On a windy day in early March, Fabian Caruana decides t get away. He drives three hurs west frm his St. Luis apartment t a 2,000-acre field in the cuntryside f Missuri wned by a friend.
At 7 : 30 the next mrning, he heads ut fr an hur-lng run with his training partner, Cristian Chirila. As he's jgging, ifs easy t mistake him fr a sccer player. He has a packed schedule fr the day: a five-mile run, an hur f tennis, half an hur f basket ball, and an hur f swimming.
But Caruana is, in fact, an American grandmaster in chess, the number tw player in the wrld. His training partner, Chirila? A Rmanian grandmaster. And they're ding it all t prepare fr the physical demands f . . . chess? Yes, chess.
It seems t make n sense. Hw culd tw humans一seated fr hurs, with n greater manner than ff and n extending their arms a ft at a time——face physical demands?
In Octber 2018, Plar, a U. S. based cmpany that tracks heart rates, mnitred chess players during a turnament and fund that 21-year-ld Russian grandmaster Mikhail Antipv had burned 560 calries in tw hurs—rughly what Rger Federer bums in an hur f tennis.
Grandmasters in cmpetitin are subjected t cnstant stress. That causes their heart and breathing rates t increase, which frces their bdies t prduce energy.
Meanwhile, players eat less during turnaments, simply because they dn't have the time r the appetite. Stress als leads t disturbed sleep patterns, which in turn cause mre tiredness and can lead t mre weight lss. A brain perating n less sleep, even just ne hur, requires mre energy t stay awake during the chess game.
It all cmbines t prduce an average weight lss f 2 punds a day, r abut 10 t 12 punds ver the curse f a ten-day turnament.
T fight against the stress, sme players have begun t adpt strict fd and fitness methds t increase xygen supply t the brain during turnaments, prevent sugar-related crashes, and sustain their energy. " Physical fitness and brain perfrmance are tied tgether,M Ashley says, a grandmaster and cmmentatr (解说 员).
S back in Missuri, Caruana and Chirila hle up in the dining rm fr six hurs f chess. Afterward, Caruana lks tired. Still, he grabs a handful f nuts and heads ut fr a final hur f tennis befre dinner.
After dinner, he passes n the chclate pudding pie. "N dessert fr me tday,M he says. Last year, Caruana gave up alchl befre the wrld champinship. This time, he has chsen sugar. In his mind, Caruana knws what he has t d: he just needs his bdy t hld up.

A Day with a Packed Schedule

D
D Yu Have Enugh Time?
Experiences are mre likely than material gds t deliver happiness. But the fear f chsing t pursue the wrng experience, and therefre wasting valuable time, is smething many f us feel deeply.
There's smething funny t this—we have mre free time nw, but fr a number f reasns, it desn't feel that way.
In his bk Spending Time, Daniel Hamermesh explains that while ur lifetimes have gtten a bit lnger—13% since 1960—ur spending pwer has increased by 198%. “It makes it difficult t stuff all the things that we want and can nw affrd int ur limited available time t purchase and t enjy them ver ur lifetimes," he writes.
Next, there's ur cell-phne addictin. American adults spend arund 3. 5 hurs n their devices each day, trying t keep up with the emails, scial media updates and 24/7 news. And much f ur time is u cntaminated time”一when we?re ding ne thing but thinking abut smething else. It makes us think we're being prductive, but really it just makes us feel mre wrn ut.
Add t this the ever expanding ptins in tday's experience ecnmy. Think f all the pp-ups, plays, wrkshps and escape rms yu culd g t tnight. N wnder many f us suffer frm what psychlgists call " time famine" . N wnder we're seeing bks abut attaining mre f ur time and letting g f cell phnes, like Jenny Odell’s Hw t D Nthing.
There've been calls t cntrl the attentin ecnmy, but the factrs that make us feel time-pr aren't ging away anytime sn. Tech cmpanies, fr instance, may have built apps t tell yu hw much time yu spend n yur device, but their business mdels rely n yur cntinued use.
As fr me, I have characterized experiences as "rubbish fd" r "superfd”. Rubbish? Spending t much time indrs n Facebk r TV, alne. Superfd? Getting ffline and utside and ding things fr r with thers and staying active.
These experiences require that we actually take time ff—nt easy in a culture attaching s much imprtance t prductivity. But researchers say smetimes it's abut changing ur thughts f leisure activities. Harvard's Anat Keinan has fund a helpful way: we're mre likely t g camping if we acknwledge it will be gd fr ur prductivity at wrk. Similarly, we ften chse ucllectable experiences" that give us a stry t tell, as we like t feel we're accmplishing smething. Keinan has als argued that while we ften feel gd abut urselves by chsing wrk ver leisure, in the lng term we're likely t regret this, feeling we've missed ut n “the pleasures f life".
Time is ur least renewable resurce. It's gd fr us t cnsider if we're using it wisely.
Which f the fllwing statements can best explain “ cntaminated time" in paragraph 4?
Checking emails frequently.
Scanning Twitter while watching TV.
Lking up new wrds in the hmewrk.
Keeping up with the scial-media updates.
Which f the fllwing is NOT a factr that makes us feel time-pr?
Our lifetimes have becme lnger than decades ag.
We're t addicted t ur mbile phnes.
Our spending pwer has sharply increased.
There are an increasing number f things fr us t experience.
44.The underlined wrd "famine'' in paragraph 5 prbably means .
uselessness B. value G. management D. shrtage
45.Accrding t the passage, we shuld .
cut dwn the eating f rubbish fd and enjy superfd mre
experience smething relaxing if it adds t ur wrk perfrmance
make wise use f time by chsing wrk ver leisure activities
use a time-management app t knw hw we spend ur time

