Villa Maria College students have been getting their hands dirty cleaning up their local environment.
In partnership with the Drinkable Rivers programme, year 10 students spent a morning clearing weeds and rubbish from Ōtākaro Avon River at the Corfe Reserve, just around the corner from the college.
“The girls understand just how important it is for our precious Ōtākaro Avon River to be clean and healthy, and part of this process is clearing rubbish and weeds from the banks of the river,” director of religious education Thomas Newton said. “The students spent time identifying weeds and removing them from the site, along with any rubbish that had collected there. They then planted carefully selected trees, shrubs and grasses native to the area, that will grow and flourish in years to come.”
Students in all year levels at the college have been participating in the Drinkable Rivers programme, which has included taking samples from the river and analysing these samples to check the health of the water.
“We know the girls are passionate about being sustainable and doing their bit for the environment, and this gives them more knowledge and opportunities to really play an active role in improving the health of Ōtākaro Avon River,” Newton said.
This is education outside of the classroom at its best. The girls are learning about native and non-native species, understanding what plants are appropriate for the environment and putting in the hard work to greatly improve that section of the river. It’s hoped that the students will share this knowledge with those around them and feel empowered to continue this good work in their own community.
21. Which of the following best describes Villa Maria College students?
A. learned and hardworking. B. modest and enthusiastic.
C. caring and active. D. considerate and determined.
22. What can we learn about the Drinkable Rivers programme from the text?
A. Only year 10 students participate in the programme.
B. The programme benefits students as well as the river.
C. The programme focuses on rubbish and weeds clearing.
D. The programme is aimed to help the badly polluted Avon river.
23. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Students Doing Their Bit to Make Rivers Drinkable
B. The Education outside of the Classroom
C. How to Protect Ōtākaro Avon River
D. No Pains, No Gains
根据第一段“Villa Maria College students have been getting their hands dirty cleaning up their local environment.(维拉玛利亚学院的学生们一直在清理当地的环境。)” A.
根据最后一段第二句“The girls are learning about native and non-native species, understanding what plants are appropriate for the environment and putting in the hard work to greatly improve that section of the river.(女孩们正在学习本地和非本地物种,了解什么植物适合环境,并投入艰苦的工作,以极大地改善这一河段。)”可知这个项目既拓展了学生的认知,也保护了河流,根据第四段第一句“Students in all year levels at the college have been participating in the Drinkable Rivers programme(该学院各年级的学生都参加了“可饮用河流”方案)”可知A项错误;根据第四段后半部分“which has included taking samples from the river and analysing these samples to check the health of the water.(其中包括从河流中采集样本,并分析这些样本以检查水的健康状况。)”
根据第一段“Villa Maria College students have been getting their hands dirty cleaning up their local environment.(维拉玛利亚学院的学生们一直在清理当地的环境。)” 故选A。

If there is one thing in life that we could choose not to experience, it is the death of someone we love. Losing a friend or family member is heartbreaking and hard to accept, but how we deal with it, and how we “move on”, varies from person to person.
Death is inevitable, but sometimes we feel the passing of a loved one has come too soon. Our first reaction is to grieve, and even though we may soon be encouraged to let go, the grieving can last a while. But grief is a very natural, human response to loss and can take the form of many unexpected emotions, from shock to guilt, anger and disbelief.
When someone dies, we may be tempted to put on a brave face and hide our feelings. But experts say that this doesn’t help. Instead it is better to talk about feelings – even cry and sob and show people you are suffering. There’s nothing wrong with trying to keep the memory of the deceased alive. You can talk to them in your head, write them a letter or share memories with other people who knew them.
Some people have chosen to make a more permanent reminder of someone by getting a memorial tattoo. In this way they believe they can have a continuing bond with the dead. So this is also a very important way for people to come to terms that someone’s left.
Whatever approach you take to grieving and to keeping someone’s memory alive, eventually the physical aching and pain caused by the loss of a loved one will subside. But the memories of that person and the times we shared can stay with us forever, and talking about them and expressing your feelings is all part of the healing process.
