Mark: Indeed. Let’s start with the ldest recrded April Fl’s jke, which tk place n the 1st f April, 1698. Sme peple were tld t g t the Twer f Lndn t watch “the washing f the lins”.
Of curse, there were n lins at the Twer f Lndn. This was reprted in a newsletter—similar t tday’s newspapers—n the secnd f April that year. Apparently, this practical jke wrked s well that it was played n visitrs thrughut the 18th and 19th centuries.
Karen: Well, I’d be pretty annyed if smene did that t me. OK, let’s hear the next ne.Mark: OK. This is a practical jke frm 1965. The BBC News Channel invited a university prfessr t talk abut his inventin called “Smellvisin”. Karen: Smell -- what?
Mark: Smellvisin! This was a type f machine that allwed smells t be carried ver the airwaves. During the interview, the BBC shwed images f peple actually smelling a TV screen! Karen: But I dn’t get it… Hw n earth did peple actually believe that there was such a thing as “Smellvisin”?
Mark: The prfessr did a demnstratin. He placed cffee beans and nins inside the Smellvisin and asked peple watching the prgram at hme t phne him if they culd smell anything. And peple did! Sme really believed they culd smell cffee beans and nins. Sme even said that the nins make their eyes water!
Karen: I see... I guess yu can cnvince yurself f anything if yu really want t. Mark: Indeed! Nw, my favrite ne. The “spaghetti tree” jke.Karen: Oh, I knw it! It’s a gd ne!
