She is the new Waterstones children's laureate. A laureate is someone who receives an award for some kind of honor. Cowell will be laureate for two years. She plans to share the magic of books. Cowell wrote stories about Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless. She has sold more than 11 million books around the world. The stories have also been made into movies. The reading group BookTrust runs the laureate program in the United Kingdom. The program is supported by Waterstones, which sells books. The program began 20 years ago. Every two years, it honors a children's writer or illustrator. Big Plans For Books The laureate medal was presented to Cowell on July 9. She shared plans for her time as laureate. Cowell told the crowd in London, England, that she had two main messages. The first was that “books and reading are magic”. The second was that this magic must be open to everyone.   She also talked about some worries. Bookshops and libraries are closing and children are spending more time on screens, which are great challenges for her. “Everywhere you look, it's impossible and getting more impossible,” she said. But she added that it is her favorite kind of problem. “Anyone who has read my books will know that I love a quest(探求).” A quest may seem impossible but she will take action. Let Kids Be Creative Some schools in the U.K. do not have libraries. Libraries will be her first work as laureate. She will push for all schools to have libraries. Children should read for the joy of it. “They need books to do that,” she said. Her second task will be to ask for more creative schoolwork. Last year, she started the Free Writing Friday project. She asked teachers to let children have 15 minutes every Friday to write in a book. They write whatever they want. She wants to expand the project. The project got a good response from teachers and children. “They are taking tests and worrying about making mistakes,” she said. She is hopeful, though. She is making a plan to offer to schools. They were studying sea turtles in Costa Rica. That is in Central America. One turtle had something sticking out of its nose. It could not breathe. Scientists pulled the object out. It was a plastic straw(吸管). The scientists made sure the turtle was healthy. It went back into the water. They posted a video of the rescue on the Internet. When people saw it, they were shocked. The video motivated Diana Lofflin to start StrawFree.org. The group is in California. Its goal is to make people aware of the harm plastic straws cause to the environment. Lofflin hopes people will find alternatives(替代品) to plastic straws. “Straws are not necessary for enjoying a drink,” she says. “Saying no to a plastic straw is a way to make a difference in the world.” A movement to ban plastic straws is growing. In California, it is illegal for food servers to give straws to customers who don't ask for them. Seattle, Washington, has banned all plastic utensils(餐具). Plastic litter gets into storm drains(雨水管). It washes into rivers and oceans. Fish and other animals eat the plastic. It can kill them. Nancy Wallace works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in Washington, D.C. She says schools should reduce the amount of plastic they use. Kids must do their part, too.Wallace says, “We're pinning our hopes on the next generation to help solve this problem.” Starbucks is banning plastic straws. The company says it will stop handing out plastic straws in all its stores by 2020. With 28,000 stores, that's about 1 billion fewer straws a year. How will you sip your drink?
