When the COVID-19 hit and supermarket shelves were empty, Chris Hall and Stefanny Lowey decided they no longer wanted to rely on others for food. The couple, who live on Pender Island in British Columbia, Canada, decided to start a year-long challenge where they wouldn't buy a single thing to eat. Instead, they would grow, raise or catch everything—right down to sugar, salt and flour. Now, five months in, they say the challenge has changed their lives.
Chris, 38, said, “It has always been something that we have wanted to do. We have had a garden and grown vegetables for a long time already. When the COVID-19 hit, it gave us that extra push that we needed to do it. We were both out of work when we started, and with the reality check of grocery stores running out of items, it gave us even more motivation to see if we could look after ourselves.”
The pair spent the months before building a house for chickens, ducks and turkey as well as studying as much as possible to figure out where they would get all the things they needed. Chris adds, “We had to learn so many new things like how to grow mushrooms, process our Stevia plants, and harvest salt from the ocean. We spent a lot of time reading and studying online to figure out all the things we were going to need to do.”
Now after two months, they both feel it's been going well but Chris admits the first few weeks were difficult. “The first three weeks were very challenging as our bodies adjusted to cutting out coffee, wine and sugar all on the same day,” he says. “After three weeks, our energy levels balanced out and our wishes reduced and now we feel great.” Now February has ended. As they come through winter, they feel positive about continuing with this way of living, with their challenge officially ending in November.
    4. Why did the pair decide to produce foods on their own?
    A. They were isolated by Pender Island.
    B. They could hardly buy them in shops.
    C. They believed it's good for their health.
    D. They couldn't afford to buy them because they were out of work.
    5. Which words can best describe the couple?
    A. Rich and generous. B. Helpful and positive.
    C. Optimistic and self-dependent. D. Motivated and kind.
    6. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
    A. Everything went smoothly all the time.
    B. They had difficulty because they wanted more.
    C. They were discouraged by the difficulty at first.
    D. Their challenge may last about eleven months in total.
    7. In which column may you read such a passage?
    A. Sports. B. Agriculture.
    C. Lifestyle. D. Business.
B 5. C 6. D 7. C

The town of Paradise has suffered a camp fire, which lasted 17 days and caused a damage of $16. 5 billion. As a result, the beautifully named place lost its beauty.
Shane Grammer, a creative director for Disney's theme parks in Los Angeles, paid close attention to the news of the fire. He felt quite helpless when seeing the pictures shared by his childhood friend Shane Edwards in the town, in which Shane photographed his white chimney, the only part of his house left after the fire.
"I've got to paint that chimney," he said to Inside Edition. "I'm not trying to say anything. And it was an opportunity for me to express and be an artist, wasn't it?"
Grammer spent three hours spray-painting the image of a woman on the chimney, which is strikingly mysterious black and white, in the ruins. Perhaps it serves as a reminder of the beauty of life or just life itself. Then Grammer put the picture on Instagram. On seeing it, the victims of the fire could not contain themselves." Beautiful and impressive," one of them commented. And another said," You bring beauty and hope."
At this time, Grammer became aware that something deeper had been transformed by a purely artistic expression. "When the first mural moved so many people, I knew I had to come back up," he said to KRCR-TV. Grammer returned to Paradise eight times in three months, during which he completed 17 paintings of victims and other figures.
Today, Grammer's efforts have developed into a movement. He has also painted murals in dark places that seriously need some light around the world.
Ironically, the first painting, on the chimney in Paradise, existed for just several months, since the bulldozer is a merciless art critic. But Grammer couldn't be more pleased about it, which means the spirit of Paradise is rising again.
    8. How did Grammer come up with the idea of painting the chimney?
    A. From Disney's theme parks.
    B. From his friend's description of the fire.
    C. After learning about the news of the fire.
    D. By looking at a picture of Shane Edward's remaining chimney after the fire.
    9. What do Grammer's murals mean to people?
    A. They are inspiring. B. They are mysteries.
    C. They are entertaining. D. They are just artistic expressions.
    10. What does the underlined part "something deeper" in Paragraph 5 refer to?
    A. People's words. B. People's inner feelings.
    C. The background situation. D. The meaning of the mural.
    11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
    A. Paradise is recovering from the disaster.
    B. The people in Paradise are all happy now.
    C. Grammer is not happy for the destruction of his mural.
    D. The bulldozer was so cruel that it destroyed Grammer's mural.
D 9. A 10. B 11. A
根据第二段中“He felt quite helpless when seeing the pictures shared by his childhood friend Shane Edwards in the town, in which Shane photographed his white chimney, the only part of his house left after the fire.(当看到在镇上的童年好友Shane Edwards分享的照片时,他感到很无助,在照片中,Shane Edwards为自己的白色烟囱拍照,那是火灾后他房子仅存的一部分)”以及第三段中““I’ve got to paint that chimney,” he said to Inside Edition.(“我得粉刷烟囱,”他对内刊说)”可知,在看到火灾后Shane Edwards剩下的烟囱的照片后,Grammer想到要粉刷烟囱的。
根据第四段中“Then Grammer put the picture on Instagram. On seeing it, the victims of the fire could not contain themselves." Beautiful and impressive," one of them commented. And another said," You bring beauty and hope."(然后Grammer把画放到Instagram上。一看到它,火灾的受害者就忍不住了。其中一位评论道:“美丽而令人难以忘怀。”。另一个说:“你带来了美丽和希望。”)”可推知,火灾的受害者认为Grammer的画美丽,带来了希望,说明Grammer的画具有鼓舞人心的力量。故选A。
根据画线词后文“"When the first mural moved so many people, I knew I had to come back up," he said to KRCR-TV.”
