt produce landslides.

4.In which circumstance can we find the ground slides down a hill almost unbroken?

    A.Landslides.         B.Slope failures.

    C.Lateral spread.   D.Block spread.

    .阅读表达

Thai is a scientist at the University of California. She recently discovered a process that could result in batteries lasting forever.

Thai said she had been annoyed that the batteries for her mobile phone degrade(退化) over time and need charging frequently. So she decided to do something about that problem.

At first, she thought about inventing a new battery. But as she experimented, Thai discovered something that might permit lithium batteries(锂电池) to last forever. Lithium batteries lost the ability to hold a charge. Most of these batteries have a lifespan of about 7,000 charging cycles before they die.

The main reason lithium batteries degrade is their use of nanowires(纳米线) to carry electricity. Nanowires are extremely thin. A human hair is thousands of times thicker, for example. Nanowires are extremely efficient carriers of electricity, which makes them useful in batteries. But Thai said their thinness also makes them weak.“Nanowires break over time,Thai said. Thats why they lose function.”

But Thai had a theory: The nanowires might last longer if covered with the gel(凝胶). She tested her theory.“It was a long process and a lot of work, Thai said. She tried many coverings for the wires. The gel was one of them. The nanowires were coated with the gel and cycled through charges 200,000 times. The gel coated nanowires showed no evidence of damage. The results suggest that batteries could last forever, without losing charging ability.

Thai hopes to understand why the gel works so well and to see if other coverings could create better results. Thai said she was very excited. She hadnt thought that her research could receive so much publicity. Its kind of cool, she said,Im really glad that people are showing interest in my work and not just in the work itself, but also in technology and energy.”

1.What led Thai to make the discovery?(no more than 10 words)

2.Why do nanowires used in lithium batteries break over time?(no more than 6 words)

3.What was the result of Thais experiments?(no more than 10 words)

4.How do you understand the underlined sentence in the last paragraph?(no more than 10 words)

5.What do you think of Thais discovery?Give reasons in your own words. (no more than 20 words)

.1.The batteries for her mobile phone need charging frequently.

    2.Because they are extremely thin.

3.Batteries with the gel coated nanowires could last forever.

4.She never expected her research to be widely concerned.

5.I think Thais discovery is very important because it might permit lithium batteries to last forever.
