For many years, we couldn’t talk with the deaf. These deaf people couldn’t use
a spoken language.
But beginning in the 1700s, the deaf were taught a special language. Using this
language, they could share thoughts and ideas with others. The language they used
was a language without sound. It was a sign language.
How did this sign language work? The deaf learned to make certain
movements with their hands, faces and bodies. These movements stood for things
and ideas. People might move their forefingers across their lips. This meant “you
are not telling the truth”. They might tap(轻拍) their chin(下巴) with three fingers.
This meant “my uncle”.
The deaf learned to see a finger alphabet. They used their fingers to make the
letters of the alphabet. In this way, they spelled out words. Some deaf people could
spell out words at a speed of 130 words per minute.
The deaf don’t use the sign language and finger spelling as much as they once
were. Today, the deaf learn to understand others by watching their lips. They also
learn how to speak.
61.The sign language started to be taught about 300 years ago.
62.The deaf spoke with their mouths and learned to make movements with hands
and faces and bodies.
63.The sign language and finger spelling are not used as much as they once were.

Flu season comes every year from October to March. This year has been
especially bad, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(美国疾病控制与预防中心,CDC).
The flu is an illness caused by the influenza virus(流感病毒). It is different
from the common cold in which it can strike suddenly-and it is much more serious
The flu can cause serious dehydration(脱水) and liver damage(肝脏损伤), both of
which can kill people.
The flu is especially dangerous for children and elderly people, since they have
weaker immune systems(免疫系统). As of Feb 24, 114 children in the US had died
from the flu during this flu season, according to a CDC report.
These deaths are not limited to the US. In China, many people die from the flu
each year as well. An elderly man in Beijing died from the flu this season, which
led to wide discussion online. The man’s family didn’t know how serious the flu
was, just like many others who don’t understand the flu very well.
What can you do to keep the flu away? Hygiene(卫生) is important-take a
shower every day and wash your hands often. Do not spend time around people
who have the flu. And if you can, get a flu vaccine(疫苗)—this is a type of special
medicine that can help prevent the flu. All of these things can keep you safe during
flu season.
