Trucker Gerlock traveled hundreds of thousands of miles with his dog, Holly, who came with him on every route—including his last one. While driving near Dallas, Texas, on the job, the 59-year-old Marylander crashed into a concrete column. Gerlock was killed instantly. Looking in the back of the truck, though, rescue drivers found one survivor.
Rescue workers cut the Chesapeake Bay retriever(切萨皮克海湾寻回犬)—practically untouched—out of the back of the truck, where she’d been sleeping. “It’s amazing that anything survived,” Sandy Nordhoff, friend of Gerlock, told The Kent County News.
Unsure what happened to Holly, Gerlock’s friends from his town of Rock Hall, Maryland, made numerous calls and emails to agencies in order to find out where the dog was. Eventually, they found out she had been staying in Dallas Animal Services shelter and a foster family had taken her in for Thanksgiving. The Rock Hall locals hatched a plan to get her home.
Joe Creighton and Sandy’s husband, Russell Nordhoff, both lifelong friends of Gerlock, volunteered to make the 2,800-mile trip from Rock Hall to Dallas and back, which took two days each way. The friends borrowed Gerlock’s pickup truck for the road, so Holly would feel more comfortable on the journey home, according to The Kent County News.
Back in Rock Hall, some of Gerlock’s friends adopted Holly. Ever since, the dog has been a town icon(偶像), making an appearance in almost every town parade.
“The outpouring of love shown towards Gerlock and Holly was heartwarming,” Rock Hall resident Jamie Elburn tells Reader’s Digest. “It shows how the companionship of ‘man’s best friends’ and simple kindness can overcome even the most difficult situation!”

A. The trip was extremely tiring. B. The result was quite satisfying.
C. The survivor was very smart. D. The accident was too serious.
25. What happened to Holly after she was saved?

A. It was painstaking. B. It was full of danger.
C. It turned out to be interesting. D. It required much experience.
27. How did Jamie Elburn feel about the whole story?
A. Sympathetic. B. Grateful. C. Shocked. D. Touched.

