When Jayce Crowder was in kindergarten, he began noticing that he looked different from his classmates. They had two hands. But he had only one.
It started when one boy teased him. Jayce was in a bad mood. He'd return home in Des Moines, Iowa, with questions: Why am I different? Why me? Why? “He actually told us that he was mad at looking so different from others," said his mother, Cortney Lewis. “That really hurt him."
Lewis admitted she didn't know what to do at that point. How could she provide answers to her son's questions when she had never found those answers herself?
A few weeks later, Lewis came home from her job and turned on the TV to a news story about Trashaun Willis, an eighth grader from Washington, Iowa. The boy, then 14, had become an Internet star after posting videos of his slam clunks(扣篮),and, like Jayce, he was missing most of his left arm. Lewis called Jayce in. He was shocked, staring at one dunk after another.
At the time, it seemed that watching Trashaun would simply be an inspiring moment for Jayce---he'd see a shining role model with a seemingly similar born disability. And had it stayed just that, Lewis would have been happy. But little did she know that a family friend had already reached out to the Des Moines Register, asking the newspaper to help set up a meeting with Trashaun to build Jayce‘s confidence.
“It reassured me," said Lewis. “I know in my heart that everything's going to be OK. Trashaun has grown up to be a wonderful kid. And I know Jayce is too."
Trashaun did get serious with Jayce. Finally, the boys met at Washington Middle School on a Saturday afternoon a couple of months later, in April 2017, and they instantly bonded.

读后续写 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I received an urgent call from my aunt. "Turn on the TV. Granny's on the Channel 10 news. "It turned out that Granny had made a sandwich run for her office and was stopped at a red light downtown. She had the window rolled down to enjoy the breeze when a man rushed up to the driver's side window, intending to carjack (劫车)her.
Now, what the would-be carjacker couldn't have known was that this woman simply wasn't "a granny". This was Nancy Johnson — the same woman who owned and lived on a Texas cattle farm, drove her own tractors, and dug her own post holes to lay fence. The week before, she had shot a rattlesnake and chopped off its head with a shovel. She was the proud owner of the new minivan (小型货车)she was driving. In other words, she was not your normal kind of granny.
The carjacker leaned into the open window, one hand stuffed in his pocket, and said, "Get out of this car. I have a gun, and I will shoot you.” A statement like that would have terrified anyone else. Instead, Granny saw it as a challenge." If you really had a gun in your pocket, you would've pulled it out and led with that first," she shouted at him, apparently unworried.
She was right. The criminal didn't have a gun. He instead reached into the window, grabbed her, and tried to pull her out of the van. He pulled open the door, wildly catching Granny's arms. Granny leaned her shoulder inside to press the horn (喇叭) and started yelling to make people around notice what was happening. With the door now open, she held tight the steering wheel with one arm and started kicking the man anywhere her foot could make contact. This tall woman had quite a reach.

读后续写 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The tiny village of Sundial never seemed to get very cold. In the ten short years of his life, Andy had only ever seen snow on three occasions. Due to the extreme heat this year, the villagers of Sundial were rather surprised when a snowman walked down from the mountains and into their tiny village.
The snowman wore a thick white coat and a large blue hat over his round head. The villagers stared at the man made of snow. "Is he a monster?" They whispered among themselves, afraid that he would attack them. The snowman, however, just wandered into the library, grabbed some books, and began reading.
Andy, ever a curious boy, walked up to the snowman. "Why are you wearing such thick clothes? Are you cold?" The snowman shook his head. "Want to go play?"Andy asked. The snowman nodded and they spent the day running through the woods, playing hide-and-seek. As the sun set, the snowman waved goodbye to his little friend and left Sundial, passing by Andy`s home on his way back to the mountains.
Andy’s father, the village head, saw the snowman when he looked out of the window at the setting sun. Cold sweat dripped down his face. The following Sunday, he gave the villagers a very different meeting.
The next time the snowman came to the village, the people of Sundial were ready, armed with rocks and torches(火把). The strike was cruel. One of his coal eyes was knocked out, rolling down into the snowfield. As the snowman desperately tried to flee, Andy’s father struck him with a little torch, setting his coat on fire. The melting snowman rolled around, struggling to put out the blazing flames. As his melting body extinguished the flames, the snowman fled the village of Sundial.
"Let him go,"Andy’s father said. "If he’s smart, he won’t come back." He turned around to find his son on his knees, crying. "It’s alright, son. He won’t bother us again."