Sustainable Fabrics (织物)f the Future
Chsing what t wear can be a difficult prblem, especially if yu5re a fashin victim. Trying t keep up with the latest styles invlves regular visits t the shpping malls and smetimes paying fr expensive designer clthes. But the fashin ften changes. 46
Many stres nw ffer cheap “fast fashin”一lw-price items that cpy the styles f mre expensive designer brands. Envirnmentalists are angered by the amunt f energy invlved in making these clthes and that many f them are made frm nn- recyclable materials. 47
Eleanr Lawrie, a BBC reprter, says that peple in the UK are the wrst in Eurpe fr getting rid f unwanted clthes every year. And she says, " On tp f ften pr labur cnditins fr wrkers, the fashin industry is als respnsible fr 20% f the wrld's waste water, and 10% f carbn emissins (丹F放).”
This is smething the fashin industry is becming mre aware f and has tried t find new crps f bimaterials t replace wasteful fabrics like cttn and leather. Examples include Pinatex, a leather-like material made frm pineapple leaves. It's been used in cllectins by Hug Bss and H&M. 48 It is being used t create fd, packaging and clthes.
49 The current farming practice requires a massive amunt f water and insect killer. Eleanr says, "Abut 15,000 litres f water are required t make ne pair f jeans, while 95% f its material is cttn. " S, buying rganic cttn is a better chice. And there is als Tencel, a natural prduct becming increasingly ppular. It's made by taking cellulse fiber (木质纤维素)frm trees and its prductin is thught t use 95% less water than cttn prcessing.
Prfessr Richard Blackbum frm Leeds Schl f Design tells the BBC that creating sustainable fabrics is nly part f the battle一buying reasnably, buying secnd hand and buying fewer clthes are bviusly the mre envirnmentally friendly chices fr peple. 50 If ne can d that, he is starting t be sustainable.
Cttn is a very resurce-demanding crp t grw.
And there's Mycelium, the rt structure f mushrms.
Every year, a millin tnnes f unwanted fabrics just get thrwn away.
Many f yur clthes will then be left in the back f cupbards gathering dust.
Recycled cttn can cme frm secndhand clthing r frm fabrics' leftvers.
This means the cheap fashinable items will have t be burned r g int landfill.
One shuldn't cnsider buying any item f clthing unless he cmmits t 30 wears.

The basketball game entered the furth quarter. I saw the fcus and determinatin n his face. There was n rm fr self-dubt. He fught back t g ahead by three pints. After he made the basket, his team was able t hang n and stp the ther team frm scring, and wn the game. Nathan's jy n his face, the cheering frm the crwd, the silence n the ther side f the gym——it was a mment that wuld make any parent prud.
As I sat there, my heart bursting with pride, it dawned (领悟)n me that I had taught him determinatin in the face f adversity, and he had just taught me the same lessn. That brief mment f self-dubt and feeling srry fr myself was blwn away by the actins f my sn n the basketball curt.