根据最后一段“Ironically, the first painting, on the chimney in Paradise, existed for just several months, since the bulldozer is a merciless art critic. But Grammer couldn't be more pleased about it, which means the spirit of Paradise is rising again.(讽刺的是,第一幅画《天堂里的烟囱》仅仅存在了几个月,因为推土机是一个无情的艺术评论家。但Grammer对此感到无比高兴,这意味着天堂的精神又复活了)”可推知,天堂镇在短时间内从灾难中恢复过来了。故选A。
    D
A national engineering laboratory in Tianjin is the base of the world’s largest and most advanced sound source identification system for commercial use. At first glance, the equipment, known as a sound camera and consisting of a big wheel with a supporting frame, is similar to a mini Ferris wheel that lacks seats and cannot rotate. A closer look at the 5-meter-diameter wheel reveals high-tech features like an array of 144 sensors used to capture, identify and analyze the source of noise on railways. “It is like a sound radar for discovering noise,” said Hu Wenlin, vice head of the National Engineering Laboratory for Noise Control and Reduction at China Railway Design Corporation.
Hu said that the data produced by the machine allows engineers to better understand the sounds generated when a train passes by, such as which part produces the most noise. After analyzing the data, engineers can draw up precise plans to reduce noise and make construction plans accordingly. For example, if a railway passes a residential area with stricter noise abatement requirements, engineers can come up with a plan to minimize noise, usually at greater expense. But if a railway passes a place with more relaxed noise control requirements, designers can make a cheaper plan.
Noise control technologies have been applied to dozens of major railway projects across the country. The sound camera, fully developed in China, is advanced by world standards, said Wang Changjin, the director of the National Engineering Laboratory. Before the sound camera was available, engineers usually used a pole fitted with sensors to collect sound data along railway lines. “It cannot be compared to the technique we are using now, which is far more accurate,” Wang said.
The machine is just one of many innovations developed by the laboratory. It has conducted many research projects on railways, leading to the development of key noise control equipment for high-speed railways and bringing quieter lives to people living near the lines.
    12. What can we know about the sound camera from paragraph 1?
    A. It is invented by Hu Wenlin. B. It is a sound radar in the shape of a wheel.
    C. It is fitted with many sensors to study noise. D. It transforms sound information into images.
    13. What does the underlined word “abatement” probably mean?
    A. Increasing. B. Ranking. C. Reducing. D. Analyzing.
    14. What highlights the sound camera according to paragraph 3?
    A. It is very easy to move. B. It consumes little energy.
    C. It is available for everyone. D. It operates far more accurately.
    15. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Technology Frees People from Noise
    B. Sound Camera Makes Rail Lines Quieter
    C. The Importance of Conducting Sound Research
    D. The Influence of Noise Pollution on People’s Life
C 13. C 14. D 15. B

We use both words and body language to express our thoughts and opinions in our interactions with other people. Words are important. ____16____ The way people stand, hold their arms, and move their hands can also give us information about their feelings.
____17____ The crucial thing is using body language in a way that is appropriate to the culture you are in. For example, making eye contact—looking into someone’s eyes—in some countries is a way to display interest. ____18____ For example, in many Middle Eastern countries, men and women are not socially permitted to make eye contact. In Japan, it may demonstrate respect to look down when talking to an older person.
The gesture for “OK” has different meanings in different cultures. In Japan, someone who witnesses another person employing the gesture might think it means money. In France, a person encountering an identical gesture may interpret it as meaning zero. ____19____
Some body language has many different uses. Perhaps the best example is smiling. A smile can help us get through difficult situations and find friends in a world of strangers. ____20____ We can use a smile to apologize, to greet someone, to ask for help, or to start a conversation. Experts suggest smiling at yourself in the mirror to make yourself feel happier and stronger. And if we are feeling down or lonely, there is nothing better than seeing the smiling face of a good friend.
