When I asked my mom for piano lessons in 2010, we were in the fallout of the recession (经济衰退). She said a polite "No".
That didn’t stop me. I searched for the 1 for a keyboard on the Internet, drew the keys on a piece of paper and 2 it on my desk. I would click notes on an online 3 and "play" them back on my paper one — keeping the __4 they made on the computer in my head. Once my mom saw that I was 5 , she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons.
I still remember the first one. I was 6 by how real the sound of the piano was. I 7 my grade one test after eight lessons. But when I started secondary school, we couldn’t 8 lessons again. I passed grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper.
When I was about 13, my mom said she had a 9 for me; it was an electronic keyboard, bought with 10__ borrowed money. It was the first time I’d played for her.
Later I found the Purcell School for young musicians. The tryouts were 11 . Some of the questions 12 an assessment of the composer or when the music was written. I felt stressed out. To my amazement, I was offered a 13 . At Purcell, I saved enough to buy my first piano.
When I left Purcell, I was awarded the senior academic music prize. I am now at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, one of the world’s leading music schools. I feel proud: it’s been 10 years 14 I drew my paper piano. I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the piano: what we call 15 practice. The paper piano helped solve my curiosity about how music works and what forms the masterpieces.

Then he pulled against the fence’s support pole, which bent 8 and was more likely to recover. But the pole suddenly broke. I laughed out loud this time. This was 9 . He went back to his car. He must be going to leave all the 10 behind for someone else to tidy up. That, I thought, would be the 11 . But he reappeared a few minutes later with some 12 and got to work using them. He fixed the fence, and even improved it.
This man was actually a 13 for me, and my assumptions were all about myself. Years later, I still look out of my window at that 14 . It still looks new. And it makes me 15 what else that man has made better, and how I can make myself more like him.

Afel was only a very small boy when he first saw snow in a picture book. It had lots of pictures of children 1 in big white fields. He asked, "Mum, what are those white fields?" "But there’s no snow here!" people told him. "Where are you going to ski?" Afel 12 them. He made himself a pair of skis from two pieces of wood. He 15 to fly down the hills like the people on TV, but he couldn’t.
    "Never mind," he thought. "It’s a 16 …"
"How will you go to the Olympics?" people asked him. "Our country doesn’t 17 have a team that goes to the Winter Olympics. We have good runners and win lots of medals at the Olympics. But no skiing, no."Afel didn’t 18 .

A family tradition is recreated year after year. It adds to the family 1 , making every family more distinctive. The tradition in my family is 2 in my mother’s kitchen to make various desserts for the New Year. It’s a good time with much joy.
Family traditions 3 family and personal well-being. Families sharing in their traditions provide security for their members, especially children. Children love 4 and consistency; a family tradition provides this. Moreover, it gives them something to 5 . With traditions that are celebrated year after year, family 6 are created and strengthened.
Of course it’s 7 to make some changes in the traditions to 8 the family’s needs. In recent years my family has added time to make 9 with our relatives who work overseas, for their jobs 10 their reunion with us. This gives us all a chance to stay 11 as a family, even if we can’t be together for the holiday 12 .

Every year about 40,000 people attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. They 41 with them lots of waste. The 42 might damage the beauty of the place. The glaciers(冰川) are disappearing, changing the __43 of Kilimanjaro.
Hearing these stories, I’m 44 about the place — other destinations are described as "purer" natural experiences.
However, I soon 45 that much has changed since the days of disturbing reports of 46 among tons of rubbish. I find a 47 mountain, with toilets at camps and along the paths. The environmental challenges are 48__ but the efforts made by the Tanzania National Park Authority seem to be 49 .
The best of a Kilimanjaro 50 , in my opinion, isn’t reaching the top. Mountains are 51 as spiritual places by many cultures. This 52 is especially evident on Kilimanjaro as 53 go through five ecosystems(生态系统) in the space of a few kilometers. At the base is a rainforest. It ends abruptly at 3,000 meters, 54 lands of low growing plants. Further up, the weather 55 — low clouds envelop the mountainsides, which are covered with thick grass. I 56 twelve shades of green from where I stand. Above 4,000 meters is the highland 57 : gravel (砾石), stones and rocks. 58 you climb into an arctic-like zone with 59 snow and the glaciers that may soon disappear.
Does Kilimanjaro 60 its reputation as a crowded mountain with lines of tourists ruining the atmosphere of peace? I found the opposite to be true.

