I was very sad because my life had been severely disrupted and I was sure Christmas would never come. I was eight years old, but in the past few months, I had aged greatly.
Everyone was sad and desperate because of what had happened earlier in the year, in April, when the army attacked our village and took all the young boys and girls away. Families were separated and some were murdered. We were forced to work and march for many miles without food. The soldiers burned everything in our village and during our forced march we lost all sense of time and place.
During one rainy night we were miraculously able to get away from the soldiers and made our way back to our burned-out village. Most of us were sick, exhausted, and depressed. Most of the members of our families were nowhere to be found. We had no idea what day or time it was. This was the situation until my grandmother noticed the reddish and yellow flower we called, “Fire on the Mountain”. It was blooming in the middle of the marketplace where it had stood and bloomed for generations at Christmas time. For some reason it had survived the fire. Grandmother told us it was almost Christmas because the flower was blooming. As far as she could remember, this only occurred at Christmas time.
Suddenly, we heard the horn of several cars approaching our village. At first, we thought they were cars full of men with machine guns, so we hid in the forest. To our surprise, those people were just ordinary travelers on their way to their villages miles away to celebrate Christmas with family and friends.
They were shocked and horrified at the suffering and the destruction all around us. They told us it really was Christmas Eve. They shared the little food they had with us. They even helped us build a fire to keep us warm. We were not alone anymore. Christmas came to our village that night.
24.What did the army do?
A. They set fire to the village.
B. They robbed the village of food.
C. They took all the villagers away.
D. They forced the villagers to forget time.
25.What do you know about the flower in Paragraph 3?
A .It was saved by Grandmother.
B. It was common on mountains.
C. It showed the coming of Christmas.
D. It had bloomed long before we returned.
26.Why did the travelers come to our village?
A. To bring us food.
B. To visit their friends here.
C. To transport machine guns.
D. To go home through our village.
27.How did the author feel at the end of the story?
A. Warm and hopeful.
B. Amazed and excited.
C. Grateful and inspired.
D .Merry and peaceful.

