One spring morning many years ago, I was on southeastern Alaska’s Kupreanof Island when I saw a huge wolf caught in a trap. From her appearance, I realized it was a mother wolf and that somewhere hungry pups (小崽) were waiting for her. I guessed she had been trapped only a few days. So her pups were probably still alive, hungry, surely no more than a few miles away. But I thought if I released the wolf, she would tear me to pieces.
So I decided to search for her pups instead. Following some footprints, I finally found four tiny pups. One by one, I placed them in a bag and headed back. When the mother wolf spotted me, she stood up, possibly picking up the smell of her young. I released the pups, and they raced to her.
What next? I wondered. The mother wolf was clearly suffering. Yet each time I moved in her direction, she let out a threatening sound.
I put up a shelter for myself and was soon asleep nearby. At dawn, I was awakened by the four pups sniffing at my face and hands. I glanced toward the anxious mother wolf. If I could only win her confidence, I thought. It was her only hope. Over the next few days, I fed her, talked gently with her and played with the pups. But the big animal never took her eyes off me. When I was beginning to lose hope, at dusk on the fifth day, I saw a wagging (摇摆) of her tail. I moved within the length of her chain. She remained still. My heart in my mouth, I slowly placed my hand on the wolf’s injured leg. “OK,” I said, “We’ll have you out of there.” I pressed and the trap sprang open, the wolf pulled free.
Slowly, she headed toward me. She smelled my hands and arms and then began licking (添) my fingers. I was astonished. This went against everything I’d ever heard about wolves. Yet, strangely, it all seemed so natural.
4. What did the writer do after he discovered the mother wolf?
A. He looked for the pups B. He set up a trap.
C. He put the wolf in a bag D. He frightened off the wolf.
5. Why did the writer stay with the wolves for 5 days?
A. To study the habit of the wolves. B. To gain the trust of the mother wolf.
C. To witness the growth of the pups. D. To experience the charm of the wild
6. How did the writer feel when he was trying to remove the trap?
A. Nervous. B. Proud.
C. Relieved. D. Hopeless.
7. The text delivers the message that ______.
A. creatures are born equal B. having comes before giving
C. wagging wolves seldom bite D. kindness deserves acceptance
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. A 7. D

Every festival has its own meaning. Labor Day, for example, celebrates the value of hard work. Thanksgiving is about showing thanks to people around you. And Valentines’ Day is a time when you express love to your loved ones. But somehow it now seems that all festivals we just care about one thing—shopping. And that can be a big problem.
“In a way, over-consumption (过度消费) is the mother of all our environmental problems” Kalle Lasn once told CNN. Lasn is the organizer of Buy Nothing Day, a day set up in Canada in 1992 to fight against unhealthy spending habits, and has now become an international event. It’s held on the day, which is known as Black Fridny—a famous shopping day in the US and Canada.
You can see the irony (讽刺) here.
Even though the idea of Buy Nothing Day was brought up 26 years ago, we seem to need it now more than ever. It’s just as Lasn said, all the different kinds of pollution in our lives today bad air quality, the reduction of forest area, endangered animal species, and plastic bags found in the ocean—seem to be the same cause: over-consumption.
The latest example is the Singles’ Day shopping craze of Nov 1l, which saw a new sales record. But as Nie Li, a campaigner at Greenpeace, told Reuters. “Record-setting over-consumption means record-setting waste. ” And it was reported that last year the Singles’ Day packages left more than 160,000 tons of waste, including plastic and cardboard. The Collins dictionary has also just named “single-use” its Word of the Year, pointing out the problem that there’re too many things we tow out after only using them once.
So, Buy Nothing Day might only be here for one day a year, but it’s not just to remind us to the a break from shopping on that day, but to change our lifestyle completely, focusing on fun “with people we care about” rather than wasting money on useless things.
8. What’s the authors purpose of writing the first paragraph?
A. To express the people's love for all festivals.
B. To talk about the meaning of the festivals.
C. To bring out the topic of the passage.
D. To appreciate the value of the festivals.
9. Why did Kalle Lasn organize Buy Nothing Day?
A. To help people save money. B. To cut the cost for daily life.
C. To set up a new sales record. D. To prevent over-consumption.
10. What's Nie Li’s attitude towards the shopping craze?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Neutral (中立的). D. Unknown.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Buy Nothing Day B. Festivals Around the World
C. Creating a New Lifestyle D. A change in People’s Life
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. A

Running is often tiring and a lot of hard work, but nothing beats the feeling you get after finishing a long workout around the track. But while it’s long been believed that endorphins (脑内啡), chemicals in the body that cause happiness, which are behind the so-called runner's high, a study suggested that there may be more to this phenomenon (现象) than we previously knew.
According to a recent study published by a group of scientists from several German universities, a group of chemicals called endocannabinoids (内源性大麻素) may actually be responsible for this familiar great feeling.
To test this theory, the scientists turned to mice. Both mice and humans release high levels of endorphins and endocannabinoids after exercise, along with many other chemicals. After exercising on running wheels, the mice seemed happy and relaxed and displayed no signs of anxiety. But after being given a drug to block their endorphins, the mice’s behavior didn't seem to change. However, when their endocannabinoids were blocked with a different drug, their runner's high symptoms (症状) seemed to fade.
“The long-held notion of endorphins being responsible for the runner’s high is false. Endorphins are effective pain relievers, but only when it comes to the pain in your body and muscles you feel after working out,” Patrick Lucas Austin wrote on science blog Lifehacker.
Similar studies are yet to be carried out on humans, but it’s already well known that exercise is a highly effective way to get rid of stress or anxiety. The UK's National Health Service even prescribe (开药方) exercise to patients who are suffering from depression. “Being depressed can leave you feeling low in energy, which might put you off being more active. Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and it’s especially useful for people with mild to moderate depression,” it wrote on its website.
It seems like nothing can beat that feeling we get after a good workout, even if we don’t fully understand where it comes from. At least if we're feeling down, we know that all we have to do is put on our running shoes.
12. What did scientists from Germany universities recently discover?
A. Endorphins may contribute to one’s high spirits after running.
B. The runners’ high could be caused by endocannabinoids.
C. The level of endorphins and endocannabinoids could affect one's mood.
D. Working out is a highly effective way to treat depression.
13. Why did scientists give mice drugs in their experiment?
A. To test what influences the level of endocannabinoids released.
B. To see the specific symptoms of the runner's high.
C. To identify what is responsible for the runner’s high.
D. To find what reduces the runner's high symptoms.
14. What does the underlined word “notion” probably mean in Paragraph 4?
A. belief. B. activity. C. effect. D. question.
15. What can we learn according to the UK’s National Health Service?
A. Workouts can help people completely recover from depression.
B. Workouts are the best way to treat depression.
C. Workouts only work for those with depression.
D. Workouts can help ease depression symptoms.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D

Dear Peter,
How is everything going?
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear Peter,
How is everything going? Our school is holding exciting campus ball games and I really can’t wait to share my thoughts about the activity together with you.
This Sunday afternoon, my class took part in a basketball match against Class 4. What a fierce match it was! Our class team did their best but the score was 5 to 8, meaning we still lost the match. However, I think the campus ball games benefit us so much. By doing sports, I can build up our bodies and become healthier. Besides, in the game, I’ve learned team spirit, which I believe is of great value for everyone.
Are there any similar after-school activities held in your school every semester? Could you please tell me something about that in your next letter?
Yours,
Li Hua