读后续写 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Wrinkles of confusion spread across Holly’s forehead as she unwrapped the gift from her best friend, Susan. "I...I thought you could use it for something." Susan’s explanation did nothing to help us understand why a twelve-by-eighteen-inch dark blue carpet remnant(零料,布头)was being presented as a birthday gift.
My heart went out to my daughter. Starting over at a new school had been a difficult adjustment. Until she met Susan, Holly had experienced little success making new friends.
The whispered "thanks" was barely audible(听得见的) as Holly tried not to allow her disappointment to show. She laid the carpet on the kitchen counter, and they headed outside to play. The extent of Holly’s disappointment didn’t become evident until the following evening when she came downstairs to say good night. "Well, I guess we know how much my best friend thinks of me, huh, Mom?" she said in tears. "I’m so sorry, honey" was all I could manage to say.
The next morning, I carried the kitchen rubbish outside. My heart sank as I lifted the lid of the trash can and saw Susan’s carpet lying there. Hesitating only for a moment, I took it out and brought it into the house.
"Susan invited me to come over to her house tomorrow,"Holly announced as she arrived home from school a week later. Although her voice carried a so-what attitude, I sensed she was pleased by the invitation. In spite of the number of times Susan had visited us, our invitations were never returned and it would be the first time for Holly to go.
The next day I drove Holly to the destination. A tall woman stood in the doorway to greet us. The house was shabby but neatly decorated with used furniture. From the chat with the woman we knew Susan had long been separated from her parents and that she was Susan’s stepmother. A warm light shone in her eyes as she revealed to me her fondness for Susan. I came to respect this generous-hearted woman who had opened her home to a young girl and attempted to make a difference in her life.

A boulder(巨石),as big as a house. That`s how the guidebook described Giant Rock. Dad said it arrived here millions of years ago. I was finally going to see it, in snowshoes, with my two older cousins, my dad, and my uncle Don. I`d been snowshoeing before, and I liked the adventure of hiking through deep snow.
At the parking area, after putting on our snowshoes, we studied the map. Due to the geographical location, electrical devices were inaccessible here. The map was our only guide. "We start here," Dad said," on the red trail(小路).Then we turn left onto the purple road. That`s where Giant Rock is." "Remember to stick together and don`t wander off, guys," Uncle Don said.
The trail ran uphill alongside a stone wall. It was easy to follow because red markers were nailed to the trees and the snow had been packed down by other hikers. At the top of the hill, we turned onto the purple trail. We settled into a pattern, with Dad and everyone else in front and me in the back, crunching (嘎吱嘎吱地踩) through the snow. I saw lots of animal tracks—mostly deer, squirrel, and rabbit prints. As the trail wound down, my cousin Andrew said what I’d been thinking: "Will we ever reach Giant Rock?" My cousin Aiden smiled and turned to me," Luke, do you think your dad invented this idea just to get us away from the TV for a while? "I laughed." You never know."
Finally, we climbed a hill and saw the massive boulder sitting alone in the forest. It really is as big as a house! My cousins and I high-fived each other and jogged until we stood at the base, breathless. Standing in the boulder’s broad shadow, I noticed the sun had sunk lower.
"Let’s head back, "Dad said after a few minutes." There will be several crossroads on the way back. Guys, keep up with the team. "Soon we were crunch-crunch-crunching our way home. I was a little behind the group when we approached a crossroads. And I noticed a set of animal tracks I hadn’t recognized before, so I followed them for a closer look.
