“If mum finds out that I'm going to the beach, I'll be in big trouble.” I said to myself softly in a low voice.
I went downstairs slowly and tried to walk casually into the kitchen. As I was walking towards the back door, mum asked without looking up from her “dish-washing”, “Where are you going?” I answered back without hesitation,“ I am going to the garden to play.” After I got out of the kitchen, I breathed a sign of relief. My plan had worked out fine so far. I climbed the fence and jumped onto the muddy field next to my house and started running towards the bus stop at top speed.
After half an hour I was at the beach scanning the crowd for my friends, Jimmy and Bobby. Two young men were racing in the canoes (独木舟). After a while, I saw them near a coconut tree. I ran towards them and got into my swimming trunk (游泳裤). For about an hour, we played volleyball happily.
Suddenly, Bobby hit the ball too hard and the ball fell into the sea. Just as Bobby was going to pick up the ball, the tide came in and carried the ball further and further away from the shore. I wanted to show off my swimming skills so I declared to help get the ball for them.
I dived into the water and started swimming at a steady pace. After swimming for about ten minutes, I became tired but when I saw that the ball was only a few feet away from me, I put in an extra burst of speed. However, just as I was going to get the ball, a very strong current swept the ball further away from me. At that moment, a string of weed (海草)tangled (缠绕) up with my feet and I could not swim properly. I struggled to keep afloat but it was no use. “ If I had listened to my parents, this would never have happened,”I thought silently.
    Paragraph 1
Finally, after struggling for a minute or two, I still got pulled underwater.
    ______________________________________________________________________________________

    Paragraph 2
When I woke up, I was in an empty room lying on a bed.

Scout could clearly remember the night she had to leave her home in Poland. It was the beginning of World War II and her family had to escape as soon as possible. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her most prized treasure, a silk scarf. Scout and her best friend, Betty, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they took as a symbol of their friendship. Scout didn’t know she was going to America and would not be returning.
Scout kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Scout was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, "Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see that it’s going to bring both of us luck."And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.
Leaving the interview, Eliza felt confident that she had got the job so she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. Sitting at her table, Eliza felt an elderly woman staring at her for a long time.
"I'm sorry. Do I know you?" Eliza asked.
"I'm sorry, dear, but you remind me of my best friend," the old woman replied. "She looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like yours." Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this woman be Betty, her grandmother's childhood friend?

Rebecca stretched her tired back. “That’s the last seedling(种树苗),Pa. Have we planted enough?”Pa walked to the end of the row of cottonwood seedlings. “No,” he said. “We have to plant trees all the way to that rock over there. We’ll need about twenty more seedlings.”
“I’ll get the seedlings.” offered Rebecca. She longed to cool her feet in the shallow river running through the cotton field. “You’d better let me go, Miss Petticoats,” teased her twin brother, William. “There are dangers all over this prairie(牧场/草原)“You may both go,” said Pa. “But hurry back. I’d like to finish before sundown.”
They went across the shallow river to a sandbar where small cottonwood seedlings grew.Gently, they pulled the seedlings from the sand.“There! That’s twenty, with a few to spare.” said Rebecca.“OK,” said William. He led the way to the riverbank, then stopped.
“Look! There’s the dugout(防空壕)we lived in when we moved here last year.” He pointed to a hole in the grassy river bank.“Come on, let’s go inside.”“No,” Rebecca said, “Pa is waiting. Besides, it’s hard telling what’s in there.”“Then you start back.” said William, handing the seedlings to Rebecca. I’ll catch up.” He ran to the dugout and stepped inside.
Rebecca tied the seedlings into her long apron(围裙)and began to walk. Suddenly she froze in her tracks.A huge prairie rattlesnake(响尾蛇)moved along the river bank.It stopped right in front of the dugout and lay still, coiled up on the warm sunny bank.“William!” Rebecca shouted. “Don’t come out!”
“Huh?” Williams face appeared at a tiny window beside the door of the dugout. Rebecca pointed toward the rattler. William's face paled when he saw the snake blocking the doorway. He turned desperate eyes toward Rebecca, then he glanced behind himself. Rebecca knew what he was thinking: “Were there more snakes waiting in the shadowy corners of the dugout?”
Rebecca’s mind raced, trying to think of a way to get William out of there. An idea poppedinto her head. It was their only hope. It was risky, but it was the only hope.“Don’t move,” she said to William in a soft voice. “When r say NOW, you run out of there as fast as you can.”Rebecca removed the skirt-like petticoat(衬裙)from beneath her dress, then dipped it into the river. She squeezed out some of the water, then climbed to the top of the bank, directly above the  dugout’s opening.

“Treasure is yours to be had at the top of Yonder Mountain,” advised the wise old man as he pointed to a tall mountain in the distance. “You must travel on foot to the top of the mountain. There you will find riches beyond your belief. Once you leave the top of the mountain, whatever remains will be lost forever.”
The young man could hardly wait until the morning when he was to meet with the wise old man for final instructions. When he arrived at thewise old man's home, he saw a long, thick log lying on the ground in front of the house.
“You must carry this log on your journey to the top of the mountain, and it is a necessary part of your journey. Youmust take it with you to the top of the mountain to claim your treasure,”explained the wise old man.
The young man was not pleased with this sudden surprise, but he respected the wise old man and as he lifted the long, heavy log onto his shoulders and struggled down the road towards themountain, he realized that the trip would not be as easy as he thought.
After he was walking for a while, a woodsman cameup to him and said, “It looks like that log is pretty heavy. Would you like meto cut some of it off to make it lighter?”
The young man was exhausted, so he said, “Isuppose that a little bit cut off the end wouldn't hurt.” And the woods man cut two inches off the end.
A while later the young man met a farmer on hisway back from the fields. And the farmer helped him cut two inches off the end.
At the bottom of the mountain, the young man metup with a trapper who helped him cut four more inches off the log.
