It was a rainy November morning. Overcome with anger I knew if I didn’t leave the house soon I would lose my temper with my husband, Joe. As rain came down in sheets, Joe offered to take me to work. I struggled into my jacket, seized my bag and teaching plans and ignored him.

He insisted and reached for his boots. I looked at the piles of newspapers and the dirty dishes sill on the table. “Don’t you have enough to do? I can take care of myself.” I stormed out, not even kissing him good-bye. Joe shouted after me not to take the shortcut.

Joe and I had been eagerly looking forward to our retirement when a heart attack that past spring forced him to leave his job earlier than we had planned. As the medical bills mounted we realized I would have to continue working full-time while Joe stayed home and took over the housework.

The new arrangement was a disaster. Exhausted after a day of full work, all I wanted was a hot home-cooked meal and a good night’s sleep. However, what greeted me at the table was a microwave package. Sometimes he would serve oatmeal（燕麦）for several nights in a row. One night when I dragged myself to bed, I was terrified to discover Joe had turned our white sheets blue. He told me he had found out how to save on water, soap and electricity. He patted his blue trousers and announced proudly washing everything together was just the secret.

Ten minutes later, ignoring Joe s warning, I turned off the main route. I thought it hadn’t rained enough to flood the road, but as I rounded the corner water rushed across my path. After a few feet, the car got stuck. I opened the door and water poured in. I hurriedly closed the door. I couldn’t risk walking in this. Almost 20 minutes passed. The car began to shake. I got frightened to death when I heard three long honks（喇叭声）.

Jenny’s heart beat quickly as she entered the store. She had long dreamed about this moment, but something didn’t feel right about it As she approached a neat pile of Happy Hannah dolls, she pushed away her feelings. She grasped one Happy Hannah dolly.

As Jenny approached the register, the Happy Hannah Show theme song began playing. It was her mobile pone. It was her grandma In one hand she held the Happy Hannah doll and in the other she held the phone on which her grandma was calling. Jenny’s heart was filed with love and appreciation as she thought of her sweet old grandma She put the doll down and picked up the phone call.

“Hi Grandma? I’m going to be a little bit late tonight. I’ve got to drop something off... Yeah, it was good...OK...Alright...I love you too.” Jenny left the store and walked through the melting snow all the way to the other side of the town. She though of her grandma as she rang the bell at 301 West Street.

Early one morning, the mayor dressed himself up and went to a village nearby. He secretly placed a large stone in the middle of the main street and hid a gold coin under the stone. The instant every preparation was done, he hid himself behind a huge maple tree and watched closely, wondering what would happen before long.

The first person down the street was a milkman with his cart. He took no notice of it and the cart violently crashed into the stone, spilling the milk everywhere. “What fool put this stone here?” he shouted loudly. He picked himself up and angrily went away.

After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head and paying no attention to the road. One woman tripped over the stone and her water pot went crashing to the ground. She picked herself up and limped away in tears. Neither she nor her friends thought about moving the stone out of the road.

The mayor watched all day as many people passing to and fro complained about the stone but he found nobody making an attempt to move it and have the road cleared of the obstacle. The mayor was disappointed and even in despair. “Is there no one in this village who feels any responsibility to keep their neighbors from harm?”

One spring morning many years ago, I had been searching for gold along Coho Creek on southeastern Alaska’s Kuprean of Island, and as I emerged from a forest of spruce(云杉)and hemlock tree, I froze in my tracks. No more than 20 paces in the bog(沼泽)was a huge Alaskan timber wolf - caught in one of Trapper George’s traps.

Old George had died the previous week of a heart attack, so the wolf was lucky. Confused and frightened at my approach, the wolf backed away. Then I noticed something else: It was a female, and her teats were full of milk. Somewhere there was a den of hungry pups(小狼)waiting for their mother.

From her appearance, I guessed that she had been trapped only a few days. That meant her pups were probably still alive. But I suspected that if I tried to release the wolf, she would turn aggressive and try to tear me to pieces.

So I decided to search for her pups instead and began to look for tracks that might lead me to her den. Fortunately, there were still a few remaining of snow. After several moments, I spotted pups’ marks on a trail.

The tracks led a half mile through the forest, then up a slope covered with many rocks. I finally spotted the den at the base of an enormous spruce, There wasn’t a sound inside. Wolf pups are shy and cautious, and I didn’t have much hope of inviting them outside, But I had to try. So I began imitating the high-pitched(声音很尖锐的) sound of a mother wolf calling her young. No response. A few moments later, after I tried another call, four tiny pups appeared. They couldn’t have been more than a few weeks old.

Mrs. Proudfoot was a lonely widow, but was well loved in her neighborhood especially by kids, though she had no kids to call her own.

Once encouraged, Sam disclosed his dilemma. “My friend Barry lost a rare book of school library. It costs 150 dollars, but he has only 55 dollars and his poor parents can’t afford to pay the rest. Barry is working part time but that’s far from enough.” With a dramatic sigh he continued, “If he didn’t refund the loss before the end of term, he will be dismissed from final exams. That will ruin his future! I have to help him, whatever it takes. He is my best friend.”

“Don’t worry, Sammy. You want me to pay…”, but Mrs. Proudfoot was interrupted. “No, No, Mrs. Proudfoot. This is not what I came here for. I’ll work for you. Would you favor me to walk your dog please? For 2 dollars a day.” He looked up with begging eyes.

Mrs. Proudfoot clapped her hands in agreement, “That can’t be better! I’ve been worried about Roland lately. He does need some exercise! It’s nice of you to make such an offer.”

Sam thanked her over and over, “I will start tomorrow morning.”