    A. A smile can break down barriers.
    B. Smile is a kind of attitude to our life.
    C. Body language is a part of nonverbal language.
    D. In other countries, by contrast, eye contact is not always approved of.
    E. Just like spoken language, body language varies from culture to culture.
    F. But we can also learn a lot about what people are thinking by watching their body language.
    G. However, you should avoid making this gesture in Brazil and Germany, as it is not considered polite.
F 17. E 18. D 19. G 20. A
根据后文“The way people stand, hold their arms, and move their hands can also give us information about their feelings.”(人们的站立方式、握臂方式和手部动作也能告诉我们他们的感受。)可知,此处是讲肢体语言也能表达人们的想法和感受,所以选项F(但是我们也可以通过观察人们的肢体语言来了解他们在想什么。)

根据后文“The crucial thing is using body language in a way that is appropriate to the culture you are in. ”(最关键的一点是使用适合你所处文化的肢体语言。)可知,此处是讲肢体语言因文化不同而不同,所以选项E(就像口语一样,肢体语言也因文化的不同而不同。)
根据前文“For example, making eye contact—looking into someone’s eyes—in some countries is a way to display interest.”(例如,眼神交流——看着某人的眼睛——在一些国家是表达兴趣的一种方式。)
根据前文“The gesture for “OK” has different meanings in different cultures.”(“OK”这个手势在不同的文化中有不同的含义。) 前文“In Japan, someone who witnesses another person employing the gesture might think it means money. In France, a person encountering an identical gesture may interpret it as meaning zero. ”(在日本,如果有人看到别人做这个手势,可能会认为这是钱的意思。在法国,一个人遇到同样的手势可能会解释为“零”的意思。)举了几个国家的例子,所以选项G(然而,在巴西和德国你应该避免这样做,因为这被认为是不礼貌的。)
根据前文“Perhaps the best example is smiling. A smile can help us get through difficult situations and find friends in a world of strangers.”(也许最好例子就是微笑。 故选A。

Dear Tom,
On behalf of the Students’ Union, I’m writing to invite you to participate in a labor activity outside the school.
The activity aimed at fueling our passion for labor is scheduled to last approximately three hours. We will gather at the school gate at 8:30 am tomorrow morning and a bus will take us to a nearby farm. Our task includes weeding, watering, applying fertilizers and so on. Hopefully, this experience will help us realize the value of labor and develop a sense of responsibility.
    Looking forward to your participation.
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua
    代表:on behalf of→stand for→represent
    参加:participate in→take part in
    打算,目的:aimed at→be intended for
    聚集:gather→get together
The activity aimed at fueling our passion for labor is scheduled to last approximately three hours.
The activity which is aimed at fueling our passion for labor is scheduled to last approximately three hours.
【点睛】[高分句型1] Hopefully, this experience will help us realize the value of labor and develop a sense of responsibility.
[高分句型2] The activity aimed at fueling our passion for labor is scheduled to last approximately three hours.
Karie double -checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 percent today, she'd win her class' First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand new dictionary. Plus, Ms. McCormack had promised to do a handstand if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She'd spelled honesty, not honestly. She hurriedly erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper.
Ms. McCormack graded the test papers at the break. Meanwhile, Karie sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then,  Ms. McCormack walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat. As if she were an Olympic gymnast, Ms. McCormack's feet flipped in to the air.
“Congratulations, Karie! You did it!” she announced while upside down.
The whole class burst into applause! Ms. McCormack righted herself and presented Karie with her prize. Karie grinned as she read the label on the box :
To Karie Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.
“Everything OK?” Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school. Karie didn't answer. As if by magic, she took out her spelling test paper and prize and showed them to her mother. Mom hugged her, asking her to put the test paper on the fridge so that Dad could see it when he got home.
Karie took another look at the test paper before putting it on the fridge. Her hands stopped in the mid air. She just couldn't believe her own eyes. Honestly?
    YES! H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!
Mom sensed something unusual and asked why. Karie stuffed the test paper into her backpack and explained that she was just too excited. Mom brought her some tea. Yes, a “t” was exactly what she needed.
After drinking a little, Karie plodded down the hall, lost in thought. How could she tell the class she hadn't earned the prize after all? That Ms. McCormack did the handstand for nothing?
    注意:
    1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
    2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
    Para l:
Later Dad came in with excitement.
    Para 2:
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual.
Para l:
Later Dad came in with excitement. “Where's your spelling test, Karie?” Dad asked eagerly. Karie looked away from her father. Anyhow, she reluctantly went to her room and pulled out the test paper. Dad fixed his eyes on the paper, a pleasant smile lifting the corner of his mouth. “I'm proud of you, sweetie. We need to celebrate it tonight.” Karie pretended to be smiling all the time. Meanwhile a sense of guilt rose inside her. Feeling she didn't deserve the prize, she had a sleepless night for the first time in her life.
    Para 2:
The next morning, Karie went to school earlier than usual. Ms. McCormack was unlocking the classroom. “You're an early bird.” Ms. McCormack said. Karie's hands trembled. She handed her teacher the spelling paper and the dictionary. “I can't keep this. I misspelled 'honestly' and you didn't catch it.” For a moment, Ms. McCormack stood quietly reading the label on the dictionary. Then picking up her pen, she crossed out the word “perfect” and wrote “honest” before returning the dictionary to Karie. “Keep this. But for honesty.”
    举动:pull out / hand/ pick up/take out
    看:look away from / fixe one’s eyes on/look at
    去往:go to/come in/get in
    不情愿:reluctantly/unwillingly
    安静:quietly /in silence
Feeling she didn't deserve the prize, she had a sleepless night for the first time in her life.(运用现在分词作状语)
Then picking up her pen, she crossed out the word "perfect" and wrote "honest" before returning the dictionary to Karie.(运用动名词作宾语)
