Dear Liz,
My stay in Thailand has certainly been fantastic in my life.
Life is busy and exciting. Bangkok is just like any other big city with a population of 10 million and heavy traffic. I'm very lucky because my host family is in a nice quiet area outside the city. There are Mr and Mrs Phairat, their son Sanan, who is 18,the daughter Chin-da, who is 16,and grandpa and grandma.
I go to an international school with Sanan and Chinda. The school teaches about 70 percent in English, and 30 percent in Thai. I've learned some spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favourite. I'm learning all about Thai food and culture. People don't use chopsticks here, but spoons and forks. When I come back, I'm going to cook you a real Thai meal.
Last weekend we visited some temples. We also drove to Pattaya beach near Bangkok. I thought it was great. But Sanan and Chinda say that next month they're taking me to Phuket Island. The beaches there are even more beautiful. The month after next, we're going to travel to Mr Phairat's hometown in the north of Thailand. The Phairats own land there, and they have two elephants. I'm going to ride those elephants-and even wash them. Sanan and Chinda say it's really fun.
I'm amazed by everything in this country, especial-ly by the elephants. Elephants are an important part of Thai culture and way of life. They have been a tradi-tional symbol of Thailand for many years in times of war and peace. In the seventh century, a Thai king trained 20,000 elephants for battle(战斗).
I'll tell you all about my Thai boxing(拳击)les-sons next time I write.
Yours,
Mandy

Why do we like drinking water from plastic bottles? Some people think it is healthy and clean. Other drink bottled water because it's easy-you can carry around with you. In hot countries, like Greece, we often buy bottles of cold water in summer.
However, making lots of plastics is not a good idea for many reasons. First of all, we need a lot of oil for plastic products. We usually use oil as a source(来源) of energy. If we reduced the number of bottles w made, we wouldn't need so much oil. Plastic bottles also pollute the environment. If we recycled all our plastic bottles, we wouldn't need so much space for rubbish dumps(垃圾桶).But in Greece,we don't recycle much of the plastic we use. Last year,Greeks(希腊人)recycled only about 10% of plastic waste. The rest became Rubbish on land and in rivers and seas. So next time you want to throw away a plastic bottle in the litter bin, stop and think. If you recycled it, you would help the environment. But what can you do when there isn't a recycling bin around you? Well, there are lots of useful ways that you can use your bottles again. For example, an empty bottle makes a great piggy bank for your pocket money, and if you cut a bottle in half, you will have a plant pot. Go green! You can make a difference.

4.Which is the best way to deal with used plastic bottles?
A. To make a piggy bank
B. To recycle them
C. To make a plant pot
D. To drop them into the river
5.The underlined part in this passage tells us“ ”.
A. To make a different life, you'd better go outside
B. To be different, you'd better wear green clothes
C. To go green, you should use plastic products
D. To protect the environment, you can do something

Is Fruit Juice Healthy?
You might think that drinking fruit juice is healthy. But that's not quite true. A recent study published (出版)in US medical journal(期刊)shows that drinking too much juice-even 100-percent natural fruit juice
-will increase your risk of early death.
This is mainly because these drinks have a lot of sugar. According to scientists, drinking too much fruit juice is just like drinking too much soda(汽水)-they both have a lot of sugar. Taking in too much sugar can cause many health problems, such as weight gain, heart disease, and diabetes(糖尿病).Although there are also vitamins and minerals(矿物质)in fruit juice, the a-mount is too small to make up for the harm these drinks do.
In the study,“sugary drinks” were defined(定义) to include both sugar sweetened(添加糖的)drinks like soda and 100-percent natural fruit juice. Scientists found that if people get 10 percent or more of their energy from sugary beverages every day, they will be 44 percent more likely to die from heart disease and 14 percent more likely to die from other diseases.
This is why some cities in the US have increased prices for sugary beverages. This will discourage people from buying them. As Jean Welsh, one of the researchers in the study, told CNN,“ Sugary beverages, whether soft drinks or fruit juices, should be limited.”
But limited by how much? Scientists say kids be-tween 1 and 6 years old should drink less than 170 ml of fruit juice per day. Adults and children older than 6 should not drink more than 230 ml per day.
Did you know?
Does this mean that eating fruit is also unhealthy? Fruit is still fine, as it turns out. When you eat 100 g of fruit, you're getting less sugar than if you drink 100 g of juice because the fruit has lots of fiber(纤维).This fiber is also good for our stomachs. It's better to eat whole fruit and avoid fruit juice, if you can.
1.What will happen if people take in too much sugar every day?
A. They will lose some weight.
B. They might have sleep problems.
C. They will get fewer vitamins.
D. They might die from heart disease.
2. What do some US cities do to get people to drink fewer sugary drinks?
A. They increase the prices for fresh fruit.
B. They close shops that sell sugary drinks.
C. They set higher prices for sugary beverages.
D. They don't allow shops to sell sugary drinks to kids.
3.What does the underlined word “beverages” mean in the third paragraph?
A.糖
B.饮料
C.水果
D.汽水
4.If you don't want to gain weight, which of the following would you choose?
A.A whole fruit.
B. Sugar sweetened drinks.
C.A lot of sugar.
D.100-percent natural fruit juice.
5.What does the story mainly tell us?
A. Fruit juice is a kind of sugary drink.
B. Fruit juice is not as healthy as we think.
C. People take in too much sugar every day.
D. Drinking soda can cause many health problems.

Is there anything more important than health? I don't think so. “Health is the greatest wealth(财富),” wise people say. You can't be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.
If you have a headache, toothache, backache, ear-ache or bad pain in the stomach, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure(血压),I think you should go to the doctor.
The doctor will test your blood pressure, feel your pulse, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs(肺),or have your chest x-rayed(胸片).
After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to followed his advice.
Speaking about doctor's advice, I can't help telling you a funny story.
An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, bad memory and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor checked him and said there was no medicine for his illness. He told his patient(病人)to go to a qui-et place for a month and have a good rest. He also ad-vised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to enjoy life as much as possible. The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again,he shouldn't smoke more than one cigarette(香 烟)a day.
A month later the gentleman came into the doctor's office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.
“But you know, doctor," he said ,“ it's not easy to begin smoking at my age.”

B. he wasn't a healthy man
C. he was feeling worse than before
D. he would be well again
4.From the last sentence of the passage, we learn that the man before the doctor told him not to smoke more than one cigarette a day.
A. was a heavy smoker
B. didn't smoke so much
C. didn't smoke
D. began to learn to smoke
5.Which of the following is not true?
A. The doctor usually tests his/her blood pressure when a person is ill.
B. The man told the doctor he couldn't remember things.
C. The man thanked the doctor.
D. The man didn't follow the doctor's advice.
