By the time she turned 18, Khadijah Williams had attended twelve schools. She had lived in shelters, in parks, and in motels, never in a permanent(长期的)residence fol more than a few months. She had been laughed at and looked down upon by students at a dozen schools who thought of her as “different".
Homeless since early childhood, Khadijah struggled all her life to hide her circumstances om teachers and fellow students. However, academic achievement proved to be a way for her to find confidence in herself again. For instance, at the age of 9, she placed in the 99tl ercentile on a state exam, and her teacher told her she was "gifted". From that mome forward, Khadijah decided to do whatever it took to keep herself in that category. “I was so proud of being smart. I often heard my fellow students say, 'You got the easy way out because you're homeless,," she told The LA Times."But I never saw it as an excuse about living a less successful life."
By the second year of high school, she realized that she could not succeed in getting the education she dreamed of without getting help to go beyond what her current school could offer. She talked to teachers and advisers who helped her apply for summer community college classes, scholarships, and enrichment programs. And in the 1lth grade, when she enrolled at Jefferson High School, she decided to complete the rest of her school career there-a decision that meant taking a bus each morning at 4 a. m. and not getting home until 1l p.m.
Here's the end of the story-when Khadijah poured the story of her life into her Harvard University college application, she was accepted.
24. What makes Khadijah confident in herself?

25. What do many students think of Khadijah's being homeless?
A. It's a really pitiful circumstance.
B. It makes her more strong-minded.

D. It's an excuse about working less hard.
26. What did Khadijah's teachers and advisers help her do?
A. Pass a college entrance exam.
B. Apply for more advanced education.
C. Make a decision to complete high school.
D. Become a top student in her current school.
27. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Twelve Schools Make a Successful Student
B. Being Different Means Having More Chances
C. Khadijah Williams: From Shelters to Harvard
D. Khadijah Williams: Inspiration to Homeless People

Danelien van Aalst at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and he colleagues have investigated how relative age affects popularity among 14 to 15-yearolds in the Netherlands, Sweden and England. They collected survey data from 13,251 students from the three countries.
Each teenager was asked to identify five of the most popular students in their class. The researchers then compared the popularity of each child to their age relative to that of their classmates. They discovered a connection, the older the student was, the more likel he or she was to be considered popular.
“A child enters school before or after a certain cut-off date and that determines how old or young you are relative to your year group," says Danelien van Aalst. "We found that if you're born right after the cut-off date, making you one of the oldest members of your class, you're going to be popular, "
They found that the same effect also applied at the year-group level. Here, it was the children who were the oldest relative to all of their fellows in the year group-rather than just those in their particular class-that were the most popular
All three countries showed almost the same pattern. However, at the year-group level, it was the most pronounced in England. At the classroom level, it was in the Netherlands that the pattern was the strongest. This is partly because the country has a system of grade retention(留级)-when students don't meet their academic requirements, their teachers will hold them back a year, which means they then are older than all the other classmates and often the most popular.
This relative age effect has been shown in other areas."Relative age has earlier been demonstrated to affect school performance-relatively older children do better in school," says Herman van Werfhorst at the University of Amsterdam, who wasn't involved in the study.Similarly, previous research has shown that older children tend to be better at sports than younger students in the same year group.
28. What were the students in the survey required to do?
A.Compare their classmates.
B. Name some popular students.
C. Identify their classmates’age.
D. Try to become popular in their class.
29. What does the underlined word "pronounced" mean in Paragraph 5?
A. Apparent. B.Complex. C. Exceptional. D. Unbelievable.
30. What happens to the students held back a year?
A. They miss most of their lessons.
B. They make great academic progress.
C. They become the oldest in their class.
D. They experience a drop in popularity.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph concerning relative age?
A. It's the focus of many other scientists.
B. It fails to show its effect outside schools.
C. Its effect shows in sports performance.
D. Its effect has been studied in various other fields.
D
Besides soil, all plants need water. This makes it hard to grow plants where it's dry But this problem may soon be solved by researchers. Their invention is a super-moisture absorbent gel(凝胶),or SMAG
“The gel-based material can be used as a soil enhancer, as well as alternative soil in greenhouses," said Guihua Yu, an engineer at the University of Texas-Austin. He led the team that developed the gel. He also said this material could be “directly mixed with soil or fertilizer at certain amounts"
The gel works similarly to how dew forms. Dew is those water droplets attached to leaves of grass in the morning. It forms because of differences in air temperature between day and night. Air contains different gases, including water vapor(蒸气). Warmer air holds more water vapor. As the air cools after dark, it loses its ability to hold some of it. When it reaches a certain temperature-known as the dew point-some water vapor will turn into tiny drops of water. When temperature rises the next day, that water evaporates, again turning into vapor.
The research team decided to use this process to aid plants. The gel mixed with soil absorbs the water vapor and holds it. The next day, the gel instead slowly releases(释放) that water into the soil.
Jeff Hattey, a soil scientist, says the gel sounds pretty helpful in farming, but you probably won't see the gel at the hardware store anytime soon. He notes that based on the quantities of the new material used in Yu's experiments, outdoor fields might require a whole lot of it. According to his research, farmers might have to add about 13 trucks of gel to the soil top per acre (英亩)
Yu believes future studies will help his team understand if the gel could be used for larger, outdoor fields. "Fortunately, the gel is not poisonous," Yu says. So it shouldn't hurt the bacteria or worms that are needed to keep soil healthy for growing things.
32. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The application of the gel. B. The raw material of the gel.
C. The characteristics of the gel. D. The research process of the gel.
33. Why is dew mentioned in the third paragraph?
A. To introduce its formation.
B. To explain the principle of the gel.
C. To stress the importance of water vapor.
D. To clarify the definition of the dew point.
高二英语试题第6页(共10页)
34. What problem with the gel does Jeff Hattey point out?
A. It is of little help in real farming.
B.It will be too expensive to buy.
C. It requires too much calculation to apply it to outdoor fields.
D. It must reach a huge amount to be effective in outdoor fields.
35. What can we learn about the gel?
A. It works only at night.
B. It can replace soil in dry areas.
C. It is friendly to the creatures in the soil.
D. It makes use of dew to offer plants water.

My knees started shaking, yet my body froze. It felt as though my soul left my body and I had no control over it. Anxiously, I looked through the announcement posted on the wall of the locker room, my heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends’ names on that list but could not find mine. I just couldn't accept that all my friends were on the team but I was not.
I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the coach. But the coach just said, “There is always next year." I could feel the hot, bitter tears building in my eyes, and I ran out of the room as fast as I could. As soon as I walked out, I saw my friends crowding into the locker room to look at the finalized team list. I heard them shouting and laughing as I slowly walked away, every one of them jumping around with excitement after seeing that they made the team. I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw all my friends gathered near the lot, celebrating and joking around. I detoured(绕行) around the side of the school to avoid them, trying not to think about being the only one in my friend group not to make the team.
I saw my father's familiar red Mazda pull up near the school lot, and I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me, turned on the radio, and started driving home. Then when we got home, he noticed my heavy steps and long face, and asked me what was wrong.
“Nothing.Well, it's just that all my friends made the school team. Everyone! Except me!”I said, not knowing how he would react.
“Well, what are you going to do about it? Are you just going to sit there and wait?" he asked.
