Trucker Gerlock traveled hundreds of thousands of miles with his dog, Holly, who came with him on every route—including his last one. While driving near Dallas, Texas, on the job, the 59-year-old Marylander crashed into a concrete column. Gerlock was killed instantly. Looking in the back of the truck, though, rescue drivers found one survivor.
Rescue workers cut the Chesapeake Bay retriever(切萨皮克海湾寻回犬)—practically untouched—out of the back of the truck, where she’d been sleeping. “It’s amazing that anything survived,” Sandy Nordhoff, friend of Gerlock, told The Kent County News.
Unsure what happened to Holly, Gerlock’s friends from his town of Rock Hall, Maryland, made numerous calls and emails to agencies in order to find out where the dog was. Eventually, they found out she had been staying in Dallas Animal Services shelter and a foster family had taken her in for Thanksgiving. The Rock Hall locals hatched a plan to get her home.
Joe Creighton and Sandy’s husband, Russell Nordhoff, both lifelong friends of Gerlock, volunteered to make the 2,800-mile trip from Rock Hall to Dallas and back, which took two days each way. The friends borrowed Gerlock’s pickup truck for the road, so Holly would feel more comfortable on the journey home, according to The Kent County News.
Back in Rock Hall, some of Gerlock’s friends adopted Holly. Ever since, the dog has been a town icon(偶像), making an appearance in almost every town parade.
“The outpouring of love shown towards Gerlock and Holly was heartwarming,” Rock Hall resident Jamie Elburn tells Reader’s Digest. “It shows how the companionship of‘man’s best friends’ and simple kindness can overcome even the most difficult situation!”
24. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 indicate?
A. The trip was extremely tiring. B. The result was quite satisfying.
C. The survivor was very smart. D. The accident was too serious.
25. What happened to Holly after she was saved?
A. She was nowhere to be found. B. She was put in an animal shelter.
C. She was sent back home immediately. D. She was adopted by a foster family.
26. What can we infer about the work on getting Holly back home?
A. It was painstaking. B. It was full of danger.
C. It turned out to be interesting. D. It required much experience.
27. How did Jamie Elburn feel about the whole story?
A. Sympathetic. B. Grateful. C. Shocked. D. Touched.

Have you ever had such an experience? When chatting on WeChat, you sent someone a voice message where you thought your voice was clear and moving, but when you heard your own recorded voice, you couldn't help wondering: Is this really my voice? Why is it so ugly?
It’s not your fault. The discomfort we have over hearing our voices in audio recordings is probably due to a mix of physiology (生理学) and psychology.
For one, the sound from an audio recording is transmitted differently to your brain compared with the sound made when you speak. When listening to a recording of your voice, the sound travels through the air and into your ears—what’s referred to as “air conduction”. However, while some of the sound is transmitted through air conduction, much of the sound is internally conducted directly through your head when you speak. Thus, people generally learn their voice as deeper and richer. The recorded voice, in comparison, can sound thinner and higher, which many find annoying.
Another reason why hearing a recording of your voice can be so discomforting is that it really is a new voice—one that exposes a difference between your self-perception and reality. Dr Silke Paulmann, a psychologist at the University of Essex, says, “we sound more high-pitched than what we think we should, which makes us uneasy as it doesn’t meet our internal expectations; our voice plays a massive role in forming our identity and I guess no one likes to realize that you’re not really who you think you are.”
So if the voice in your head criticizes the voice coming out of a recording device, it’s probably your inner critic overreacting—and you’re judging yourself a bit too harshly.
28. What does the author think of the fact that people dislike their recorded voices?
A. Instructive. B. Ridiculous. C. Reasonable. D. Confusing.
29. What does the underlined word “transmitted” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Declared. B. passed. C. guided. D. admitted.
30. What would the author agree about the recorded voice?
A. Scientists can make it meet our expectation.
B. People don’t have to care about its difference.
C. It travels in the air faster than our own sound.
D. It narrows the gap between self-expectation and reality.
31. What problem does the author focus on in the text?
A. How do people chat politely on WeChat?
B. What do the recorded messages contain?
C. How do people change their recorded voice?
D. Why do you hate your own recorded voice?
D
Why don't we have eyes in the back of our heads? There are at least two reasons. Eyes are biologically expensive things to make and rear view (后视) eyes don't fit well into the human evolution (进化).
Even animals, such as rabbits, whose main survival advantage is rear vision, have only the side eyes. Rear vision is not so important. There are other species that have evolved this ability by moving the position of their eyes relative to the rest of their head. Many birds have their eyes positioned towards the side of their head, allowing them a very wide angle of vision and, in the case of some birds such as the woodcock, they are positioned so they can actually achieve 360- degree vision. It is also obvious that spiders, which tend to have many eyes, only have them facing forwards.
Humans, and probably some other animals, do have another adapted sense to make it up. Many experiments showed that sounds behind the head were noticed by a listener more than sounds to the front, especially if a listener was in a dark room. So, our ears can make up for the lack of rear-facing vision. You can look at it another way. Rear vision is useful only if the potential threat is visible. During human evolution, that was most often not the case.
Finally, there is often more than one potential “solution" to a given problem. In many species, the answer to maintaining 360 degree awareness of surrounding danger is to rely on many eyes. Social behavior is common in the animal kingdom and one reason for this is that there is safety in numbers. You might be looking the wrong way when a tiger approaches, but if your teammates raise the alarm this is as effective as having eyes in the back of your head.
32. Why do humans have no rear view eyes?
A. They are bad for human survival.
B. They are replaced by other organs.
C. They are less likely to spot the danger.
D. They are abandoned by natural selection.
33 What is the purpose of paragraph 2?
A. To explain why animals have other functional.
B. To state rear-view eyes aren't a must for survival.
C. To prove rabbits, birds and spiders are very special.
D. To show rear view eyes are against the natural selection,
34. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The visible threat behind the head. B. Sensitive hearing.
C. The Sou sound behind the head. D. Rear vision.
35. Where does the text most likely com from?
A. A travel brochure. B. A fiction.
C. A science magazine. D. A book review.

33. 推理判断题。通读第二段内容,根据关键句“Even animals, such as rabbits, whose main survival advantage is rear vision, have only the side eyes. Rear vision is not so important.”(即使是兔子等主要生存优势是后视的动物,也只有侧眼。
根据画线单词上句“Rear vision is useful only if the potential threat is visible.”(只有在潜在威胁是可以看见的时候,后视才有用。)可知,后视只对脑后发生的可见的威胁是有用的。由此可知,that代指的是“脑后的可见的威胁”,画线词所在句子表示“在人类进化过程中,脑后的可见的威胁的情况并不经常发生。”,“The visible threat behind the head”意为“脑后的可见的威胁”,符合句意。故选A项。
35. 推理判断题。通读全文,结合文章第一段内容“Why don’t we have eyes in the back of our heads? There are at least two reasons.