24. What does the underlined word “subside” in Para5 mean?
A. Decrease. B. Appear. C. Calm. D. Promise.
25. What is our first and natural reaction to the loss of a loved one according to the text?
A. We hide ourselves.
B. We are heartbroken.
C. We become encouraged.
D. We feel it is normal and unavoidable.
26. Which is a better way to relieve grief according to the experts?
A. Talking about our sufferings with friends.
B. Pretending to be brave and hiding our grief.
C. Keeping calm and stay indoors for several days.
D. Taking physical exercises and exhausting ourselves.
27. In the fourth paragraph tattoo is mentioned to ______.
A. compare different ways of relieving grief
B. introduce a latest trend popular with the young
C. present different attitudes towards getting a tattoo
D. show readers an approach to keeping the memory of the dead
由文章最后一段“But the memories of that person and the times we shared can stay with us forever”(但是关于那个人那段时间的记忆却会长久地留在我们心中),根据表示转折意义的并列连词but可知前后句是对比关系,所以上文的“the physical aching and pain caused by the loss of a loved one will subside”(失去挚爱的生理痛苦将会减退消散)句中subside的意思和stay with us forever的意思应该是相反的。 故选A项。
由文章第一段第二句“Losing a friend or family member is heartbreaking and hard to accept”(失去朋友或家人都是令人心痛的,难以接受的。)
由文章第三段第三句“Instead it is better to talk about feelings – even cry and sob and show people you are suffering.”(相反,我们最好去诉说一下内心的感受—甚至放声大哭或者低声啜泣,并且告诉别人你的痛苦。)以及第五句“You can talk to them in your head, write them a letter or share memories with other people who knew them”(你可以向他们诉说,给他们写信或者和相熟的人分享回忆。) 故选A项。
由文章第四段第一句话“Some people have chosen to make a more permanent reminder of someone by getting a memorial tattoo.”(一些人可能会选择纹身,把它当作一个对某个人的永久的记忆提醒。)
C
Fifteen volunteers have emerged from a cave in the southwest of France after spending 40 days without clocks, phones, or sunlight for a human isolation experiment.
The group of eight men and seven women lived in a cave as part of a $1.4 million project called Deep Time, which set out to explore the limits of human adaptability to isolation.
During their time in the cave, the volunteers slept in tents and made their own electricity with a pedal bike since there was no natural light. They also drew water from a well 146 feet below the earth. Since there was no sunlight, the team had to follow their biological clocks to know when to sleep, eat, or do daily tasks. To no one's surprise, they quickly lost their sense of time.
The group had no communication with the outside world and was not able to use phones or other electronic devices. One volunteer, Johan Francois, said he ran 10-kilometer circles in the cave to stay fit. He told reporters he had “instinct urges” to leave the cave.
But other volunteers felt differently, with two-thirds saying they wanted to stay in the cave for longer. “For once in our lives, it was as if we could press pause,” said Marina Lançon, one of seven women in the experiment. However, she admitted it was also great to be outdoors and hear birdsong again.
Scientists monitored the volunteers closely during their time in the cave. They would regularly check the team’s sleeping patterns, social interactions, and cognitive functions via sensors. The volunteers' brain activity was also collected before and after they entered the cave.
28. What’s the purpose of the project “Deep Time”?
A. To explore how people can adapt to complete isolation.
B. To analyse the change of people’s sleeping pattern.
C. To encourage people to chase after natural life.
D. To inform readers of an amusing story.
29. Which statement about the volunteers is true according to the text?
A. They had no communication with one another.
B. They used water to make electricity in the cave.
C. They performed daily tasks based on the sense of time.
D. They couldn’t use phones or other electronic devices for relaxation.
30. What’s Marina Lançon’s attitude to this experience?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive C. Dissatisfied. D. Critical.
根据第二段“The group of eight men and seven women lived in a cave as part of a $1.4 million project called Deep Time, which set out to explore the limits of human adaptability to isolation.(这八名男性和七名女性生活在一个洞穴里,这是一个名为“深度时间”的项目的一部分,该项目耗资140万美元,旨在探索人类对隔离的适应能力的极限)”可知,项目的目的是探索人们如何适应完全的隔离。故选A。
根据第四段中“The group had no communication with the outside world and was not able to use phones or other electronic devices.(该组织与外界没有联系,也不能使用手机或其他电子设备)”可知,D选项“他们不能使用手机或其他电子设备来放松”正确。故选D。
根据倒数第二段中“But other volunteers felt differently, with two-thirds saying they wanted to stay in the cave for longer. “For once in our lives, it was as if we could press pause,” said Marina Lançon, one of seven women in the experiment.(但其他志愿者的感受不同,三分之二的人说他们想在洞穴里待更长时间。“在我们的生活中,就这一次,我们好像可以按下暂停键了,”Marina Lançon说,她是参与实验的七名女性之一)”可推知,Marina Lançon对该实验的态度是积极肯定的,故选B。

第二节 概要写作(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Have you ever made a promise to yourself that you didn’t keep? Commonly, when the new year ticks over, we make resolutions: going to the gym, studying harder or giving up a bad habit. Sadly, not long after we’ve made the promise, we often end up breaking them. But what if you want to create a new good habit? Well, it’s possible, but willpower might not be the only thing you need.
The basic idea of a habit is something we do almost unconsciously. An example of this would be having breakfast or saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Good habits can be part of your daily routine. But if we don’t have those habits, how can we create them? According to a study published by the European Journal of Social Psychology, it takes an average of 66 days to form a new habit. However, relying only on determination may not be the answer.
Questioning why you want something to be the norm(常态) rather than relying on your resolve could be the key. Do you want to lose weight because you want to be healthier or feel more attractive? The issue is, willpower could be subject to your mood – a bad mood may mean you don’t want to do something.
You should also avoid trying to change too much at once – remember that it’s a case of baby steps. Giving up all your favourite foods, going to the gym, and stopping drinking at the same time will probably result in failure rather than sustainable practice. And don’t worry about failing – just start again!
Finally, don’t do things outside your comfort zone. If you hate mushrooms, don’t persevere and try to add them to your diet just to be healthier. Eat something you like! It might not be quick, but if you follow these tips, you may be able to change something for the better or kick a bad habit.
It is hard to stick to our resolutions, which is the same case with forming a good habit. Good habits rely on more than determination. More importantly, we need to consider the reason for our desire for a good habit. Furthermore, to accept gradual change and failures also counts. Additionally, it is not advised to push ourselves out of the comfort zone. Thus, we are likely to develop a good habit.