While training for a half-marathon last fall, Janet Sherman, 57, started noticing pain in her left foot. A diagnosis of plantar fasciitis(足底筋膜炎)led to shoe inserts and cross-training. Before long, the Wyoming-based teacher was “just good enough” to go back to training, and so she did, although she chose to drop down to a shorter 10K race distance.
On race day, Sherman’s foot began bothering her early, and by a water stop two-thirds of the way through the course, she knew she should drop out. “It was so painful, but I was stubborn and finished out the race.” she said. “Afterward, I could barely walk.”
To the inactive, Sherman’s attitude might be hard to understand. But for amateur athletes and weekend warriors, pushing through pain is a common refrain. “As a society, we are more active in sports than ever before” said Adrienne Langelier, a Texas-based sports psychology consultant. “But at the same time, as a culture we have developed a “no-days off mentality”.
That needs to change, said Mark Cucuzzella, a physician and professor at the West Virginia University School Medicine. “ʻNo pain, no gain’—no, thank you”, he said jokingly. “For too long we have beautified that way of thinking. It’s not sustainable.”
Pressing too hard can lead to injury, illness and exhaustion. With running, for instance, pushing through pain can lead to a secondary injury, said Adam Tenforde of the Spaulding National Running Center at Harvard Medical School. “A stress fracture(骨折), if you continue to run on it, may progress to a full fracture and require a much longer recovery period, for example.” He said. “I advocate for addressing pain early, rather than ignoring it”.
28. From the text, what do we know about Sherman?
A. She gave up training because of pain in her left foot.
B. She insisted on finishing a half-marathon race.
C. She recovered from injury fully to get back to training.
D. She finished out a shorter 10k despite of severe pain.
29. What does underlined word “That” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. It is very common to push through pain while doing sports.
B. We should drop out of training because of pain.
C. More and more people are addicted to sports nowadays.
D. People are bearing greater burden than reasonably supposed.
30. What’s Mark Cucuzzella’s attitude towards “No pain, no gain”?
A. Favorable. B. Neutral. C. Disapproving. D. Uncaring.
31. What did Adam Tenforde advise us to do?
A. Develop a “no days off” mentality.
B. Deal with pain as soon as possible instead of ignoring it.
C. Carry on training regardless of pain.
D. No pain, no gain.
D
Blood donations save lives. But blood can only be stored under refrigeration for up to six weeks. After that, it’s no longer usable for transfusions. Because of that limitation, people have to continually donate blood to meet the needs.
Jonathan Kopechek, a bioengineer from University of Louisville says suspension to regular blood donations due to COVID-19 has put stress on the blood supply, and the pandemic underscores the need for more reliable long-term storage methods.
Good news is that Kopechek’s team has developed a method of preserving blood so it can be stored in a dehydrated(脱水的) state at room temperature. To do so, they turned to a sugar called trehalose(海藻糖), which is a common ingredient in donuts(甜甜圈). Trehalose is intended to help make them look fresh even when they are months old, and you wouldn’t know the difference.
The researchers chose trehalose because, in nature, it’s made by animals like sea monkeys—famous for their ability to survive dehydration. “So these animals can dry out completely for a long time and then be rehydrated and resume normal function. So we wanted to use the trehalose produced by these organisms and apply that to preserving blood cells in a dried state.”
But first, the researchers had to get trehalose into blood cells. To achieve this, they drilled temporary holes in the cell membranes(细胞膜). And they need to have sufficient trehalose on both the inside and the outside of the cell in order to survive the dehydration and rehydration process. At that point, the blood could be dried and made into a powder. “And then we can rehydrate the blood and have it return back to normal.”
Kopechek said the technique could be ready for clinical trials in three to five years. If successful, it could be used to create stores of dried blood in case of future pandemics or natural disasters—and for humanitarian aid work, military operations or even missions to Mars. Maybe first aid kits on Mars will include dried red blood cells.
32. Which has the closest meaning with the underlined word in Paragraph 2?
A. Satisfy. B. Decrease. C. Highlight. D. Influence.
33. What can we learn about trehalose?
A. It can only be found in sea monkeys.
B. It should be preserved in a dried state.
C. It helps to keep donuts fresh and tasty.
D. It contributes to long-term blood storage.
34. Which is the correct order of storing blood with trehalose?
① Drying blood and making it into a powder. ② Getting trehalose into blood cells.
③ Rehydrating the blood. ④ Drilling holes in the cell surface.
A. ④②①③ B. ④①②③ C. ②④①③ D. ②③④①
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Dried blood has a promising prospect. B. Trehalose could help stored blood last.
C. The need for stored blood is on the rise. D. Storing blood longer is very challenging.

