Step1: Leading – in.

At first the teacher asks the students: “What should you say to the people you don't know well?”

S1: Maybe I should say “Are you Li Lei's sister?”

S2: Maybe I should say “You are a teacher, aren't you?”

S32: …

T: OK. Let's look at the picture and check the questions you think are good for polite small talk with people you don't know well.

Step 2: Pair work.

1．First talk about these pictures in pairs.

2．Then make up a conversation using one of the questions from activity 1a in pairs. Before practicing, make a model with one student for others like this:

A: Do you like thrillers?

B: Yes, I do. / No, I don't. But I love comedies.

3．Finally act out their conversations for others.

Step3: Listening.

T: Here are three conversations. Let's listen and see where the people are in each conversation. Please listen twice

Are you ready?

Ss: Yes.

1．Play the recording for the students and let them listen twice and write down the place in the chart quickly.

2．Check the answers together. After that, teacher should say: “Very good. Next, let's listen to the tape again and match each question with the correct answer. Please listen twice.”

3．Finally, check their answers.

Step 4: Pair work.

1．T: Next let's play a small talk conversation in pairs.

Ss: Yes.

2．Then make a model with a student like this.

A: This is a great party, isn't?

B: Yes, it is. / No, it isn't.

3．First talk about it in groups of four.

4．Finally, act out their conversations for others.

Step 5: Reading.

T: It's time to read.

Ss: OK.

T: Read carefully the three notes, and write T or F.

(   ) 1．Sometimes it isn't easy being the new kid at school.

(   ) 2．Carlos said he wouldn't help Bill with my math project.

(   ) 3．John's cousin will go with him.

(   ) 4．The three notes are all thank- you notes.

Step 6: Writing.

1．First fill in the blanks in the Thank- you note in activity 3b.

2．Next write their own Thank- you notes like this.

3．Finally read their own Thank- you note for others.

Step7: Games.

T: It's time to relax. Do you like playing games?

Ss: Yes.

T: I think so. Let's play a game. Group1 write the place on a piece of paper. Group2 writes down the time on a piece of paper. Group3 writes down the persons on a piece of paper of paper. Let's see what will happen.

First get ready for it. And turn in their paper.

Finally ask three students, one is the place, another is the time, and the other one is the person. Student1 choose one of the places. Student2 choose one of the times. Student3 choose the person. At last, ask the fourth student read what will happen.