Mr. Pagano is watching a video of a polar bear swimming after a seal. The seal escapes! The bear meets another bear. They sniff at each other and then go separate ways. What makes this video so unusual is that it's from the point of view of the polar bear. A camera was previously put around the bear's neck by Mr. Pagano’s research team with the aim to find out what polar bears will need to survive in their changing habitat.
According to scientists, polar bears are endangered because of Earth's warming climate, which is shrinking the ice pack that floats on the Arctic Ocean. The ice pack goes through a yearly cycle. In the fall and winter, the ice pack grows southward, stretching toward North America, Asia, and Europe. By the end of winter, the ice pack lies over shallower waters near land, where seals live. The polar bears hunt along the edge of that ice, eating seals in the spring and early summer before the ice over shallow waters melts. It's how the bears fatten up for the next winter.
In the past few decades, the ice pack has started to grow later in the fall. As a result, it isn't as thick and starts to melt and break up earlier in the spring. That gives the bears less sea ice for hunting and forces some of them to swim farther to move between land and ice habitats. Studies show that, in places where the ice has been breaking up earlier for decades, the number of bears is going down, and their overall health is getting worse. Scientists want to know if bears are still finding enough to eat and how far they have to travel, or swim, to find food.
Using the GPS collars, the researchers confirmed that some bears are swimming long distances. Of 52 bears,20 took a total of 50 long-distance swims, each one a journey of more than 30 miles. Are the long-distance travels harming their chances for survival? If polar bears are going to survive in the warming Arctic, humans may need to act right now. With the work of scientists like Mr. Pagano, silver linings will finally cut open the darkness.
28.What probably is Mr. Pagano?
A. A climate scientist. B.A zoologist.
C.A GPS engineer. D. An ice observer.
29.The video is special because
A. it is made by professional animal researchers
B. its aim is to trace bear behaviors in North Pole
C. it is filmed by a camera attached to a polar bear
D. it uses hi-tech GPS to study polar bears' habitats
30.What makes polar bears in the Arctic endangered?
A. The shrinking shallow waters.
B. The decreasing number of seals.
C. The long-distance travels for habitats.
D. The changed yearly cycle of ice packs.
31.According to the author, Mr. Pagano's research is
A. hopeful B. limited C. complete D. questionable
D
Late last year, a French company called Carmat received approval in Europe for its total artificial (人工的)heart. It’s exactly what it sounds like;a heart made of synthetic(合成的)and biological materials intended for implantation into people who need heart transplants. Now, just half a year later, the first US patient has received one of the Carmat artificial hearts(CAH).
The transplant took place last week in a 39-year-old man at Duke University Hospital in North Carolina. The man didn't go to the hospital expecting to have a heart transplant, but it ended up saving his life.
After experiencing unexpected heart failure, he was diagnosed with advanced coronary artery disease and went in for bypass surgery(搭桥手术).
When his condition quickly worsened, his medical team realized bypass surgery wasn't going to do it, but by that point a traditional heart transplant had become too risky. The patient was in the right place, because not just any transplant center could have implanted an artificial heart.
The device weighs 900 grams, or just under 2 pounds (about three times the weight of the average human heart). The external setup is a bit heavier; recipients will have to carry about nine pounds of equipment, including a controller, a bag of actuator fluid, and two battery packs. In the case of the Duke patient, his artificial heart will stay remotely connected to the hospital's system so that his doctors can monitor it and be sure it's functioning as it should.
Just days after the US transplant, a similar transplant took place in Naples ,Italy, marking Carmat's first commercial sale of the heart(the difference being that this patient's transplant was planned, not done as part of a trial).
32.What did the 39-year-old patient go to hospital expecting to have?
A.A heart failure. B.A heart transplant.
C.A physical exam. D.A bypass surgery.
33.Why was the patient in the right place?
A. Because that hospital had something to save his life.
B. Because there were the best doctors in that hospital.
C. Because he knew his medical team well enough.
D. Because he wanted an artificial heart.
34.What does the underlined word “recipients” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Doctors. B. Patients. C. Researchers. D. Nurses.
35.Which of the following can be the best title?
A.CAH Transplanted into First US Patient B. Carmat Received Approval in Europe
C .First Commercial Sale of CAH D. Man Saved by CAH

I was finally going to see Giant Rock with my brothers and Dad. I’d been snowshoeing before, and 1 liked the adventure of hiking through deep snow alongside wild-animal tracks. After putting on our snowshoes, we studied the map. Dad said, “We start here on the red trail, and then we turn left onto the purple one. That’s where Giant Rock is. Remember to stick together, guys!”
The trail ran uphill alongside a stone wall. It was easy to follow because red markers were nailed to the trees and the snow had been packed down by other hikers. Half way up the hill, we turned onto the winding purple trail. We settled into a rhythm, with Dad and everyone else in front and me in the back, crunch-crunching through the snow. The late afternoon sun felt warm, although it was already sinking lower. I saw lots of animal tracks-mostly deer, squirrel, and rabbit prints, which I recognized from my field guide.
An hour later, we topped the hill and saw the massive rock sitting alone in the forest. “It is really huge, as big as a house!” my brother Josh said, gazing up. Breathlessly standing in the rock's giant shadow, I noticed the sun had dipped even lower.
“Let's head back,” Dad said.
I was a little behind the group when I noticed a set of animal tracks I didn't recognize. They were hard to see among the snowshoe prints, so I followed them off the trail for a closer look. There were no claw marks, which meant they didn't belong to a dog or a fox. Instead, they looked like tiny handprints and footprints."Must be a raccoon(浣熊),” I thought, matching them to prints in my guide.
I looked up when I suddenly realized how quiet it had gotten. I was totally alone. “Hey!" I shouted. "Where is everyone?" nothing. Just the sound of my own breathing. “They couldn't have gone far. I'll catch up to them if I hurry," I thought, stepping back onto the trail. The light had grown darker by the second. Without flashlight and phone, I began running.

I came to where I could turn right or go straight.
