Fr centuries, peple have been lking fr a “funtain f yuth.” The idea is that if yu find a magical funtain, and drink frm its waters, yu will nt becme ld. Spanish explrer Juan Pnce de León searched fr waters with magical pwers in the early 1500s. But what he fund instead is the American State f Flrida.
Researchers in New Yrk did nt find a funtain f yuth in fact, but they may have fund a way t turn back the aging prcess. It appears the answer may be hidden right between yur eyes, in an area called the hypthalamus. The hypthalamus is part f yur brain. It cntrls imprtant activities within the bdy, including grwth, reprductin and the way we prcess fd.
Researchers at New Yrk’s Albert Einstein Cllege f Medicine fund that hypthalamus stem cells als influence hw fast aging takes place in the bdy. What are stem cells? They are simple cells that can develp int specialized cells, like bld r skin cells. Stem cells can als repair damaged parts in the bdy.
Prfessr Dngsheng Cai was the lead researcher in a study n aging in mice. Cai explains in the Jurnal Nature what they fund. “Aging speed can be cntrlled by a particular place in the bdy, which is the hypthalamus. And it can be cntrlled by a particular type f cells, which are hypthalamus stem cells. I think these findings are quite interesting.”
He adds that when the hypthalamus starts aging, s des the bdy. “S when hypthalamus functin is decreasing, particularly the lss f hypthalamus stem cells, this prtectin against the aging develpment is lst. It finally leads t aging.”
Using this infrmatin, the researchers began trying t activate (激活) the hypthalamus in mice. They did this by putting stem cells frm yunger mice int middle-aged animals. Later, the researchers examined mice and tested fr changes in behavir. They als lked fr changes in the strength f the animals’ muscles and the way they wrked. The researchers say the results shw that the treatment slwed aging in the animals.
Cai says when hypthalamus stem cells, which were derived frm yung mice was put int middle-aged mice, the mice aged slwly and they als have increased the length f their lives.
But these results were just frm studying mice in a lab. If the mice can live lnger, des that mean peple culd have lnger lives? The next step is t see if the anti-aging effects als wrk in human beings.
Juan Pnce de León’s stry was mentined in rder t shw ________.
A.the effrts he made t discver Flrida
B.the fruitless wrk t find the magical funtain
C.the nn-stp search fr the way t stay yung
    D.the impssible existence f “funtain f yuth”
    13. The hypthalamus has cntrl ver activities EXCEPT________.
    A. grwthB. reprductin
    C. aging prcessD. fd prductin
    14. What can we learn frm the passage?
    A. Stem cells are specialized cells which can repair damaged parts.
    B. Aging is the result f functin lss f hypthalamus stem cells.
    C. The strength f the animals’ muscles slws the prcess f aging.
    D. Aging speed is cntrlled by stem cells instead f hypthalamus.
    15. The underlined wrds “were derived frm” prbably means “________”.
    A. came frmB. changed frm
    C. resulted frmD. develped frm
