“Where have you been?” Steve cried. Brady stopped directly in front of him and started pushing him back toward the slope they’d just climbed. When Steve still didn’t get it, Brady grabbed the boy’s jeans and pulled harder. The message was clear, but Steve hesitated. Of course he remembered what his uncle had said about Brady saving his life, but that had been a long time ago. Was he still sharp enough to get them through this? Brady pulled again, urgently. “OK, big guy,” Steve decided.
Brady led them back down the slope and into the trees. Several times the big dog stopped to get his escape route. Often he changed direction. How long they’d walked Steve had no idea. He just held onto Brady’s leash with one hand and kept putting one foot in front of the other. He was almost numb when he heard the wonderful sound of rushing water. The river! With a yell the boys ran unsteadily forward until they jumped in cool, running water. “Brady, you did it!”[来源:
Many years earlier, my mother knew that she could not send me to college and pay for it. She worked in a retail store and made just enough to pay the bills and take care of the other children at home. If I wanted to go to college, it was up to me to find out how to get there.
    I found that I qualified for some grants because of the size of our family, my mom’s income and my SAT scores. There was enough to cover school and books, but not enough for room and board. I accepted a job as part of a work-study program. While not attractive, it was one I could do. I washed dishes in the school cafeteria.
Just when I thought I was going to drop out of my college career, an angel appeared. Well, one of those that are on earth, without wings. “I heard that you need some help,” he said. “What do you mean?” I asked, trying to figure out which area of my life he meant. "Financially, to stay in school.” “Well, I make it okay. I just have trouble working all these hours and finding time to study.” “Well, I think I have a way to help you out.”
He went on to explain that his grandparents needed help on the weekends. All that was required of me was cooking meals and helping them get in and out of bed in the morning and evening. The job paid four hundred dollars a month, twice the money I was making washing dishes. Now I would have time to study. I went to meet his grandparents and accepted the job.
My first discovery was his grandmother’s great love of music. She spent hours playing her old, off-key piano. One day, she told me I didn’t have enough fun in my life and took it upon herself to teach me the art. Grandma was impressed with my ability and encouraged me to continue. Weekends in their house became more than just books and cooking, they were filled with the wonderful sounds of the out-of-tune piano and two very out-of-tune singers.

When their inspection had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.
Delight flooded the room. As their mother began giving out gifts, I smiled to myself, wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas spent outside, I had prepared so many gifts for my children and together with my wife I hid them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives and they found all of them. They were happily opening packages constantly thanking considerate Santa Claus for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But I had not received a single one. I knew they had forgotten my existence with my absence from their Christmas these years.

“Hello!” I said, in English. “Can you help us?” I pointed to the wheel.
She stared at it, and then made a gesture to follow her back to the jungle. George and I looked at each other, and then set off after her.
Soon we came to a tent under some trees. It had a firm framework of wooden poles, like the one the woman was carrying, covered with heavy cloth, and fastened with rope made of some kind of loose plant fiber. All round were corn plants. It was harvest time for the grain, and a spade, a fork and other tools were lying on the ground. Nearby were some chicks and a rooster, and a pig tied to a post.
The woman folded back a cloth and invited us in. My eyes had to adjust to the darkness inside. The tent was furnished with a few mats on the floor, and a low table with a teapot. She picked up a photo and showed it to us. Was it her husband? The man in the photo was bare to the waist. He looked much too young. She was probably a widow (寡妇). Maybe her son or her nephew?
Our hostess poured some tea, and watched smiling as we drank.
“Say something,” said George.

See that pile of wood by the barn（谷仓）?I want you to build a fence—an 8-foot-high fence-so I won't need to see his place anymore."
The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and hole-digger and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you." The older brother had to go to the town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get everything ready and then he left.

I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess(放假) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone?” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. “Yes.”