Wildlife has been greatly threatened in the modern age. There are species(物种) that are 36 every day. The white-naped crane is a typical example. So scientists are trying their best to 37 the species from going out of existence.

The two keepers are proud of their productive work. But before they can be 49 , more efforts must be made, because the population of the crane in the wild is on the 50 , and many other species appear headed toward extinction. __51 , not everyone has realized that wildlife has thoughts, feelings, and most importantly, equal rights to survive.

There are lots of ways to raise awareness for a cause. Usually, the 36 the idea is, the more it gets noticed. And that’s precisely why one 37 Frenchman has caught our attention.
Baptiste Dubanchet is biking across Europe, surviving 38 on discarded(丢弃) food. The three-month, 1,900-mile journey from Paris to Warsaw is Dubanchet’s 39 of raising awareness of food waste in Europe and throughout the world.
As you can 40 , the trip is no piece of cake. While restaurants 41 tons of food each year, much of it remains inaccessible because of 42 garbage containers, health regulations, or business policies. For legal 44 , most restaurants have a policy against 45__ food waste."Some people have even 46 their jobs by giving me food," Dubanchet said.
What’s 47 interesting is the attitude various cities have toward Dubanchet’s cause. Berlin has been the 48__ while the most difficult was the Czech town of Pilsen. There, he had to 49 at some 50 different stores or restaurants before finding food. The 50 is all the more serious when you consider the 51 exercise required to bike from France to Poland.
"I have to get food 52 because after all the biking I am tired and I need the 53 ,"Dubanchet explained. "Is my 54 full or empty? That is the most important thing, not what I am eating."
He aims to 55 his journey by mid-July. With any luck, he’ll turn a few more heads in the process.

Detective Ashley Jones works at a police department in England. He has recently made a significant 16 — loneliness is a serious social problem that can contribute to depression and even crimes, but it can be 17 in a clever way. The 18 ? Chat benches.
Jones got the idea after he had talked with an elderly lady who had been cheated of her 19 . The lady would get a call from a stranger every morning who 20 made her believe that he was her friend, and then she lent him about £31,000. Jones was 21 when she said that she didn’t actually 22 being cheated. "Otherwise, I would never speak to another person for weeks on end," she said.
This led Jones to the conclusion that there are too many extremely 23 people in his community, who are easy targets of cheating. So he 24 to do something about it. He __25 the police department to allow him to 26 a couple of "chat benches" in two of their local parks. Then he hung a colorful sign on each of the benches that 27 : "HAPPY TO CHAT". Just a few days after the signs went up, he found people sitting there and engaging in active and 28 conversations.
The idea is catching on 29 . There are now over 40 chat benches throughout England. More new chat benches have sprung up across the UK and beyond. All who participated have gained a(n) 30 outcome from getting involved. Jones’ idea has been fully 31 — the "HAPPY TO CHAT" benches help 32 the invisible social barrier that keeps people from saying hello.
This effort is not just a(n) 33 at being community minded — it’s also a 34 measure. It prevents people who are cut off from society falling victim to cheaters.
The Chat Bench is a fantastic new project that 35 those of all ages to interact and get to know each other in the future.

Regardless of the weather or the distance, Paul Wilson will make sure low-income students in his neighbourhood arrive at their college classes on time.
A retired engineer, 76-year-old Wilson has been 11 free rides to college students for the past eight years. Since he first started 12 his car to the young people, Wilson has 13 an astonishing 64,000 miles, and has had countless pleasant and often humorous 14 with the students he transports to and from school. The students who he’s 15 have gone on to become physicians, teachers and engineers, but what they’ve also got out of their time in school is finding a role model and a friend in Wilson. Some students 16 call him"Grandpa".
Tina Stern 17 rides from Wilson for all her four years in college, and the trips meant much more to her than just free 18 . "It’s not just a ride; you’re not just sitting there in 19 silence or with your headphones on,"Stern said. "He asks you questions and actually 20 the answers, so the next time you ride with him, he’ll 21 those things."
Wilson first worked as a driver through a student-support programme of the non-profit organisation, On Point for College. Although the 22 asks the members only to drive students to and from their classes, Wilson often goes 23_ to ensure the welfare and safety of the students. If they have problems with registration, Wilson is there to 24 them. If they run out of certain daily necessities, Wilson will drive to the nearest store and purchase what’s needed. If a student gets hungry on the long drives to and from school, Wilson never 25 to buy them a meal.
For many students, Wilson’s help is not only appreciated, it’s also entirely 26 for them to be able to complete their college education. Some students don’t have a reliable car, while others have to 27 vehicles with parents who work six days a week. For them, riding with Wilson has 28 them to complete their education — but according to Wilson, he benefits just as much from the 29 . "I just love driving, and I love these kids,"Wilson said. "It’s such a(n) 30 to be a part of these kids’ lives, even just for a few hours, getting to know them and hearing their stories."