The carbon footprint shows how much carbon dioxide a person emits(排放)in everyday life. It measures the amount of fossil (化石) fuels and electricity someone uses up as well as the carbon footprint of the products they buy. When we use our cars or heat our homes with carbon dioxide, various other gases are set free. ____36____
You can measure your carbon footprint by using a calculator that you can find on various websites. ____37____ In America for example, every citizen produces about 28 tons of carbon dioxide and other dangerous gases a year; in Great Britain the amount is about 10 tons.
____38____ The way we travel, for example, has a major effect on our environment. Use your bike or walk for short distances. Public transport is a way of getting to places without putting a burden on the environment. ____39____ Many environmental experts, however, argue that it often saves energy to buy food that is produced naturally in faraway places than consuming food grown locally in greenhouses. In your home you can contribute to saving energy by turning off lights if you don’t need them or by avoiding the use of air conditioners. Recycling plastic glass and paper can also reduce your carbon footprint dramatically.
____40____ Only if we concentrate on reducing carbon emissions together can we hope to make our environment better.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Julia Koch began what was only her second year as a firstgrade teacher in a virtual classroom at Edgewood Elementary School. One September afternoon a few weeks into the school year, she received a call from Cynthia Phillips, who was having technical difficulties with her granddaughter’s tools for online learning.
Koch immediately noticed something was wrong with Phillips. They had spoken many times before, but Koch had never heard Phillips sound quite like this. Her words were so jumbled(混乱)that Koch could barely understand her, though she was able to make out that Phillips had fallen four times that day. Koch called her principal, Charlie, who assured her that he would call and check on Phillips himself.
Just like Koch, Charlie could barely understand Phillips. He suspected she might be having a stroke-he recognized the signs from when his own father had suffered one. Meanwhile, Charlie immediately became concerned that Phillips’s two grand children, ages six and eight, were probably home alone with her. Charlie asked his office manager to send an ambulance to the grandmother’s home. Then he called Mathews and Keytria, two deans in the school district, to tell them what was going on. Both of them dropped everything and drove to the family’s home.
When they pulled up less than ten minutes later, the doctors were treating Phillips while the two girls, looking visibly shaken, were outside with a neighbor. The quick response from Koch and Charlie saved Phillips’s life. She arrived at the hospital in time to get treatment and before chronic damage occurred.

根据第三自然段“Good news is that Kopechek’s team has developed a method of preserving blood so it can be stored in a dehydrated(脱水的) state at room temperature. To do so, they turned to a sugar called trehalose(海藻糖) (好消息是,Kopechek的团队已经开发了一种保存血液的方法,这样它就可以在室温下以脱水状态保存。为了做到这一点,他们转向一种叫做海藻糖的糖)”可知,科学家发现海藻糖有助于血液的长期保存。故选D项。
34. 细节理解题。根据第五自然段内容可知用海藻糖储存血液的顺序是“they drilled temporary holes in the cell membranes (他们在细胞膜上钻了一些临时的洞)”,“have sufficient trehalose on both the inside and the outside of the cell (细胞内外都有足够的海藻糖吗)”,“the blood could be dried and made into a powder (血液可以被干燥成粉末)”和“we can rehydrate the blood and have it return back to normal (我们可以给血液补充水分让它恢复正常)”。故选A项。
36. 前文“When we use our cars or heat our homes with carbon dioxide, various other gases are set free.”(当我们使用汽车或用二氧化碳来取暖时,各种其他气体就释放出来了)中的carbon dioxide和various other gases对应选项C中的These emissions。所以选项C(这些排放会导致大气层变厚和全球变暖)切合文意,是“各种其他气体释放出来”产生的结果。故选C。
37. 根据后文“In America for example, every citizen produces about 28 tons of carbon dioxide and other dangerous gases a year; in Great Britain the amount is about 10 tons.”(例如,在美国,每个公民每年产生约28吨二氧化碳和其他危险气体;在英国,这个数字约为10吨。)可知,碳足迹通常以每年的二氧化碳吨数来衡量,所以选项B(碳足迹通常以每年的二氧化碳吨数来衡量)切合文意。故选B。
38. 根据后文“Use your bike or walk for short distances. Public transport is a way of getting to places without putting a burden on the environment.”(短距离使用自行车或步行。 可知,此处是指减少碳排放量的措施,所以选项E(你可以采取很多行动来减少你的碳排放量。)
39. 根据后文“Many environmental experts, however, argue that it often saves energy to buy food that is produced naturally in faraway places than consuming food grown locally in greenhouses.”(然而,许多环境专家认为,购买远方自然生产的食物往往比消费温室里本地种植的食物更节省能源。) 所以选项G(购买本地食品是另一种限制排放到大气中的方法。)
40. 根据后文“Only if we concentrate on reducing carbon emissions together can we hope to make our environment better.”(只有我们集中精力一起减少碳排放,我们才有希望使我们的环境变得更好。) 所以选项D(说服别人采取和你一样的措施也是至关重要的。)