I was ready to pay for my bananas at the grocery one night, when fear seized me. My wallet was gone. I could only have left it on the G9 bus, which was now speeding in the dark to some 16 station.
The 17 moment was quickly followed by mental math. How much time and money would it cost to replace the __18 of that little wallet? The credit cards, the driver’s license, the cash, all lost to the bus.
Two hours later, back at my house, I heard a knock on the door. My husband 19 it while I was on the phone in the dining room. "Does Jennifer live here?" I heard a lady say. In my husband’s hand was my wallet, with not a penny __20 . She left before I could 21 make it to the door to offer my thanks.
After sharing the story online, I heard from someone, who 22 the lady as Erin Smith. Without 23 , I called to thank her. She said she 24 my wallet on a bus seat. She 25 that going to a stranger’s house was a 26__ move, but she decided to take the chance. "If I were in that 27 , I would want someone to try to find me," she said.
This one stranger responded beautifully to my small 28 , but she actually wasn’t the only one. Right after Erin __29 my wallet on the bus, she posted a picture of my driver’s license to an online forum(论坛), trying to see 30__ anyone knew me. No sooner did she leave my doorstep than I had emails from two women whose kids go to my son’s nursery and who recognized my face. I’ve never 31 words with those moms beyond small talk, but they wanted to help. I read that people are more divided than ever, but that’s not how the people I 32 tend to act.
33 , I feel happy someone had wanted to help a stranger. Erin had gone 34 what almost anyone would have done, finding my house on a bitterly cold night, and for that I was extremely 35 .

My faith in human nature has never been so great as it was last weekend after our family get-together in the town of Vail.
On Saturday, we all went to the market right in the middle of the town. Near the end, we all 11 at the fountain near the bridge, and the kids waded(蹚水) around in the fountain until we 12 . This is one of the busiest walking streets.
After we returned to the hotel late in the afternoon, my 7-year-old son Ponder 13 that nowhere could he find his backpack, which 14 his Gameboy and his watch. After a thorough 15 , we determined that he must have left it at the fountain.
Ponder has never 16 anything. So we just take for granted that he needs no supervision(指导) for managing his __17 .
He was upset, not about the Gameboy, but about the watch. "But Dad," he said, through massive 18 , "they don’t make that kind of watch anymore." We were all very 19 .
Our dinner reservation was at a restaurant just on the other side of the bridge, so I 20 him that we would not only search the area around the fountain when we went back for dinner, but we would also find the police and ask them if the backpack had been 21 .
As we exited from the parking garage, we could see the fountain as we walked down the long staircase. I saw something black 22 there, but it was right next to a woman standing by the fountain, so I could not 23 what it was or if it was hers.
"See it, Dad?" Ponder shouted. "Don’t get too 24 because that may not be it," I said. But that was it. It had been five or six hours since we left the fountain, and it was 25 there. There was no ID in it, and it looked like someone had looked through it and then set it right out where all could 26 it.
I literally 27 when we reached it and it was his! Everyone in our party was blown away by this "miracle(奇迹)". In my wildest 28 , I would never have imagined that this could happen nowadays.
What a charmed life, eh? I believe this was a perfect 29 for a child in losing something important...to lose it and feel the full 30 of that loss, and then to miraculously get it back.

Being good at something and having a passion for it are not enough. Success 36 fundamentally on our view of ourselves and of the 37 in our lives.
When twelve-year-old John Wilson walked into his chemistry class on a rainy day in 1931, he had no 38 of knowing that his life was to change 39 . The class experiment that day was to 40 how heating a container of water would bring air bubbling(冒泡) to the surface. 41 , the container the teacher gave Wilson to heat 42 held something more volatile(易挥发的) than water. When Wilson heated it, the container 43 , leaving Wilson blinded in both eyes.

He learned braille(盲文)quickly and continued his education at Worcester College for the Blind. There, he not only did well as a student but also became a(n) __47 public speaker.
